Fabulous game. Which version do you play?

It's such a long time since I've played (because I don't know anyone else who does) that I've forgotten which version!

My grandparents taught me and used to have a special table cover with places for the melds etc. My grandfather had been in the Merchant Navy and was a real card sharp. They must have played the 'Scouse' version since they were from Liverpool.

I remember later playing with friends and having arguments about wild cards and how much was needed to *cough* go down ().

I'd love to play again - waste a whole evening!

Sky have just announced MLT was at ST Mary's today. Obviously something to do with the takeover. Hopefully tying a few things up rather than trying to save it!!!!

Trying out Rupert's comfy office chair perhaps?

The original Uruguayan rules for me. Prefer singles to pairs though. Gets a bit tense when the discard pile gets big though. My biggest hand = 3750.

Do all versions have the option to declare 'Acaba'? Or is my memory playing tricks (again)?

I don't think it is in any official rule book - its just some European addition. If have never played a game that includes it, which is probably a good thing because I can see it causing some angst :-)

Yes, we always end up having "discussions" on those points!

Always alled em clean - Was an Army brat so spent lots of time in Germany as a kid wher my Gran taught be the game - teh Naturals in German are called 'sauber' which is clean in English see... ;-)

The discard pile was huge, it was pretty tense and had to tempt the wise old gran by by keeping three 4's in my hand and discarding one - it worked.... kind of felt a bit bad, as my gran used to like a wee glass of something so if you kept her glass topped up, she tended to make more mistakes - seriously the only chance of winning! ;-)

LOL - I once had two days of silence with the missus on a holiday. She picked up a huge discard and allowed me to play my hand while she sorted through it gleefully. I went "out" straight away and left her with the lot :D

This is much more interesting that updates from TL.

I remember my grandparents would invite us round for 'supper' and a game of canasta on a Sunday evening (pre kids) and supper was a 3 course meal! My gran was a superb cook.

My husband and I used to partner against them and they'd always end up having a row over strategy and moves. The ensuing silence often lasted until the next Sunday when the whole process would start all over again.

I learnt to count and multiply when I was only 4 by playing crib with my grandfather :)

I have it on good authority that the reason for no announcemnet yet is that at this moment teh Mr X., Lynam, MLT and Fry are actually playing pairs with the first to 15,000,000 - its MLTs turn, has all six jokers but no third card - bead of sweat dripping as he' sitting on a pretty big minus score if it all goes tits up? ;-)

As much as I like Canasta, crib is my favourite game.
