Seems a bit strange, day before we play Ajax.

What do you mean "probably" a reserve team? The clue is in the name = Southampton XI which always means a mixture of fringe players and youth

Southampton XI will include 1st year scholars aswell, such as Jack Dovey as he has said to me (he's a good mate of mine) that he will be playing in pre - season against teams like AFC Totton so he may be included to play against Newport.

Trying to offer Islanders a reason to support us. Might gain new young fans. We havent got much to offer versus premier league clubs. In the eyes of an eight year old.

That's the point.

It's a shame they couldn't include a few first team squad. Portsmouth played Newport in pre-season last year, took the game seriously, had a good crowd and won the 'hearts and minds' of quite a few local kids. Btw, they won 7-0 and Cranie got on the scoresheet!

Saints XI just means the whole squad is involved. You get first teamers, reserves and then youth.

 

I think last season nearly all our friendlies where Saints XI.

im not in the woodwork at all but dont tell me you aint noticed walking around newport or ryde there is a lack off saints shirts about. look at the red jet on match days and see how many of the faces you used to see but dont now.

Saints have promised AFC Totton that they will be playing a strong team against them. It will not be just a Southampton XI.

The manager will use the 2 games in 24 hours as a carrot & stick idea

very simple you play/ train well in the week before you get Ajax squad no. you dont impress you play newport sure whats what big teams do when they have massive game & an unglamourus match
