Nervous....?

Guided Missile

Recommended Posts

It made the amount that Pinnacle have to fork out to the administrators and creditors much less, and leaves the new manager with more funds to build his own squad ?

I personally am quite happy to see a spring-clean of the cobwebs of failure. Surman was apparently awful at times last season, and McG is a lazy arse.

although I agree about clean sweep etc and would welcome a manager building his team, if we did hang onto DMG he could well be the best forward in that league. He had a pretty good season - it wasn't his fault Lowe/JP/Wotte used him instead of Saga/Rasiak/John.

Watford away he was both the most skilled player on the pitch and the hardest working.

He did disappear some games, but scored quality goals.

Its a lot to expect from player in first full season when played half up front on his own and some in midfield.

He would be a loss.

I don't think it is any more sinister than the fact that we've been bought by someone who seems to value the property he is purchasing more than the club, who works through a property consultancy and who doesn't plan to invest millions to keep and expand the quality within our squad.

But we're in business and given where we were a few days ago that looks pretty appealing.

I'd suggest we all get used to being run on the organic finances that a League 1 team can generate which will mean cashing in on our saleable assets when we can.

That will probably mean selling before we can buy.

Anyone buying will need to get us to the CCC and possibly the Prem before seeing any real return on their investment and so I would expect them to be prepared to stump up some cash for purchases / staff etc to do just that. They will need to speculate to accumulate.

The letter from Lynham says just that and that the individual is prepared to do so.

I'm not sure where your negative slant comes from other than conjecture as to the reason behind these two want-aways. The other explanations, ie career progression and fulfilment seem much more plausible.

We are about to be owned by a man as rich as Mandaric and will have no creditors and a director in Matt LeTiss worth far more than 10 points next season. What player would want to leave a set up that is planning to return the club to the Premiership within 5 years....?

Geography for McGoldrick - has been on the grapevine for a while (18 months at least) that he wished to return to Nottingham

Profile for Surman - has tasted England U21 duty although his form since has been largely dreadful. Staying in League 1 would make him a better player and grow up physically IMO.

Dyer - escaping the scene of the crime.

No who would, but they have to acknowledge they are partly the reason we are there.

I agree and in the case of Lallana would argue that he would benefit from sometime playing at a lower level as would McGoldrick who at times was to nonchalant and ****y for his own good. Surman may be our biggest asset but for whatever reason that status has not been reflected in his performances last season or for some of the season before.

He does show flashes of his brilliance and I don't think he reacted as well to Pearson's style of management as maybe other players and he looked like an unhappy fish out of water at LB under Pearson despite his comments at the time he would play anywhere to support the cause. I don't think Pearson rated him in the role Surman plays and thought he had better options and I think it was rumoured at the time Surman was unhappy at the new training regime and the earlier starts.

There are people on here with close ties to Surman and I would be interested in their thoughts but to me since the last dozen games of the season before last he has looked like a player drained of motivation and Gillett IMO was a more important influence on the team. I sincerely hope it works out for Surman but his sale to me wouldn't smack of asset stripping more common sense for all concerned as he looks like a player in badly need of a change of scenery.

Firstly anyone who thinks the new owner is going to throw stacks of cash at the club is clearly deluded. The club, as it always has been, will have to be a self-funding entity to survive. The 'hundreds of millions' of pound statement from Pinacle is clearly PR and I'm this figure has no doubt been arrived at by some exageration of what assets the person holds. This does not meant they will be bankrolling us.

If the new owners can clear the debts then that's fine with me, I don't care if they provide 1p of investment. If we need to sell before we buy this Summer then so be it. With the crowds we can generate we can still be one of the big boys at this level even if the new owner is expecting the club to totally support itself.

So I would imagine that Fry has asked Pinnancle if it is ok to sell McG and Surman and Pinnacle have said yes, provided we get this amount for them. Let's face it McG has played his last game for us. He wants out and wants to move back to the midlands to be near his family. As for Surman, he is far too good for L1 so is going to go.

I also expect Schnierderlein and Lallanna to be sold as well this Summer.

....because I am. This is why. According to the Echo, deals for the sale of two of our most valuable assets, Surman and McGoldrick, could be decided today.

Now, the only way that this could happen, IMHO, is for the Pinnacle consortium to agree to the sale, as they hold an exclusive position with regard to the purchase of assets from SLH, ie, no other party can agree to buy these players without their agreement.

So....I would have hoped that before this happens, a discussion, however brief, would be held with our existing manager or our new manager on whether he wants to keep the two best young players in our squad.

I really want the shy multi-multi-millionaire to complete the deal, but I would have rather that these player sales were agreed after the new management structure was in place and the players were back at training.

Still, that's just me, nervous post-Wilde and pre-asset stripper. I look forward to the well-informed posters to explain the timing of these transfers....

Did you read the article or just base your scaremongering thread on the headline?

According to the Echo online (http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/4416925.Saints_to_discuss_bids_for_key_players/ ) the discussion about players is between Wotte and Pinnacle so no need to be nervous.

In fact if you read the article it doesn't even say that a decisions being made today!

I agree Nick but only if the McGoldrick of the second half of last season turns up and not the one in the first half who at times was very prone to walking back to an on-side poistion with his hands on his hips like a petulant Ronaldo. Also, I don't want him to take another penalty until he has learned that trying to be cute costs us points and makes him look ridiculous.

my first wish is for a new unified owner - we appear to have that

we have new figure head to unite behind in MLT

they say they are clearing debts - if this is the case it will always be easier for the club to afford players etc - of course we don't know details/structure of this

they have already talked about inputting cash for team affairs - this will be new.

I don't think we are expecting Man City levels but until we hear more others guesses are no more deluded than yours.

I think they have already said they have accessed and agreed investment for 5 yr plan to premiership

I may point out that the players will pretty much decide whether they want to stay, not the club.

Do you really expect DMG, Surman, Lallana etc to want to play in league 1??

Why not - it was good enough for Matt Oakley, he put his head down, worked hard and has (thankfully) reaped the rewards. Shows what hard work can achieve if you are willing to put you 'star status' on hold.

If the investor doesn't spend at least 5 of his millions in investment and we rely on player sales to generate cash to buy more aged journeymen and loans and mix them with the residual assets we have in the academy do you think we will be one on the big boys at this level?

I'm no expert on crowd stats for L1 games but my guess is we will be below Leeds, Norwich and Charlton in the pecking order without our fickle fans being given some on the pitch incentive. MLT will unsure a big crowd for the first fixture and maybe a few after that but if we settle down with a mediocre team with a lack of investment we can be sure history will repeat itself and we will be left with a medicre crowd by our standards albeit a decent crowd for L1.

Hardly reaching for the stars and I'll be amazed if funds are not set aside for investment - how much is a different matter and it could be Surman and McG are being sold as they are not considered good enough? Ok That's a romantic notion and getting carried away with just how wealthy our new man may be.

I think that Drew's problem is his lack of upper body strength and I've been saying it for 2 or 3 years. He hasn't got the pace to play wide left so he needs to beef up to be able to compete in the centre. I don't think Drew has ever been at peak fitness either but does have a lot of quality on the ball and a good pop on him if someone can work on the physiological side. If Lallana didn't go, I'm not sure we'd need him and Surman.

McGoldrick will go to Notts IMO, there's been speculation for at least 18 months that he wanted to return to Nottingham for family reasons.

Matt Oakley is from a different era of player I'm afraid and is also bright enough not to be dominated by some wide-boy spiv of an agent who should be mis-selling securitisation packages in the City instead.

Negative slant? Yes I suppose that's fair and I guess that does come from conjecture on my part but on the ultimate motives of the new buyer not the motives of the two "want-aways".

But conjecture can only happen in the absence of fact. Until I know where this is heading I can only speculate and there are things that concern me.

I took away from Tony Lynam's message that he wanted the club to stand on its own two feet - hence my comment about being run on the finances of a League 1 club. And by the way I think that is exactly what is needed right now and am completely behind that approach.

I also saw that Lynam said he'd go ask for money if he/MLT think it is needed so that is all good but then we see players leave/leaving and so I can only speculate (as GM is doing in this thread) as to the reason for this. Probably the players not wanting to stay as you say. Maybe there is no basis in fact? I just don't know.

I really am more than happy to be persuaded that our future is rosy but right now I feel a little concerned. But if all that transpires is that we are a united fan-base with a well run, well managed club with little investment, I'll be more than happy.

By the way, and again you might want to ignore this as conjecture but in the absence of fact, etc... but you say that we will need to be promoted before the owner will see any real return. Some would say that acquiring the substantial assets of the club for a knock-down fee might be all the return the new owner was looking for.

Personally, right now I can't reconcile that the mouth-piece of the new owner is a property consultant.

Will buy a copy on my way home.

But seeing as you've had the benefit of reading a paper copy and the online version can you confirm that:

- The paper copy says a decision on DMG and AS could be made today without Pinnacle talking to Wotte

and that the online version says:

- Pinnacle are meeting Wotte today to discuss, amongst other things, DMG and AS (and other players) but it doesn't say anthing about decisions being made today or by any set deadline.

I too have pondered this one for a while. I can only think that he was a friend (associate) or friend of a friend e.g. MLT

TL statement does say he was approached by the main man and then had a coffee with MLT but who introduced who? Personally I think the friend of a friend of a friend could be Micky Channon.

Happy to wait and see but like saintbletch I just can't reconcile it, never have done either way good on TL and MLT

I've always felt he looks more at home on the left and if used cleverly would be a major asset again.

Maybe not your typical pacey winger but there are other ways to hurt the opposition from those areas without having to get to the byline every time, just ask Beckham.

Very pertinent post IMO and on balance I think it's best we all remain hopeful but cautious about our immediate prospects for the season ahead at least. I'm not sure I understand the need for the investor to continue to protect their privacy and would hope they are bubbling over with excitement at the thought of owning our club and keen to make the usual announcements. Yes I'm nervous about the outcome too; that if the players are sold it could signal the prospective new owner's approach. The one fact that sticks in my mind from the Lyneham statement is that his client has several millions which he is willing to invest to get back to the Premiereship. He can start today by retaining these two players. My expectations have been raised and I'm nervous that they'll be dashed yet again.

I agree that pace isn't always the biggest asset for a winger (sure helps thoough) but Surman does not have the delivery of a Beckham either. It wasn't until the end of the season when Gillet took over corner kicks from Surman and Skacel that we looked close to scoring from a corner . In fact Surman's corners were so poor I was actually starting to feel embarrassed for him whereas Skacel was just lazy and useless.

Any players (assets) sold before pinnacle put pen to paper would no doubt affect the buying price of the club so you would have to assume that any sales would only be those agreed with pinnacle. This means either they dont have a vast amount of dosh to throw at the team or they feel they can buy better players than those being sold which we all pray is the case. Only time will tell!

but they were owned outright by Mandaric, didn't have 10 point deduction and if they had debts/creditors could pay them!

Surman wants to go as he's had enough of the instability at the club for the last two years - and needs to develop/progress as a footballer - that's not going to happen in League 1

this season he's taken a step back and now needs to take two forwards to get back to where he should be as an ex England U21

Kris Commons gave Forest an extra season in the lower league so Surman could do the same. He won't though, I realise that.

I didn't see that at all. Yes his form has been up and down. Let me reitterate that he HAS played in quite a few games this season, but when he has played badly it certainly hasn't been down to a lack of effort on match day.

When the deal is done I am hoping we get a manager who knows the division we are in and the CCC. This season i am hoping for a good run with possibly a go at the playoffs. To do that we need a good start to clear the -10 points quickly so that we can begin climbing the table.

We all seem in agreement that we need a few new players to supplement those we already have. As it seems likely we will be selling a few that means we need to move pretty soon. It will do us no good to see this deal drag on and on as that will limit our options as to who is available.

I would expect MLT has already spoken to the Pinnacle consortium about this most salient topic being an experienced pro. With the price apparently agreed it should hopefully mean we are near to knowing exactly who is running the club very soon.

I hope we get a nice surprise.

On the minus side, we don't have a squad that is remotely ready for CC1, with a lot of gaps to fill, and maybe more gaps to come. On the plus side, if the new owner is able to fund a rebuild, the 10 points deduction is not that important. The top four teams in League 1 last season would still have made the playoffs even with a 10 point deduction, so if we are competing at that level, promotion is a realistic prospect - BUT - it does depend on the funds to bring in some genuine quality.

I don't know how many games you watched last season or where.

Surman, like a few of our players last season was played out of position for a large part of the season. Mills was nearly destroyed by the dutch as he was terrified of playing by the time Surman was put in his place. James was strong enough to fight his way into a half decent RB by the end of the season. Playing for Scunny has done him the world of good as he had cover from his experienced defence and midfield. something neither back had with us.

Gillett is the player that we missed most when injured. Pulis we have never seen so he could be treated as a new signing if any good. Getting on Surman,Lallana and DMG's case in the circumstances I feel a little unfair.

Sincerely and absolutely not and I don't think I implied that in my post at all. I admire Surman but feel that he has looked a shadow of the player he was and by a lack of motivation I mean he seemed uninspired, laboured and tired and agree that as a young player he has probably had to much heaped on him too soon. Same with Lallana.

His dead ball delivery from corners or free kicks has been nothing short of awful and only the freekick against Blackpool can I recall him making a decent effort. His corners never hit the target area and rarely beat the first man. Things are not right with him for whatever reason IMO and hopefully he just needs a change of scenery and we can all benefit from his move.

As I understand it the fans want transparency well you wont get that doing nodding dog impressions. It's right and fair IMO to ask questions when many answers remain unknown. MY motivation Alpine is to understand their motivation and reassure myself as a supporter this is going to be as good as the blind faithful are merely hoping it will be at this stage. I can't speak for GM.

As if we have the slightest bit of f**king choice of liking it or not. Its this or the club dying, so we should just embrace this buyout and keep our fingers crossed its for the best.

This is not the spring/summer of 2006 all over again. THERE IS NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. So maybe the likes of you and Johnny should shut the f**k up and hope it turns out for the best.

Or am I mistaken and you and Johnny were on the verge of making your own bid ???

Given the number of user names our resident Charlton, Villa, Leeds, Aldershot, Basingstoke, Salisbury, Andover, Forest fan has had, he could form his own consortium.

As the pinnacle lot are the potential buyers they would have a say in their sale or not, otherwise it would belike buying a pair of shoes and then the cashier taking the nice shiny buckles off when you get to the till.

If the sales go through then pinnacle must have a plan to replace them after being in contact with the new manager.

Yep. I am completely sanguine about this.

The new board and owner will be painfully aware that as the deal goes through, they have to make an immediate positive impact to get people to part with their season ticket money.

Let them do their job...

You would have thought so, as any sale would impact on what they were going to buy, player "assets", cash levels etc etc etc.

I'm sure Fry has to run it with one eye on the potential of Pinnacle not delivering, but I would like to think that he was also running it in close conjunction with the Pinnacle lot over the next couple of weeks.

You are assuming the Pinnacle lot are competent. We have had nothing to support or (thankfully!) deny that assertion. I would like to think they have plans, but I am not assuming they do. Selling our best players is not the direction I want the club to go in.

You would be absolutely destroying Lowe if he were selling our best players without a manager in place. Double standards in the extreme.

I expect that our new owner and our new manager will have their eye on who they want to bring in.

Pinnacle were not the only bidders but assuming they were the only acceptable bid we had no choice in the matter as a result of idiots like you championing the cause for Administration. Forgive me if in the cold light of day I don't now choose to follow your failed logic and those who supported your view.

In summary your stance was/is:

Administration is the only way forward so we can celebrate having no choice in the matter?
