La BoIS Saint Posted 28 May, 2009 Share Posted 28 May, 2009 I know this is all a bit Reservoir Dogs but any ***** who doesn't tip is a *****. This got explained to me in the US. Basically the waiting staff are assumed to have received 10 - 15% AS TIPS AND THIS GETS SPREAD AMONgST THE REST OF THE STAFF. iF YOU DON'T TIP THEY ARE PAYING TO SeRVE YOU. nOT SURE IF IT IS THE SAME IN THE uk BUT FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN TOTALLY RANK BAD SERVICE YOU SHOULD TIP. uNLESS YOU ARE A *****. Dinner ladies get paid enough money these days, so I wouldn't tip them in future. Nice thought though.

In the US however its totally different, their basic wage is tiny and tips are their main income, a decent waiter in the US will make a couple of hundred $ in a night. Besides, ALL tips should be declared to the Inland Revenue and the relevant tax paid, I wonder how many actually declare their FULL tips?

I think there's been a test case recently (or one is coming up) to challenge a restaurant owner who INCLUDED tips when reckoning up the minimum wage. Can't be bothered to research it. However, not paying a tip doe not make you a ****. That's a stupid thing to say. The problem surely stems from the people who pay the wages in the first place. If you're that bothered about the poor pay of waiting staff then you should address the matter directly with their employers. Failing to do that would make you a ****. Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 I think there's been a test case recently (or one is coming up) to challenge a restaurant owner who INCLUDED tips when reckoning up the minimum wage. Can't be bothered to research it. The Employment Tribunal case allowed tips to make up the minimum wage, but effectively only cash tips from customers. However, that was only where an independent tronc system was in operation, not controlled by the employer. From October this year, all employees must be paid the legal minimum wage. Tips will no longer be allowed to make up part of that wage but will be paid on top. Service charges and tips paid by card belong to the business and do not have to be shared with the staff. Remember, if you want to tip by all means do so, but insist that the management remove the service charge from your bill and pay the equivalent in cash to the waiter/ess. That ensures that the right people get the tip. The basis for tips is 10% of the cost of the meal less the drinks.

Smirking_Saint Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 I only tip if i seriously believe that the waiter has done a decent job and the place i am eating in does not automatically add a 10% service charge to the bill (which annoys me). Anyone else, for me does not get a tip, they are being paid, if i do it myself... why tip ? If they have been god awful ? why tip ? Further to the US and the European arrangement, why would i want to tip some **** that expects me to tip him just for being there ?? I appreciate that they are not paid that well and in that case they should be looking to provide a good service to increase the said tip. (that being said i usual give a small tip abroad just to avoid the bloody aggro you get for not tipping... however that being said they provide a good service i provide more tip...... simples) Also..... with teh service charge ? Do you HAVE to pay it or can you argue ?
Dog Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 I have just left a tip to the equivalent of 20%. If I get good service throughout my meal or the waitress flashes a bit of rind then they get a decent tip, however if the waitress or waiter is a lazy ****, scruffy or ginger, then I tend to leave a fiver or more off the bill and tell them that is all they are getting, as I need the tip more than them as I have just been served by a tramp with down syndrome. Mole Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 When i was in Tenerife i noticed how the waiters didn't bring my full change back to the exact cent. This ****ed me off and they didn't like it when i demanded the correct change back. I made a point of not tipping those who did this.

hamster Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 In US I never had cause to not tip threre as I find their service second to none. I think that over there people CHOOSE table waiting as a career and hence do it well. Over here, I have a rule that if you get tothe end of your meal and have enjoyed the whole experience, without hardly noticing the waiting staff then they have done their job to perfection. Occasionally, I may wish for them to engage in light conversation, but mostly I want to speak the my friends rather than them. That is worth 5% in your back pocket if you can pull it off. Weston Super Saint Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 Also..... with teh service charge ? Do you HAVE to pay it or can you argue ? You are legally obliged to pay what you think the meal was worth I tend to feel that if a Restaurant gives table service then I will tip if the service is good. hamster Posted 29 May, 2009 Share Posted 29 May, 2009 5% for perfection? Tightwad. Working for *** I get sweet fa for perfection. Incidentally, if anyone chooses the 'all you can stuff down your esophagus' option at Little Budha in Shirley, they bring it to your table and they could not be more servile, which contrary to my last post, does usually earn them a generous 10% tip, especially if we've had time to quaff a few pints of ale in the Giddy Bridge beforehand.
