Matt Le Tissier

I think the best way of doing that is turning up in our droves for every game - there's no reason why we can't be the best supported team in this division (yes, even with Leeds in it - whose fans must be getting somewhat disillusioned).

In short, we need to repay the faith Matt has shown, and the hope he's given us, by ensuring they get a return on their investment through the turnstiles.

Matt Le Tissier is the genius that England missed out on but all Saints fans should remember for all forthcoming generations.. One of the most naturally gifted football players of any generation without a shadow of a doubt. Heartfelt thank you.

It's really odd on here because every figure in saint's history except ted bates and MLT has at least someone on here who hates them and wants a moan about them. It's nice that this doesn't happen for these two.

Hard to imagine any sane person having a bad word about the likes of Channon, Ossie, Bally, Golac etc etc; But then again there are plenty of insane people about, many of whom seem to congregate on here ;)

I have proposed that we should consider having a bronze statue done of MLT. It should be placed by the Players Entrance at the front of SMS - a bust would do for now, to be upgraded to full statue on our return to the Premiership! - and it should have 'LOYALTY' engraved on the plinth so that each player when he arrives at SMS sees it and has it drilled into him that there are greater accolades to be had than just chasing cash in football.

When this deal goes through and Saints are officially saved... maybe Leon Crouch and the Ted Bates Statue Committee may consider leading the work for such an honour to him, a la the second TB statue.

You sure?

Give it time - should Matt be manager/chairman/some other important capacity, if the takeover does indeed go through, and when we lose (when / not if) 3 to 4 games on the trot, OR god forbid something goes drastically wrong with Pinnacle (ala Lowe/Wilde etc. etc.), he will be equally vilified by probably the same usual suspects.

Personally I would l rather he did not have a significant role moving forward as his memory and reputation cannot be greater than it is now and it would be a shame for it to diminish in anyway. Let's not forget it is Pinnacle who approached him to "front" the bid (which does raise the obvious alarm bells already discussed in several other threads), and furthermore he publically stated that he would support any bid that would save Saints. More than happy for him to have an ambassadorial role but not a central one. I am sure I may get abuse for this but think about it - we all hero worshipped Channon (at the time probably more than Matty) before he went to the enemy - we all hero worshipped Lawrie before he found his spiritual home with "real football supporters" - etc. etc.

BTW, whilst I absolutely regard Matty as an absolute legend (in the true sense and not in the much abused term) and think he is one of the best ever Saints players, who I have had the pleasure of meeting on a couple of occasions, I do just wonder how many people commenting on this thread have followed his entire Saints career, from reserves to now? Nothing negative as he has my greatest respect and admiration, but it does make me feel sorry for other players in less glamorous positions who I feel, have made a great playing (and I emphasise playing) contribution - Nick Holmes is just one example !

I doubt it. I remember the old anecdote that Matt used to joke with the players (in our prem days) that he could take us down to League 1 and still not get booed by the fans. Well, Mr. Lowe has seen to the first bit of that scenario, but I do think there is some truth in what Matt joked - he would be given significant leeway, much more than anyone else, and let's hope we don't have to put it to the test (I don't think we will).

He IS going to have a significant role (TL has said as much) so get used to it. I suspect it will be something like DoF. Per above, it won't impact what he achieved as a player, and remember, we might not have a club but for Matt and Pinnacle, which just adds to his legend. Your analogy with Channon/Lawrie doesn't really work for me, as Matt isn't going anywhere, in fact he's coming home. I know what you are saying though - that you're worried that continued bad performance will diminish his lustre, but we have to take that 'gamble' and I for one am delighted he'll play a part in our future (success).

Not sure of the age demographic of this site, but everyone old enough will have followed his whole career (assuming they've always been Saints fans!). I certainly remember his free-scoring reserve days, then that magical night a skinny kid took apart Ron Atkinson's Man Utd (and got Ron the sack!).

I think all of our other great servants recognised that Matty is just "special" - he is a one off, a unique maverick, and sadly we won't see his like again, but who cares? We still have the real thing!

COYR!!!

the club, the city.. all of us owe everything to Matt Le GOD.. Once again he has rescued us from the "brink"..

what a true legend and by doing this he has out himself above all legends we have had before him...

thank you matt

I hope we see a lot more "Le Tissier" number 7 shirst next season..the man is simply a legend..

I am all in favour of a statue of him at the front of the ground.. Him and TED at the front are all this club is all about (and lawrie mac too)...

lets get a statue of matt there I would be willing to donate a large chunk..

I know matt would be too modest but he is one in a million to us generation of saints fans..

by the way. NORWAY (Bergen) is fantastic

Quite right.

I ****ing love the man.

I wasn't prepared to give anything to SOS as I thought it was a crushing waste of money but I would happily give something back to Matt and I couldn't care less if he's already loaded.

Emotional happiness of the kind provided by him in my formative years can't be valued. He's one of the most life-afirming things I've witnessed.

Pathetic sentamentalism. Misguided hyperbole. Shocking immature nonsense. Whatever... **** off.

Legend in the true sense.

I only hope his involvement never leads to the castigation that a few sage others have referred to as this would be truly tragic.

As I said on the OTHER thread ( ;) ) it will surely never happen. I'm sure Matt is astute enough to be a pretty wealthy guy notwithstanding the clear fact he could have made a lot more money if he had ever asked for a transfer. He is in this purely for his love of the club and like us all is a true supporter in every sense. It's been referred to many times his reaction on Sky when Saints scored the goal that staved off relegation last season. An extraordinary person but totally genuine, modest and a real breath of fresh air in the current climate of overpaid, arrogant players who blight our game. He's a true one off and we are incredibly lucky to have him associated with the club.

It's been years since anything as good as this has happened to us and I for one am truly going to look on the bright side of life.
