Arizona Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 Off there on business next week and it looks like I'm going to have one day off. Can anyone recommend something decent to do or where the best beach is?

Mole Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 Avoid the suburbs. I've been reading about Marseille and let's just say it has chronic social problems.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 Lovely place when i went there in 98 World Cup, although the tear gas and mini riot on the beach after Scholes scored spoiled things a bit.
saint lard Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 Go to Bordeaux. Agreed,Marseille is full of Algerians. Mistral winds may mess your hair up also. Google it up if you don't know what i'm on about.

Robsk II Posted 12 June, 2009 Share Posted 12 June, 2009 I have flown to Stansted from Nimes, and can confrim that Nimes is 'OK'. I very nearly ended up sleeping under a bush with 30Kg of stuff and a canoe paddle. Thankfully, I had some life-affirming experience with some french version chavs who were overly helpful and nice and took me to a hotel that was near to the airport. Lovely place? Marseille was a battlezone, it's a scummy place. You would probably compare it to Cardiff, nice waterfront but full of scumbags who hate the English. Avoid. Ever since Britain sunk the French fleet at Mers-el-Kebir in 1940 there has been resentment over and above the usual rivalry. Marseille is a hot bed for the French NF to this day. I have always found the people in the South of France to like the English, but then, 1940? They were on our side?

ART Posted 15 June, 2009 Share Posted 15 June, 2009 People in the south of France like the English? They prefer Germans and that's saying something. Being a Scot I've got by but there's no love lost for the English. Don't know about beaches but the whole port area is a fantastic place to hang out in Marseille with great restaurants and bars and I do believe there are areas where you can dive in for a swim. As someone said, keep out of the suburbs and don't get into a state where you don't have full control of yourself. Watch the subway system for pickpockets or muggers. I myself have always enjoyed trips to Marseille and well worth a visit.

I have always found the people in the South of France to like the English, but then, 1940? They were on our side? It's debateable whether Vichy France was on our side. Many in power were only in power because of the Germans so to trust the French to scuttle the fleet wasn't assured. Churchill had the assurance of the French fleets admiral, but the assurance of one man versus the risk of a French/Italian/German navy (which would have been bigger than our navy - the worlds largets at the time) was not something we could gamble on. It transpired that the French fleet was scuttled as the German army marched into Marseille to seize it so Admiral Dalamans oath was honoured. Mainly because when they visit the area they bring all their food with them, whereas the English buy from the locals.
chrisobee Posted 15 June, 2009 Share Posted 15 June, 2009 Avoid the suburbs. I've been reading about Marseille and let's just say it has chronic social problems. Saints played there in 1976/77 in the Cup Winners Cup. I remember there was a lot of trouble after the game with the Saints fans coaches being chased for miles by hooligans on motorbikes, scooters etc; Just reading "Saints A Complete Record of SFC 1885-1987" it seems the game was as bad: After Saints had equalised to make it 1-1 ( we'd won the 1st leg 4-0, one of the best performances I have ever witnessed) "the Frenchmen lost their composure and kicked almost everything in sight. It was one of the most appalling spectacles ever witnessed in a game involving Southampton. " So good luck to you I say !
