Just thought I would put together some opinions to try to settle the Pompey is better than Southampton argument:

Attendances - Portsmouth win (All time Ave 17,780 versus 17,214)

Attendance as % of Population - Portsmouth win

A fair enough assessment, apart from attendances, accepting that there were factors beyond our control which affected the figures. Ever since Premiership stadia had to become all-seater, we were hampered by having a smaller stadium than you at just 15300 or so.

Just thought I would put together some opinions to try to settle the Pompey is better than Southampton argument:

The Cities

Population - Saints win

Average Income - Saints win

Average House price - Saints win

Visiting Toursist - Portsmouth win (Surely?????)

Best Place to live - who knows, and frankly, who cares I live in Reading and its a hole

The Football

Current Position - Portsmouth win

Old Stadia (Like for Like) - Portsmouth win

New Stadia (Like for Like) - Who knows? Say, Saints win though just to be fair

Facilities (Like for Like) - Cant really compare New with Old but if you insist - Saints win

Attendances - Portsmouth win (All time Ave 17,780 versus 17,214)

Attendance as % of Population - Portsmouth win

Silverware - Portsmouth win, by some distance

Time spent in top flight - Portsmouth currently win by 1 season. Am prepared to be corrected as some sources seem to suggest its even.

Cant really think of anything else, but to summarise:

Southampton is a nicer place to live, but Portsmouth is prob better for a visit.

Football wise, its pretty much hands down Portsmouth - apart from bricks and mortar and that really has nothing to do with football anyway imo. Who knows that will most likely change in the next ten years anyway.

Or over the last 50 years, in the lifetime of anyone who is still young enough to remember...

The Cities

Population - Saints win

Average Income - Saints win

Average House price - Saints win

Visiting Toursist - Portsmouth win because you have some old boats

Best Place to live - Saints win

The Football

Current Position - Portsmouth win

Old Stadia (Like for Like) - Saints win - Dell was small but still not as **** as Fratton Park

New Stadia (Like for Like) - Saints win - Your new stadia consists of a roof on the away end

Facilities (Like for Like) - Saints win

Attendances - Saints win

Attendance as % of Population - Saints win

Silverware - 1 FA Cup each

Overall performance in cups - Saints win

Time spent in top flight - Saints win

Highest top flight finish- Saints win

Well things tend to go in circles when referring to clubs like Pompey and Saints. I can recall very clearly the 3 years I spent studying at Portsmouth Poly 1975/78. When I started we were both in Div 2 as it was then. By the time I left we had just got promoted and of course won the FA Cup, Pompey had just been relegated to Division 4 which mirrors pretty much the story of recent times. Those were great years and of course I had the bragging rights over the many Pompey fans I knew and who were friends. For this reason I have never really bought into the Saints/Pompey antipathy. For sure they do have probably more than there fair share of morons but having known many fans who were just ordinary fans I find it hard to feel too much ill will towards them. Maybe I'm in a minority of one though I will say I HATE losing to them as much as the next Saints fan !

Given that in just a couple of years outside the top flight your gates fell by 60% or more I don't know what you're gloating about. If you were in the same financial position we were for years back then how long do you think it would have been before your gates fell to that level?

Interestingly, we were getting gates as big as you when we were in the old Div 4 in our promotion season and you were in the top flight

Funny how you have a weasily little excuse for decades and decades of p*ss poor attendances.

When were you in the fourth division? Oh, 1978. Christ, who cares

Any chance of posting on a forum about your own football club. Weirdo.

Come on, you have to have to have put on some serious Saints spectacles to be able to delude yourself that Saints are more sucessful than Pompey.

You cant just select what period you want to make it fit.

As for The Dell being bigger than Fratton - no chance and everyone here will agree. 15 k all seater v 20 k all seater. What do they teach you guys at school:D

Where did he say that the Dell was bigger than Krap Nottarf?

Regarding the aspect of which club was more successful, that needs to be qualified by adding "in living memory"

Apart from recently, I have never consciously known Portsmouth to be successful and I am 60 this month. So fair enough to say that most fans of either club cannot remember the last time that Pompey were really successful, apart from a short stint back in the top flight under Alan Ball.

So to sum up apart from when we have been sucessful, you can't remember us being sucessful. I think you're suffering from Bridesmaid syndrome having been runners up too many times.

I think Southampton used to be a more attractive city than Portsmouth but whereas Portsmouth have improved with the Tower, Mary rose, Warrior and many more flowers around the place, by contrast your Council seems to have concentrated on traffic lights. I've had regular cause to visit Southampton for the past ten years. Where's your big Titanic Museum-There isn't one unless you count that pidly little thing on the front. You've just stood still and been overtaken- and that applies to the city as much as the football club. Time for your council to wake up,

all fair and right. Unless you want to start going on to say Accrington Stanley are better than Chelsea -50 years is good period.

I have lived in both places and so am therefore qualified to express an opinion. Have you? My mother still loves in Southsea and I visit Portsmouth often to see her and to visit clients of my business, several of whom are in Portsmouth and the immediate surrounding areas. I probably know both areas better than most people from a perspective spanning nearly 60 years.

If you reckon that we have anything quite so dire as Paulsgrove and Leigh Park, it is you who is delusional. I am not talking about just shops, or about specific things, but about the quality of life that embraces all of those aspects, including the surrounding hinterland, crime levels, infrastrucure, local education, community facilities, everything. I'll reiterate; take away Southsea and Old Portsmouth and the rest of your little island is a complete hole.

So you're saying Portsmouth is just Portsea Island? Even allowing for the fact that you've left the Gunwharf residential area off your list (plus places like the old Marine Barracks development) and that Southsea and Old Portsmouth probably take up a third or so of the Island anyway so it can't be that bad. Add in areas like Port Solent, Drayton, Farlington and Havant (don't confuse Leigh Park with Havant, plenty of properties in Havant are worth well over a million) and your argument starts to look very flimsy. Also, if you seriously think that areas like Millbrook and Lordshill aren't every bit as bad as Paulsgrove and Leigh Park then it's you who's delusional.

On the subject of house prices, the overall average may be slightly higher in Southampton but it depends on what kind of property you buy. According to the BBC, if you want to buy a detached house or flat then the average price in Portsmouth is higher. I suspect that the overall average is skewed upwards in your favour due to the fact that there are so many terraced houses in Portsmouth which would drive the asking price down due to so much availability.

Finally, talking about which is the better place to live, the latest stats on social deprivation that I could find showed that Southampton and Portsmouth are practically neck and neck, ranked at numbers 91 and 93 out of 354 local authorities. Both are in the top 10 in the South East. Interestingly, you're ranked as the 4th most deprived compared to Pompey being the 5th. Paints a slightly different picture from the semi - paradise you seemed to be suggesting.

And how convenient for you Saints that the "Good Period" happens to start when you get better and we get worse.

My Mum would be very pleased to know that the FA Cup win and Championship she witnessed no longer counts!!!

Still, looking on the bright side only another forty years and Saints will have no honours - using the same logic.

You can only compare the whole - I know you like to cherry pick but come on.

Yes, one third of the island is Old Portsmouth and Southsea and the remaining two thirds is a **** hole. Even parts of Southsea and Old Portsmouth are **** holes. And if you're considering the areas around Portsmouth, then Port Solent, Drayton, Farlington and Havant aren't bad in parts. But Romsey is as close to Southampton as Havant is, but I didn't count it as it is in a separate Borough, as is Havant. I lived near Havant for about 15 years, so am perfectly well qualified to talk about that and also to know that Leigh Park is not just the worst council estate in the South, but also ranks pretty high nationally.

Yes, and it's all those terraced houses that make Portsmouth the South's very own Coronation Street. Row upon row of dismal uniformity and lack of greenery. OK, the planners couldn't help it, land availability being at a premium on a small island, but it is the heritage you are left with and which brings down the whole area.

As I said, I've lived in both. I am yet to receive an answer to my question as to whether you had. IMO, Southampton is the far better place to live. If you care to look at the same figures for Eastleigh and Winchester, both on our doorstep, they both figured high in surveys for wealthiest per capita, highest employment, etc. Quality of life also has to reflect the hinterland around the cities too, where we have great maritime facilities especially for sailing, the New Forest on our doorstep, ease of access to three major cathedral cities, good motorway links to London, along the coast to Bournemouth and Poole, good transport links to the rest of the country by rail and access to Europe from our airport. When you come to look at all these things, that is what makes the quality of life here better than in Portsmouth.

Like Southampton, Pompey is a UK city. That means parts of it are nice and parts of it are rough. Same as anywhere else. I included Havant because while I agree it's some way out of the city you were the one who started talking about Leigh Park which is only a mile or two away. Similarly, you were the one who included Paulsgrove when it's not on Portsea island which was the area you were specifically talking about originally. Leigh Park is **** but certainly no worse than your very own Flowers Estate.

LOL. Like Southampton isn't full of terraced houses.

ROTFPMSL. I haven't lived in Southampton but did work there for a few years and found it to be a strangely soulless place. Just taking your other points what kind of drugs are you on?

1. Ref Winchester/ Eastleigh (Eastleigh ROTFPMSL) - see Chichester

2. Ref maritime facilities - We are on the Solent. We also have sailing. LOL

3. Ref: New Forest - South Downs

4. Ref: Access to cathedral cities - are you having a laugh? If not, Pompey is one of only few cities in the UK to have two cathedrals. Plus we have access to Chichester.

5. Ref: transport links - had you not realised that we also have road and rail links to the rest of the country and access to Southampton airport is only about 15 mins away. Yes, you have an airport. Hurrah.

i.e. the things you're offering as proof that the quality of life is better in Southampton have no advantages over life in Portsmouth.

You're not going to be able to provide any evidence from surveys to change my mind, so I'm fed up wasting time on people who ought to be on their own forums. End of posts on this subject.

But I have provided evidence that what people are saying on here is wrong. the evidence of social deprivation being worse in Southampton comes from your own city.

Ok I agree that Portsmouth has improved as a City. Now, what are you going to do about the ugly gene that afflicts the people?

Great example of Skate logic - The average house prices are not a good reflection because the huge amount of terraced slums in Portsmouth skew the results in our favour. LOL

You see that's it aint it...the M27 is like a big see-saw, when one club is doing well the other is generally appalling.

Goes back a long way, like when they got lucky well over half a century ago. Those "bigger crowds" they go on about back then were a result of the rest of the country’s misfortune. You see WW2 came along the top clubs lost their best players to National Service but with ‘Portsmyth’ being a naval port many were stationed there to do their bit and were permitted to act as guest players for them giving them a somewhat unfair advantage over other weakened teams. This led to their little successful era but as it was as a result of the unusual circumstances maybe we should really disregard this period :)

So this encouraged more locals to turn up (glory-hunters?) and many travelled the 17 miles down the old A27 from Southampton to watch these star names (there wasn’t the bitter animosity back then, that came later in the 60s when they couldn’t handle us taking over - nothing to do with fictitious Dock strikes) and probably the biggest factor being they allowed all the servicemen based in the area free entry into fartton park which obviously swelled the crowds enormously. I wonder how many were actually p*mpey fans in those attendances?

I really can't be arsed to read back to the OP and check statistics. The idiom that there are lies, damned lies and statistics is well known, also that one can provide statistics to prove virtually anything.

You might not have said which team you support, but as you arrived on this Saints site all of a sudden at a time of turbulence in this club's history and many of your posts are on the topics of which club or which city is better and you argue in favour of Portsmouth, then it is reasonable to conclude that you are a Skate on a wind-up. If I have got that wrong, then you will prove it by a post history in the future. In the meantime, I see no reason to change my opinion.

And by the way, I always consider it to be the case that when somebody has to resort to name-calling, then they have lost the argument.

Not at all. You open your mouth and put your foot in it if you think that my referring to the preponderance of tattoos on Portsmouth's women folk amounts to name calling. Do you dispute it? It would only be name calling if you were one of them. Are you? A heavier weight intellectual than you might have made that differentiation and also have realised that it was a humorous remark too. It rather suggests that you are rather lacking in that department, perhaps.

Of course I checked up on your post history before commenting and unless it is incomplete or wrong, it shows that your first post was in early April, at a time that coincided with us being placed in administration, a time of great turbulence in our history as I suggested. It's indeed a sh*t hole. I should know I lived in North End for several years. Used to commute up to Winchester by train via Fratton. Southampton is not great but it's miles better than Portsmouth.

If only the dumber ones on here (if you live in West End for instance) could realise that.

Loved this quip!!!........from the Telegraph

Read what Norm said, attempt to try and comprehend it and act on it, realising at the same time, the irony of your post. It shouldn't be that difficult for somebody of either your towering intellect, or your ability to look up quotations on Google. While you are at it, reread what I said about those who have to insult other posters and take it from me that there are many on here who live in West End.

Perfect timing - The Daily Telegraph today - Sk*tesmuff - The new Malta. Bless

Boris Johnson just went up in my estimation!

Absolute gem Phil, loved the bit about the obsiety and crime rates being above the national average. The only things that its got in common with Malta are that it is as boring as **** and its a bombed out piece of rock.

I visited Southampton yesterday for only about the third time in the last five years, and I was amazed at the decline in the place - I was quite upset to see just how trashy and chav it is becoming (bit like pompey really). Boaded up shops , shops that were upmarket replaced by cheap shops and markets - could be the recession I suppose, but I cant say I have noticed any where else I occasionally visit (including pompey) declining on this scale.

So how many skates do we need on the main board? I don't think I have ever been on one of their websites? So why do they feel the need to come on here?

Maybe it is because more of us are literate.
