dubai_phil Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Assuming all goes well in the next few days and our new regime come marching in, I believe that with Rudi's departure and the pending return of Le God, we should retire the No 7 Shirt from the football playing squad. With MLT helping to pull it all together and being a part of the club again, it would not seem right that the shirt is worn on the pitch. In addition to being a mark of respect, it would be a commercial money-spinner as well, as the fans could then buy Le Tissier 7 shirts to show their support for the club and the legend
JustMike Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 + 1, like the idea about the Le Tissier 7 shirt too. Id buy one
brightspark Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Thirded. Think that would be appropriate, considering it is hard to think of someone who has served any club better than Le Tiss has to us.
dubai_phil Posted 1 June, 2009 Author Posted 1 June, 2009 Sounds like something to put to Tony Lynam when he does his Q&A session then
Matthew Le God Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 As Matt is playing a large part in the running of the club on the football side would he be ok with this as it would look abit egotistical?
dubai_phil Posted 1 June, 2009 Author Posted 1 June, 2009 As Matt is playing a large part in the running of the club on the football side would he be ok with this as it would look abit egotistical? If he decided to do it himself of course, but if it was a fan driven "crusade" then I would think not. Somebody needs to do another Facebook Group
Robsk II Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Or do a poll on here and use it as a weigh to guage fan support?

Ponty Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 so we would be retiring shirt after Skacel??!! Yeah, it's a nice sentiment but I don't know if Rudi was actually THAT good.
Charlie24 Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Yeah, it's a nice sentiment but I don't know if Rudi was actually THAT good. I assumed he wanted to honour Kanchelskis.
Red and White Army Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 I don't like the idea of retiring shirts, too sad and American for my taste.
Saint 76er Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Retire it... and then hang a huge replica from the stadium rafters on match day. Will be an inspiration and rallying point for the fans in the ground (and hopefully the players too!). Matt saved us at the last moment on the pitch so often, and now it looks like he's returned to do it again.... Le God = Le Gend!!!
Isla Wight Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Seems a bit pointless to me - especially several years after he retired from playing.
Saint137 Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 When he retired Matty said he didn't want it retired...
Badger Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 I don't like the idea of retiring shirts, too sad and American for my taste. Agree totally.I'd also add that it is pretty childish as well. MLT was a great player who wore the 7 shirt, arguably the greatest for Saints. But lets not forget that Paine,Ball and Keegan also wore that number. Wearing the No 7 shirt should be an inspiration to whoever is selected to wear it. If we continually drop numbers - No 8 for Mick Channon and 9 for Ron Davies seem deserving also- we will end up with an even more ridiculous numbering system than we already have.
rallyboy Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 like it, and the fact that Rudi has rested the shirt for a while and kept it clean and sweat-free makes it a natural progression. Replica shirt sales would soar as I can't imagine there are many players' names in the current squad you would want on a shirt.
The9 Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 Just for a little background, retired shirts are mostly after players' deaths - with some exceptions... http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/may/27/football-the-knowledge-retired-shirts The nearest comparison is that West Ham retired the number 6 shirt for Bobby Moore 15 years after he died... though it was also 30 years after he last played football. I think it's a good idea FWIW... Though we'd have to ignore Kanchelskis, Phillips, Hajto and Skacel... (any more since Matty?)

Bourno Posted 1 June, 2009 Posted 1 June, 2009 No thanks, keep it for inspiration...we will need it in League 1.
