Saint Martini Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 Is anyone bothered with it in the UK? In the Netherlands and Sweden it seems to be a bigger issue then 5 years ago and at last the debates are on European issues and not domestic ones. Saint Martini Posted 27 May, 2009 Author Share Posted 27 May, 2009 I'm voting in Sweden for the first time ever and I'm a bit frustrated. They don't really have parties that fit my Dutch profile, why the hell can't i vote for a Dutch party? (or rather a European party representing the EU and not a national representative for a European parliament) Its a European election, shouldn't I be able to vote for any party running in the elections.... Mole Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 UKIP or BNP F*ck Europe. UKIP are the most likely to win MEP's out of the two, but that Nigel Farage is a bit of a pillock. Nick Griffin on the other hand seems a good bloke to me. As the Americans would put it "the sort of guy you'd want to have a beer with".

RedAndWhite91 Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 This will be the first time I am able to vote, I actually got a bit excited when the poll card came in the post. Hurrah! But yes, it's important people exercise their right to vote, I intend to.

Whilst the freedom of association is a key part of democracy, so i would not say they should be banned, i would sincerely hope the people of Britain are intelligent enough to see what ignorant, regressive, divisive parties and the people behind them are, please do not let these people anywhere near any power

I see your point, but then that party would have to find candidates to stand in every region of every country across the EU - which would be a nightmare. They'd then have to try and campaign in every EU country, which they couldn't afford to do (well, with the possible exception of Silvio Berlesconi's party). The best bet is to look at the Dutch party you tend to support, find out which group they sit in in the Euro Parliament, and find the Swedish party that also sits in that group. They way you know their MEPs will be working together.

Its a shame this new pan-European party called the Newropeans (although at the moment I think they're just up for election in France, Germany and the Netherlands) are not up for election. They're politically very close to the party I usually vote for and they're more European. But I guess I'll have to look at the EP Groups. But let me ask you this, why should there be different national candidate lists if the parties are "european"? The argument against that is that some nations wouldn't get represented but why would this be the case? If we did vote European then for instantce the PES or EPP-ED would be forced to work more closely together in campaining and create mixed candidate lists. Would be much better then the current system in my opinion.

I certainly think that more should be made of the groupings, and the public should be much more aware of what, say, the ALDE and EPP stand for and debate in the European Parliament. However, whether it is best to take away the link to national parties I am not so sure. There could be an argument that says that would remove the EU Parliament from having any direct links to the people - as they would be entirely their own structure. It would certainly be a big step. Also, there is no set method of voting on MEPs as far as I'm aware - different countries vote differently. So that would also need to be sorted. Mole Posted 28 May, 2009 Share Posted 28 May, 2009 hes on a wind-up The bit about NG being the sort of guy you'd want to have a beer with was tongue in cheek granted, but you can rest assured i'm not on a wind-up apart from that.
