spyinthesky Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 Will the problems at Setanta cause financial problems within the English game or will their rights be snapped up by competitors at around the same price? Presume any financial fall out will hit the FA and Premiership but will there be any likely repurcussions for teams in League 1? I also heard that Setanta owe the Scottish League £3m (a relatively small sum) and this may cause 4 Scottish clubs to go into administration. If so it shows the fragility of Scottish clubs. INFLUENCED.COM Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 With a 26m payment due soon I would think it will affect the English Game, how that money was to be apportioned to the leagues I don't know but would assume most of it goes where most of it always goes, where we used to be. I thought I read the SFA will make the payment, however, I agree with your last point a Scottish Premiership club going pop over 250k should be a worry. bungle Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 Sky will snap up all the leftovers. There's a rumour that ESPN might be interested in some of it. Remember that there have to be 2 broadcasters now for Premier League games.
Dicko Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 I'd be worried for some Blue Sq Premier sides Setanta have covered this league extensively, I bet some clubs will be sweating on future revenues

stevegrant Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 "Experts" seem to be predicting that the value of the packages currently owned by Setanta would re-sell for a fraction of the initial bid. They've now stopped accepting new subscribers, which appears to be under a similar sort of non-cover-up as Saints' "we're not selling season tickets because we don't know what division we'll be in yet" claim a few months back... http://tinyurl.com/kk9bw6
Saint Keith Posted 9 June, 2009 Share Posted 9 June, 2009 (edited) id be astonished if Deloittes were not in before the end of the week and going into admin give the rights holders the right to terminate all agreements immediately, and resell them if they want to. whether they would or not is another question though the tricky one if the premier league rights. sky would want them but are not allowed to have them, so another organisation could pick them up for a song alternative is they keep the rights with setanta, and whatever structure comes out of admin, and hope they get more that way, by keeping them afloat ( re that last sentance, maybe barclays could have done the same ) fortunatley, we are not affected.... oh Edited 9 June, 2009 by Saint Keith

The SPL and Blue Square Premier don't have the same clauses, so their clubs could be well and truly screwed.

St Chalet Posted 10 June, 2009 Share Posted 10 June, 2009 I think that football will eat itself. It is only being propped up by broadcasting fees (which will drop because they don't provide ROI) and rich owners, how long they will all remain is also open to question. Poop&Scoop Posted 10 June, 2009 Share Posted 10 June, 2009 Even if allowed, why would Sky want to spend money on the extra football games? I would think that most people with Setanta would already have Sky Sports, so not like Sky would get much extra money signing up new customers.
