Toadhall Saint Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 I could be wrong but don't Brighton and Millwall have a bit of rivalry? I remember some far left activist running to the press a few years back when there was trouble at The New Den. He complained the Brighton fans were chanting "Sieg Heil". Only later did he discover they were in fact chanting "seagulls". LOL! But I can remember when at the old Den they made George Lawrence's warm up a bit eventful.
adethorne Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 Brighton I guess but we're limited on fan numbers so it has to be Swindon for me, plus I live near there.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 PS If anyone wants to work it out in Googlemaps... ooohTerryHurlock Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 They are former Premier League opponents. John Gorman made his name there, which should be enough for anyone. They have a stupid roundabout outside the ground. They let Claus score against them pre-season, ruining the edge of his first competitive goal. More personally: I broke down there once. Their McDonalds is absolutely filthy (well it was in 1999, and they were showing no signs of considering cleaning it by now). The Claus goal (above) occurred before I got into the match. I actually quite liked Brighton last time I went there;);). Always thought you were a NICE BOY!
sandwichsaint Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 Shirley it's Brighton v Palace? Unfortunately relegation hasn't moved my home trip from a rather inconvinient 151 miles (2hrs 51 mins) as measured on google maps. We do seem to be playing in Div 3 South though ... I'll be hoping for midweek aways at any of: Gillingham (!), Brighton, Orient, Charlton, Brentford, Southend, Colchester, MK or as far as Walsall. Agree that the 'derby' is probably Brighton but tickets will obviously be a problem. If you want somebody with a bit of size and a bit of previous I'm surprised nobody has suggested Charlton?

The away end at Brighton holds about 900. Better day out in Brighton than Brentford.
Neil Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 I think Brighton are too friendly with us (no gags) since that Dell finale game, apart from the odd rumble back in the day, '86 was fun. Swindon could be a bit tasty, as we can take a lot more up there than we can to Brighton.
paulwantsapint Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 Which away match will offer the best weekend on the beer? Good B&B Safe car parking Good pubs/ clubs Welcoming local fans?
mack rill Posted 9 June, 2009 Posted 9 June, 2009 There is only one true southern Derby my pony fiddling foe, Sloppy seconds will never make up for it :smt065

The9 Posted 10 June, 2009 Author Posted 10 June, 2009 How much time on your hands? Nicked it from a Brentford forum after Googling something like "league one mileages", took me all of 30 seconds and then another couple of minutes to do Swindon, Brighton, Brentford and Bristol Rovers distances.
The9 Posted 10 June, 2009 Author Posted 10 June, 2009 Always thought you were a NICE BOY! Loads of decent bars and fit women in Brighton to my recollection. Some good music venues too. I'd say I'm more affable than nice though. I also don't have attitudes from the 1950s... Swindon, however, is a concrete shot-hile with a rubbish Outlet Mall and some filthy streets.

scott_saints Posted 10 June, 2009 Posted 10 June, 2009 There is only one true southern Derby my pony fiddling foe, Sloppy seconds will never make up for it :smt065 Nahhh. We don't care about you anymore.
bristolsaint29 Posted 10 June, 2009 Posted 10 June, 2009 You would usually be able to go to any of them with little problem as long as you don't go looking for trouble. Millwall and Leyton Orient are not particularly pleasant though. As for 2h 22 to get to Bristol Rovers, I've done the A34/M4 AND M27/A36 routes hundreds of times going to South Wales, and either way will get you to Bristol in under 2 hours. M4 is quicker, especially as the Memorial Ground is near the M32 into Bristol from the M4. I have done it on 1hr 27 minutes from Bristol to St Mary's......mind you I wasn't hanging about.

I think we have gone back to the 50's with our football.... back to div 3 south or whatever it was!..... Have swindon fixed there ground yet? One side was condemned when I last went there?
The9 Posted 10 June, 2009 Author Posted 10 June, 2009 I have done it on 1hr 27 minutes from Bristol to St Mary's......mind you I wasn't hanging about. I once drove from Southampton to Newport in 1hr 35 minutes in a Vauxhall Nova 1.1. It was pre-(most) speed cameras but post Twyford Down and Newbury by-pass, about 3am and I was on my third engine in the car, unsurprisingly. About 1995/6-ish I suspect. Obviously at no point did I exceed the speed limit.

SFC Forever Posted 10 June, 2009 Posted 10 June, 2009 Dont understand why distance is the overriding fact. Especially when the difference between Swindon and Brighton is so small. Brighton is a coastal town like us. It just feels like there is more similarities/rivalries. As in with the blue scum. What do we have to argue over with Swindon ?? Brighton also has some really good shops hiding between the coast and the high street. I also feel Brighton will be a harder game because they will treat it more like a derby.
