Golden Balls Posted 5 June, 2009 Share Posted 5 June, 2009 (Sorry mods if this shouldn't be on the main board, feel free to move) On 6th July I am travelling to Kenya to do some volunteering. I shall be doing some building work and quite a bit of football coaching. I am planning to take over an extra suitcase which will be full of equipment for the young Kenyans. If anyone has any old equipment they would like to donate, please get in touch. Things I am looking to take are; Bibs, water bottles, kit bags, footballs, cones, football shirts and shorts etc. Of course I would much prefer it to be stuff with a nice big Saints badge on but obviously will accept anything. So if you do have any old saints shirts lying around and fancy freeing up the space, please PM me or reply and it will be much appreciated. I happy to come and collect these items if its in the Southampton area. Many thanks (p.s. if anyone was looking to do the same sort of thing, I've come accross a goldmine of a company www.kenyanadventure.com its about half the price of everywhere else I can find)

Colinjb Posted 5 June, 2009 Share Posted 5 June, 2009 I believe I still have a load of old (but perfectly clean and usable) water bottles and a carrying frame for them from the u15 team I coach. Not sure how to get them to you as I am in Cov, but assuming they can be got to you they are yours.
Michelle Posted 5 June, 2009 Share Posted 5 June, 2009 Colin, my hubby's HO is in Derby, so he's up your way-ish pretty much every week. If GB wants the stuff I'm sure hubby won't mind me volunteering him to collect it!

I'll see what other random team bits I have that may be relevant.

1976_Child Posted 23 June, 2009 Share Posted 23 June, 2009 I speak mediocre kiswahili if you need an online translator while you are there but then in Kenya you are never too far from someone who speaks passable English. How well do you know Kenya? Nairobi in the 90s was awful - I hated it. Give me good old Dar es Salaam everyday of the week. Dar is still much poorer than Nairobi but I always felt it was much more honest (and i don't mean thieving etc. Just more at ease with itself). Which actually is a fairly accurate discription of Kenya/TZ in the round. Except for the remnants of 'happy valley' Nairobi was not my favourite. (the 'Klingon-Colonials' as we called them were an arrogant bunch but actually good fun and very hospitable. And boy, they knew how to drink!) I spent most of my time in Kenya in the semi-deserts surrounding Lodwar right up near the Sudanese border. Bleak as the moon and a whole world away from the 'lions and elephant' savannah image naturally associated with Kenya. Where ever you go I truly wish you luck! East Africa is an outstandingly marvelous place and I am very jealous of you! Good luck.
Golden Balls Posted 24 June, 2009 Author Share Posted 24 June, 2009 Thatnks 76 child. Sounds great. Im staying in a town about an hour outside of Nairobi. (I forget the name of it) its quite a poor area but from what I've heard from people who have been there, the people are fantastic! Sorry I havent been replying to people much. Im in the process of moving and cant get online often. I shall be doing the rounds very soon to pick up donations. If anyone else has anything they want to get rid of, please pm me your address and I will be in touch for when I can pick it up. Many thanks

I just gave him the money. From the way he told me I assumed the flights came with it but seems not. The flights he got us were about £300 return. I would highly recommend this trip. Was amazing some of the stuff I saw and did. And a big thank you to everyone who donated. The people loved the Saints shirts I had as well as everything else of course! Played football with a local team while out there. My god they can run!!!
these things take time Posted 25 July, 2009 Share Posted 25 July, 2009 I'm really interested in doing something similar, most likely next summer. I have a few questions... What was the homestay like? What do the people taking you in get out of it? Did you take part in other activities as well as football coaching? Did you feel you made a difference? Is it expensive in Kenya? Thanks. Golden Balls Posted 26 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 26 July, 2009 I'm really interested in doing something similar, most likely next summer. I have a few questions... What was the homestay like? What do the people taking you in get out of it? Did you take part in other activities as well as football coaching? Did you feel you made a difference? Is it expensive in Kenya? Thanks. The homestay was great. It had everything you need. (flushing toilets, shower, beds, tv and even internet) Over here the house would be considered a bit crap despite the size. However its a palace compared to the majority of Kenya. I'm not 100% sure the exact amount the people taking you in get. They do make profit I imagine as its their job however they have done charity work all their lives and set up schools etc. They are always looking to help out people around them. I know the money you pay to go out there, a large chunk is invested into the projects, hence why I went with that company. Yes as well as taking football training you can take part in matches etc. You always take part in the projects you're doing (teaching, conservation etc) but I believe you can pay extra and they sort out things like Safari, climbing Mount Kenya, learning Swahili etc. Thats what I did and well worth it. It really does feel like you make a difference. Especially in the schools!! I always felt the children listened more just because I was white. Sounds silly but they just assume white people are highly educated. Kenya is the cheapest place I have ever been! You can get a really nice 3 course meal for about £2! They economy is crippled even compared to ours. Mainly because of their government. I came back with a lot of change!!!
these things take time Posted 5 August, 2009 Share Posted 5 August, 2009 Thanks for the response. Sounds really good, and hopefully something I will be able to do next summer if I am able to save enough money.
