TijuanaTim Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Okay, so this maybe a little lighter than some stuff of late, but I have a question for all. I have a Saints coffee mug...one of the good ones from the old 'Dell' shop. I got it in 1994. Three weeks or so before the end of the season...almost exactly 'admin-day' I dopped it and the handle broke into four large parts. I can clearly afford a new one, but I have used it everyday at my business for 15 years, so do I use some ceramic cement and fix it? The reason I ask is, maybe it's kind of symbolic being broken?? Should I not repair it until our beloved Saints are repaired? Should I replace it to symbolize a fresh start? Or as first asked, should I repair the cup as our club is being put back together? Or maybe should I just not think about all things 'Saints' too much?

Under Weststand Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 LOL Tim think your drinking far to much coffee mate. I'd wait a couple of weeks & get a bright new shiny one to go (hopefully) with are bright new shiny club.

Victor Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Repair it, because: 1. I'm superstitious too. 2. If you've been using it for 15 years and it still looks good, you'll never be able to get another of that quality. The red on the current transfer one goes orange in a year or two. Also, the top half of the picture of my CMFG one that I used at work disappeared completely, like Chris's hair - spooky, so you could be right about the symbolism.
TijuanaTim Posted 1 June, 2009 Author Posted 1 June, 2009 Awesome...every one of these answers made me smile in different ways FFS
ottery st mary Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 I can clearly detect that you have broken your dinner set and therefore looking for the sympathy vote, with fellow posters sending you out many mugs. Either that or you are about to present many prizes at an end of season prizegiving and seek Saints mugs as star prizes...I will send out two in the post. One for you and one for Ron..At least you will have two cups when he visits you. Hope he is recovering well from his last op. COYRs
Yate Saint Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 I reckon you should repair it but wait until all the takeover is confirmed and when we know who the mystery man is. While repairing it you will have a large grin on your face and you will know that your mugs repair will represent the repair of a once great football club.

Toadhall Saint Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 I'd offer you my 80's one but **** that it took me ages to get it!
Polaroid Saint Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 You're not having mine. I dropped it the other day and had one of those heart in mouth moments before it decided to bounce, thankfully and magically, like some sort of fabled Indian rubber glass, up off the kitchen tiles. I too took this bounce as symbolic of our current situation... ...bloody superstitious bunch football fans; and especially so at Saints n all.
Ronaldo's a pansy Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Did Rupert Lowe push you and make you drop it ?
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=12442 I started a similar thread in April. Looking back, it's a prediction which is (now!) likely to come true.
Give it to Ron Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Funny how we cling to things like signs...I posted the other month that driving by The Saints pub in Millbrook there was a sign - Under New Management re-opening in May.

Or maybe should I just not think about all things 'Saints' too much? About a year ago there used to be a ceramics repair artist who had a studio in one of the antiques shops in the old Northam Road between the King Alfred and St Mary Street. I used to pass it every match day. Probably been emptied or pulled down now, but worth asking around in one of the remaining shops. Alternatively try your local version of Yellow Pages under China (ceramics) and Glass Repairs. West Dean College in Sussex does train ceramics repair craftspeople. They have a list of student and graduate trainees including international graduates. http://www.westdean.org.uk/college/index.html I have used ceramics cement, but my attempts at repaired handles used to soften and wobble when warm which was hilarious (for others).

Then again, given it's almost 15 years old I reckon it's older than some of the buildings over your way:D
aintforever Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 It's hardly brought you good luck, I would finish it off with a hammer and bury the pieces in the garden.
dubai_phil Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Nah.... It sent you a message - we needed a clean break.
benjii Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Anyone who believes in superstition is a complete mug.
TijuanaTim Posted 1 June, 2009 Author Posted 1 June, 2009 You vvankers - I am even more confused what to do with it now, at least I am laughing FFS
suewhistle Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Buy a new one. The club need all the turnover they can get, but maybe wait another 20 days...
Weston Super Saint Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Leave it as it is and have a Saints 'beaker' instead
Saint Bones Posted 2 June, 2009 Posted 2 June, 2009 Repair it - or retire it to a ornament That same mug is one of the reasons I started supporting Saints as it was given to us after a season of (Soccer ). I had to findout who these Southampton lads were... If it makes you feel any better my handles has cracekd and broken too - its now on my Saints shrine
Redondo Saint Posted 2 June, 2009 Posted 2 June, 2009 get a new old one...? I need a new one too, Mine got nicked coz I think the thief thought it was a Chivas USA mug!

derry Posted 2 June, 2009 Posted 2 June, 2009 Tim, if it means that much to you, you can get it restored to perfect, It isn't expensive in real terms, don't mess it up with glue. I have sent you a pm.
fareham saint phil Posted 2 June, 2009 Posted 2 June, 2009 Repair it, then mount the bloody thing on a plinth and worship it everyday from now, in the meantime buy a new one plenty to choose from, sure the MLT testimonial ones should be restocked by now and flying off the shelf
hamster Posted 2 June, 2009 Posted 2 June, 2009 You vvankers - I am even more confused what to do with it now, at least I am laughing FFS Seriously Tim, bin it. Do you realise how many nasty organisms lie within the cracked or chipped cup or mug?
TijuanaTim Posted 2 June, 2009 Author Posted 2 June, 2009 Seriously Tim, bin it. Do you realise how many nasty organisms lie within the cracked or chipped cup or mug? I'm no germophobe mate, us Saints fans have stronger constitutions FFS ;-) ...Fareham has an idea, worship it...maybe a bit extreme, but I like the train of thought. The coffee mug was used this morning I have to admit, maybe it's in 'administration' or having a stay of execution FFS
Steel City Saint Posted 2 June, 2009 Posted 2 June, 2009 Wow, are we having an oldest mug competition? I've got one upstairs (just checked) which dates back to the 80s. It has a great big crack in it (has done for years) so no hot drinks anymore but happy with cold water for washing paint brushes in! Don't fix the mug, uses it with the broken handles like a real man!

As a cheapskate I bought up the fayre the following August along wth loads of other bits and pieces (including that clasy mirror!!!!) for half price.
TijuanaTim Posted 4 June, 2009 Author Posted 4 June, 2009 I have these. They belonged to my uncle. Awesome FFS!!
Toadhall Saint Posted 4 June, 2009 Posted 4 June, 2009 I have these. They belonged to my uncle. I wouldn't mind the one on the right.
um pahars Posted 4 June, 2009 Posted 4 June, 2009 August '76 FFS? I also got the Bay City Rollers Board game and some six buttoned high waisters as well from the stall which was the forerunner of Gill Bros. Still got th 1976 Silk Scarf bought back in May though, that's all my pocket money would stretch to LOL.

I liked Sydneys in St Marys Rd but a bit more expensive or Phillips in East St. Sorry not Saints related.
yorkie Posted 4 June, 2009 Posted 4 June, 2009 Crickey '76 memorabilia - I've still got a 1-pint mug with crest and FA Cup Winners on...I quickly moved on to proper glasses - any mug can use a handle! Not seen much use - open to offers!
um pahars Posted 4 June, 2009 Posted 4 June, 2009 With patch pockets? trevira style? I liked Sydneys in St Marys Rd but a bit more expensive or Phillips in East St. Sorry not Saints related. LOL at Phillips. It took them a while to notice that people were only using the last changing room as that led straight to their window display where it was help yourself time!!!!!! And going back to Gill Bros I'm sure that was they took over the shop from Phillips.

Yep I think you are right about Gill Bros they did so well on Kingsland Market they opened several shops.
TijuanaTim Posted 8 July, 2009 Author Posted 8 July, 2009 So...now do I repair my mug or buy a new one? We are not broken any more, the hurt is over. Our beloved family has recovered from a potentially terminal illness. Rejoice FFS Are Saints mended or is this a fresh start...it's significant in my coffee cup repair or replace process ;-)
chrisobee Posted 8 July, 2009 Posted 8 July, 2009 Every Saints mug I've ever had I have broken so I'm not the one to give advice really but I will and say buy a new one you cheap skate (oops sorry to swear!)
chrisobee Posted 8 July, 2009 Posted 8 July, 2009 Rarely can a discussion about a broken mug have reached 50 posts!!
