Pancake Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 That a FL club has asked about Dowie's situation at Newcastle. Interesting I thought.
Scummer Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 MLT would know Dowie well. I knew him for a while when he played for us (went out with his sister in law), he's a decent bloke and I'd love to see him here. He'd be one of the more realistic targets.
Capel Saint Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Hope it isn't us. He's done nothing at the last three clubs he's managed.
EBS1980 Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Hope it isn't us. He's done nothing at the last three clubs he's managed. Did ok at QPR, think they were 8th before they sacked him, hardly a bad job.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Hope it isn't us. He's done nothing at the last three clubs he's managed. Could do a lot worse imo - he's a top bloke, intelligent and most important has an excellent relationship with our soon to be Chairman/DoF.
eelpie Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Hope it isn't us. He's done nothing at the last three clubs he's managed. Promoted Crystal Palace after taking over them when in a near relegation position? Nothing?
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I would welcome him. MLT " Ian, i'm thinking about bringing in some new faces " Dowie " Great, can I have one "
warsash saint Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Promoted Crystal Palace after taking over them when in a near relegation position? Nothing? He did the same with Oldham so certainly knows the league we are in
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I think he would be an excellent choice. He is very innovative with lots of ideas (was one of the first to have those American football style Microphones) and is intelligent - didn't he have a degree in engineering.
Evil Monkey Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I'd be pretty uninspired by Dowie TBH. I'm not expecting a bigger name than him...I just think there are better managers out there. Also, I cant decide whether an incoming manager having a strong relationship with the chairman is such a good thing. Could friendship cloud a chairman's judgement over cerain things?
Gingeletiss Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 He's a strange one. He's shown ability in all his jobs, did fine at Coventry then harshly sacked, and very harshly sacked at QPR, but that club's a joke now anyway. Didn't get anywhere near enough time at charlton and anyone was going to fail after curbishley. But he does now have a track record for failure. Not sure I'd be confident of him coming in and staying 4 or 5 years. Perhaps 4 or 5 years is what he needs.............stability!!!......a word we have all forgotten. INHO of course.

Quinney and Keano springs to mind....Wasn't there sum Dutch guy at Southampton VERY close to a Chairman....
saint_stevo Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Would prefer WGS or even Ince, but better than Wotte

Pancake Posted 3 June, 2009 Author Posted 3 June, 2009 I think it might actually be Swansea that have made the approach.
NickG Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I think it might actually be Swansea that have made the approach. good point
ottery st mary Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Watford He lives in Hatfield area and Brendan Rogers off to Reading? Mind you Watford not relegated yet but play like a Div 1 side.
Tractor_Saint Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 MLT would know Dowie well. I knew him for a while when he played for us (went out with his sister in law), he's a decent bloke and I'd love to see him here. I'd probably keep a low profile if you used to go out with his brother's wife !!
Rebel Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Promoted Crystal Palace after taking over them when in a near relegation position? Nothing? and other than an OK spell at Oldham that is about all he's done! was it the longest lucky winning streak in history? - quite possibly! Dowie was a disaster at QPR, Crystal Palace after promotion and way beyond that at Chartlon! and on the integrity stakes he actuallu makes Glen Hoddle look good!
Gingeletiss Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Everyone's forgetting about Stevie C.........I think that this could be the appointment. Please note, this is my opinion;)
Jackie@home Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 It's highly likely. Matt is a mate of his, and Dowie can have no certainty about what is going on at Newcastle. Apparently, they said at Coventry that his family were still living up north and this proved a problem, rather than his management ability. He will have to move them back south - this is a huge job that needs undidvided attention -travelling backwards and forwards to Lancashire won't be an option. Personally, I would prefer Paul Tisdale as Dowie's record is rather mixed.
Verbal Kint Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I really like Dowie as a manager. Hope we speak to both him and Tisdale and work from there.

ottery st mary Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I really like Dowie as a manager. Hope we speak to both him and Tisdale and work from there. Maybe both..money? Does not always work...But you never know.. As some say Cotterill, Coppel, Holmes, etc etc..Hopefully we will see soon.

eurosaint Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Treated like dirt at both QPR and Charlton but otherwise has not a bad track record ! Given a choice between him and Wotte, I would snap him up sharpish before he goes elsewhere !
Scummer Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I'd probably keep a low profile if you used to go out with his brother's wife !! Wife's sister.
Saint_Ash Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 We are in the 3rd tier of the football leagues, we can't actually pick and choose who we want, we're not that an attractive proposition (yet!) we'll have to start from the bottom and move our way up again, if we get Dowie I think it would be a step in the right direction. Would still prefer Tisdale but I'm sure his stock is even better than a L1 club now, wouldn't be surprised to see him at Swansea.
NickG Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I think both Tisdale and Dowie could be easily attracted here, depending on other offers. These are the only names I can think of so far who are both realistic and fairly popular. Who would you prefer? Think Tisdale would be a better long term option and may bring about more success. Dowie would offer higher profile, attract proven players and may give quicker return.
Chap in the Chapel Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I've always liked Dowie. He's got a good track record at our level of football and the one above, is an intelligent and articulate man, a former SFC player and is experienced in British football. He'd be a very good choice. His Crystal Palace team was perfectly set up to gain promotion to the Premier League as it was based around a fast attack with width, playing off a solid targetman, and had an experienced and physically powerful defence. I don't expect miracles next season, whoever is the manager, as 10 points will take some making up, but the season after that, a second-season team managed by Dowie could take some stopping.
Nexstar Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Can't see dowie staying at newcastle if shearer is there, no point basically having 2 managers at the club. I'd be happy if he came here.
moonraker Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I think he would be an excellent choice. He is very innovative with lots of ideas (was one of the first to have those American football style Microphones) and is intelligent - didn't he have a degree in engineering. MEng from University of Hertfordshire, which he still has. Good choice been athere and done it, success and failure but given the right backing more likley to succeed than not.

thorpie the sinner Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I know MB mentioned Wotte going back to his previous role, anyone heard anything concrete?

I'd be happy if he came here. think Shearer / Dowie only needed 5 points from their time in charge, 8 games to stay up - they got 4 out of possible 24 (just in case anyone can't work out 3x8!)
Sergei Gotsmanov Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 In Matty's testimonial programme - which I no longer have he mentions that he only has a few mates in football who he speaks to on a regular basis - one was Tim Flowers I cannot remember the others but I am not sure Dowie was included

They got 5 points (draws against Stoke and Pompey, win against Middlesbrough) and would have stayed up with 6. HTH.

Dicko Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Dowie would almost certainly bring Tim Flowers as his assistant It makes sense, people seem convinced MLT is still in contact with Shearer & Dowie, so a deal is likely (if he is Pinnacle's target)

SFC Forever Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I'd probably keep a low profile if you used to go out with his brother's wife !! Is it not possible that Dowie married her sister? She could have been single.
SFC Forever Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Though to be honest dowie in my book would do a good job for us. He has shown he knows how to get teams promoted and given a run he could do a job for us.
MarkSFC Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Dowie would be just ok. My hope is any of these (in order of preference): 1. Tisdale 2. D.Ferguson(even though unlikely!) 3. Coppell 4. Ince 5. Magilton NOT WOTTE!!!
Hopkins Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Dowie would be just ok. My hope is any of these (in order of preference): 1. Tisdale 2. D.Ferguson(even though unlikely!) 3. Coppell 4. Ince 5. Magilton NOT WOTTE!!! Would love to know what planet you are on. You and the guy who said they would prefer WGS or Ince. You really honestly think that Ferguson, Coppell and Ince would want to manage a league 1 club? You retard.
DT Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 I would welcome him. MLT " Ian, i'm thinking about bringing in some new faces " Dowie " Great, can I have one " v v good
MarkSFC Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Would love to know what planet you are on. You and the guy who said they would prefer WGS or Ince. You really honestly think that Ferguson, Coppell and Ince would want to manage a league 1 club? You retard. As I said, Ferguson is unlikely. You clearly have a very negative outlook on life. I pity you. Cant remember if Coppell has, but Ince and DF have already managed in League One so maybe the retard quip is more suited to someone who has clearly got annoyed over someones "wishlist". IMO (and maybe I should PM you to get your approval first?) Saints are potentially going to be a very exciting project going forward (assuming everything pans out) so there WILL be huge interest in the managers job, that if it ever went public. My belief is that if MLT is involved, the wheels will alrready be in motion.
CWD Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 Although I think its unlikely, I reckon Coppell would be the best choice. TBH he seemed pretty downbeat after leaving Reading so maybe he would enjoy some time away from the intense media spotlight? Tisdale would certainly be the more realistic choice, and I would be over the moon should it happen. That said I dont think Dowie would be a bad appointment. I wouldnt be jumping for joy but he does have the aggression and passion needed to get out of this league. Also I dont think Ince is way out of the question - we have to remember he moved to Blackburn from MK Dons, and failed. I dont think a return to league 1 to continue learning his trade would be completely unrealistic
Red Stripe Posted 3 June, 2009 Posted 3 June, 2009 This guy seems to bring baggage with him, wherever he's been!
