Legod Third Coming Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Ok, ok, so we're not likely to be winning the Champions League in my lifetime, but I just hope and pray that whomever takes over looks at some of the best clubs in the world and models us on them. Not on their respective trophy cabinets per se, but the qualities of their club - the way it's run, the people who play for it, the way they conduct themselves and their VALUES - what they are about. And for me, we could do a lot worse than look at the way Barcelona represents not just their club, but their city and the Catalan people. Setting ourselves some sporting values we could do a lot worse you know.
Made in Southampton Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 But seriously - Iniesta is by far an under rated player in Barcas squad everyone goes on about Messi (Class I know) but watch Iniesta this second half the way he plays is just sublime.
bridge too far Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I like the fact that, instead of selling their souls and shirt fronts to a high bidder, they choose to promote UNICEF.
Legod Third Coming Posted 27 May, 2009 Author Posted 27 May, 2009 I like the fact that, instead of selling their souls and shirt fronts to a high bidder, they choose to promote UNICEF. That's what I mean - only ever had one sponsor in their history - a movement for children...
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 A deserved win. Why does Ronaldo, with all his undoubted skills, spoil his performance with such petulant antics?
StuRomseySaint Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 A deserved win. Why does Ronaldo, with all his undoubted skills, spoil his performance with such petulant antics? Because he cares? To be fair, I would have liked to see some Saints players putting the boot in, losing the discipline etc when we were losing games last season, at least that would have gave us a clue that they gave a toss.
hamster Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I like the fact that, instead of selling their souls and shirt fronts to a high bidder, they choose to promote UNICEF. Messi? Nope, Henry signs for SWF actually.
bridge too far Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Messi? Nope, Henry signs for SWF actually. In the Barca shirt - it's that bloke from Neighbours again!
StuRomseySaint Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Sir Alex Ferguson, Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Eamon Holmes, Sir Matt Busby, Jamie Turner, Mick Hucknall, John Virgo, Patrick Kielty.... .... your boys took one hell of a beating!
kpturner Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I like the fact that, instead of selling their souls and shirt fronts to a high bidder, they choose to promote UNICEF. That is because they have enough money already.
Chorlton Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 That is because they have enough money already. Unlike United,, Milan, Citeh, bin dippers, Juve etc etc? Though I think their fans wouldprefer they just gave money to Unicef rather than have the shirt 'defaced'. Fair play to them though (and Villa)

Or we could try and shoot for a million members if you like... after all, everyone's proved THAT would work in the last couple of weeks with their unwavering commitment to attending the various planned events, etc... or not.
SFC Forever Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Sorry folks but I don't get it. Man U have had a blindingly good season and met a team that has scored over 150 goals this season. Barca showed us all how good they are attacking and holding on to the ball. They earnt the right to boast for a year that they are the best there is at the moment. How can we gloat because Utd got stuffed? I bet a few of you would like to be in their position.

Fair play to them though (and Villa)True, but was this thread not about our team having the same values etc as Barcelona? I think our financial situation prevents us from sticking two fingers up at a potential shirt sponsor whereas Barcelona can - so in that regard we cannot emulate them......actually we can't emulate them in any regard can we?

Yeh, you are right, sorry. We may not be able to emulate Barca, but we are having a good go at emulating Valencia. They are on the verge of going out of business as well.
SFC Forever Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 See the skates have been bought by an arab sheik. Now they will be able to spend to stay where they are. Can't get any worse can it? Why can't we get someone to buy this club of ours so we can try to compete. Forget Barca we could well be watching our neighbours rise if they spend money wisely.

redder freak Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Barcelona easily beat what is probably Manchester United's best ever team. See http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2009/05/07/simply-the-best-115875-21338326/ Saints would do very well to take a few tips from Barcelona.

redder freak Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I somehow think there is more to it than taking a few tips - like being able to afford the best players in Europe for example. So where do they get their money from? How are they structured. That's what I mean.

I can only presume that you were not around to have seen the 1968 version.Especiallyafter watching their efforts today. Not fit to lace up their boots.
kpturner Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 So where do they get their money from? How are they structured. That's what I mean.Get real. Comparing Saints to Barcelona is like comparing MS Notepad to MS Word. I agree that we can emulate some of their values perhaps, but their structure and wealth is geared around a fan base and income that will always dwarf a provincial outfit on the south coast of England. They get their income from a source that we will never have. Using Spain as an example, we would be better off emulating the likes of Espanyol who have done well despite being in the shadow of their illustrious neighbours.
Jeff Le Taxi Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 I somehow think there is more to it than taking a few tips - like being able to afford the best players in Europe for example. Messi was home grown!

I have gloated about Manc defeats ever since about 1972, all through Saints good times and now in our darkest days. I gloat because it gives the glory hunting residents of Tewksbury, Willenhall, Rugby, Oadby, Kettering, Cambridge, Eastleigh and wherever a little slap and a warning that it's not all going their way.

Still, on a more positive note, was the first time for a while EricofArabia & myself have watched a game which DIDN'T have a goal inside the first minute, watching how badly they were made to perform we started a who looks most like Ryan Smith sweepstake.... Was a close call between Giggs, Park & Anderson, with Ferdinand doing a good job of trying to be Ollie Lancashire
Wes Tender Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 The Barcelona victory is a golden opportunity to make fun of all the plastics in the area that support them. All one has to do, is record the Queen/Freddy Mercury version of the song of that name on a portable CD and when a Man Ure fan is within hearing range, press the play button. The last time that we had such potential for sport against them locally was after the match when we beat them as the Dell when they wore the invisible grey strip. I had such fun for weeks afterwards, bumping into any wearing that strip and apologising that I had not seen them. I also had a wry smile, listening to the news that 50,000 United fans were making their way home after the match. Yeah, I thought; home to Margate, Tunbridge Wells, Yeovil, Llandudno, Benidorm, Majorca, etc.

Alanh Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 So where do they get their money from? How are they structured. That's what I mean. They get their money from the fact that Spanish clubs are allowed to sell their TV rights individually rather than collectively, like we do here. This means that Barca and Real get to generate about 15 times more TV revenue than the team at the bottom of La Liga. They also have 163,000 members who pay an annual subscription and a stadium that holds about 98K fans so generates a huge amount of income for each match even with the cheaper ticket prices that they have in Spain (compared to the UK).
bridge too far Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 I'm listening to Radio 5 atm and I've just heard that in Germany, TV money is split EQUALLY between ALL clubs in ALL the main leagues. Sounds good to me
kpturner Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 Messi was home grown!Very interesting - but so what? Nobody suggested that they don't develop players too.

Big Bad Bob Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 Right, so Barcelona, until Gary Lineker moved there, would only pick Catalan players for their club. They quickly realised that this was getting them nowhere so they dropped their moral stance on that to get themselves 'power and glory'. How long before they succumb to having a 'proper' shirt sponsor so they can move on to another level?

BTW Catalan players still make up the majority of their team.

How long before they succumb to having a 'proper' shirt sponsor so they can move on to another level? Could we not try this revolutionary idea of only selecting home grown talent through the academy....It might take a while to catch on..but with a couple of Continental visionary coaches we might rise to the top again... Now where will we find a leader with such forward thinking ideas.
Foxy Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 Messi? Nope, Henry signs for SWF actually. He looks older and shorter without the makeup and lights

Torbay Saint Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 Right, so Barcelona, until Gary Lineker moved there, would only pick Catalan players for their club. They quickly realised that this was getting them nowhere so they dropped their moral stance on that to get themselves 'power and glory'. How long before they succumb to having a 'proper' shirt sponsor so they can move on to another level? That is funny. I was in Barca the other day at the museum and I saw a board full of foreign players. There were many English players to play for Barca before Lineker. What struck me was how much of a brand Barca actually is. It is a global brand. If showed the club badge around the world it would be as identifiable as the nike logo etc. That's how Barca get their money. Southampton can never compete with that. But I agree, there is a lot about value that we could learn from. I think the motto 'more than a club' sums it up.
teamsaint Posted 28 May, 2009 Posted 28 May, 2009 Well, we have already won the FA Cup. I guess your right, we could still rise further though. but really, who cares? We don't, and neither will anyone else.We will have our own team to support, and our own board to argue on.
