saintbletch Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Drumaville Consortium? Radio 5 just announced that Sunderland FC is changing hands and a US owner is taking control from the Irish based Drumaville Consortium. I wonder if they might be looking for another red and white thing to chuck money at?

Gordon Mockles Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 (edited) One of the best ever footballers was Irish RIP George Best But let's hope they're better role models than a philandering, woman beating, talent wasting alcoholic! It may seem harsh but it annoys me when so many people praise Best when he did so much wrong. Does kicking a ball well & loving to drink & party forgive you for so many wrong doings?! Maybe my moral compass is different. Never the less, may he rest in peace. :smt059 [Disclaimer: I wasn't implying Ladysaint was overly praising Best, just so many make him out to be some angel when he had a very chequered history. Now, back on track....oh no! Still fighting about grammer and punctuation!] Edited 27 May, 2009 by Gordon Mockles
krissyboy31 Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I've just logged on for the first time since yesterday lunchtime. Can anybody tell me if there is actually any useful information in these 394 posts? Or is it just the usual pedantry, insults and sarcasm? Just read the first post. The rest is just the usual pedantry, insults and sarcasm. You forgot to mention the damned good English grammar lesson.
ottery st mary Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I thought Niall Quinn owned Sunderland with a few of his Irish mates. I think if Quinn came south it would be to buy Pompey. Here comes the Mighty Quinn......Heard that from The Mann on another Fred

saintbletch Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I thought Niall Quinn owned Sunderland with a few of his Irish mates. I think if Quinn came south it would be to buy Pompey. 5Live said that a US owner is to assume complete control so I assume he had some interest already. Quinn thanked all of his "Irish mates" for helping to get the club where it is now but said that the US investor would help them kick on (paraphrasing). I wonder if the consortium or at least a couple of members might be looking to get back into football? Here are the names of the members... Niall Quinn has 1180 shares and is currently Chairman of Sunderland A.F.C. - The former Irish international striker was a fan's favourite during his spell at Sunderland. In 2002 he donated the proceeds of his testimonial match to charities in both Sunderland and Ireland. Quinn often expressed his affinity for the club, and in 2006 reports began to circulate that Quinn had spoken to Sunderland chairman Bob Murray with regards to buying out Murray's shares in the club. On 3 July a successful offer for the club was announced, with Quinn becoming club chairman immediately, pending the successful purchase of 90% of the club's shares. Charlie Chawke has 1180 shares - Publican, and owner of the Charlie Chawke Group of pubs. In October 2003 Chawke was shot in the leg during an armed robbery of one of his pubs.[2]. Louis Fitzgerald has 1180 shares - Owner of the Louis Fitzgerald Group of 24 pubs with an estimated wealth of £86m [3]. The Dublin publican supremo added another asset to his licensed property portfolio, by snapping up The Arlington Hotel on Bachelors Walk near O'Connell Street in Dublin 1 in an off-market deal believed to be worth €37 million. Jack Tierney has 1180 shares - Property developer and owner of Faxhill Homes. Paddy Kelly has 2360 shares Paddy is a Property developer and owner of Kelland Homes, Rockbriar and Markland Holdings with an estimated wealth of £80m. Pat Beirne has 738 shares - Managing director of plastic company Mergon LTD. John Hays has 1180 shares and is currently Vice Chairman of Sunderland A.F.C. - Owner of Sunderland-based travel company Hays Travel, Hays is the only Sunderland-born member of the consortium. Hays has been investigated by numerous watchdog's during his involvement in the consortium[citation needed]. Patsy Byrne has 1180 shares - Property developer and owner of Byrne Bros (Formwork) Ltd, that was founded by Patsy and Johnny Byrne in 1969, and is one of the leading UK Concrete Frame contractors.

The9 Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 More to the point, why are they still governed by the Welsh FA, virtually every red card and suspension is overturned. If they play in our league, they should play by our rules. Two completely different points, but this has become an issue recently. Although its hardly "virtually every" there is a decided tendency for lenience. Just for the record, it's mainly in Cardiff City's favour too (Darren Purse red card overturned allowing hm to play in FA Cup Final and no fine or caution for coin-throwing when an official was injured, when Newport got a £3000 fine for the same offence). I can't think of a decision that's favoured Swansea either.

I can't think of a decision that's favoured Swansea either. Until this season, Swansea haven't really been big enough in recent years for the FAW to give a toss about them. Basically, they're scared that Cardiff (and now Swansea) will just join the FA as full members rather than have the associate member status they currently have - I presume there are tangible benefits to being a member of the FA ahead of the FAW.

Basically, they're scared that Cardiff (and now Swansea) will just join the FA as full members rather than have the associate member status they currently have - I presume there are tangible benefits to being a member of the FA ahead of the FAW. I'm pretty sure that as their second biggest club for the last 60-odd years the FAW are more than aware of the existence of Swansea City. I don't really think the decision is the FAW or the clubs' to make, as if the FL required all clubs to be full members of the FA the "welsh" clubs wouldn't have a leg to stand on. It would change the historically localised structure of footballing disciplinary procedures - but then why should professional football's disciplinary procedures be the same as grass roots/amateur ones anyway ? Might also have an impact on the whole 2012 Olympic debate and the Home nations, but only in a politically-loaded debate. Annoyingly the pro/am split mentioned doesn't tally with my beliefs on refereeing, that all levels should play using the same laws of the game and specifically keeping technology out of decision-making, but that's yet another layer of random tangents probably best suited to a completely different thread. Have we been taken over yet ?

Window Cleaner Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I wonder how much billionaire Ellis Short is paying to buy them out...? Bet they make a really handsome profit, think they paid about 15 million a few years back.Shows it can be done but you have to be bold and not arse about with second rate managers, players and ideas.
sotonist Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I thought Niall Quinn owned Sunderland with a few of his Irish mates. I think if Quinn came south it would be to buy Pompey. Wrong Quinn, surely.
ottery st mary Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Is that a Travelling Community thing? When The Quinn travelling community pitch up in Southampton..They will be allocated a hard standing by the council...By sum law etc....This will be at Staplewood under the big baloon. Peripheral eye test for free...Go Woody.....Council having purchased The stadium, Staplewood and Jackson Farm( overspill)...No worries my Grandad was from Eire so no offence travelling Quinn family and other hangers on..
saintbletch Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 I wonder how much billionaire Ellis Short is paying to buy them out...? That's the boy. I think he already owned 30% so looks like he acquired the rest. Also lots of links to Jersey and property here. The Consortium is based in Jersey and many of its members are in property. Wonder if Mr. Wilde knows any of them? Bet they make a really handsome profit, think they paid about 15 million a few years back.Shows it can be done but you have to be bold and not arse about with second rate managers, players and ideas. Think the factor that made this work for them was Quinn. He brought together the money and having a football man controlling the club certainly helped. That said I'm not sure surviving on the last day of the season having been through the road crash of Roy Keane's managership is a case study in how to do it. But I do take your point that they weren't shy in thrusting the cash at Keane. And I guess that we also don't know that they came out of it with a profit.

Window Cleaner Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Like Sbragia, Davenport, Cisse, Tainio, McCartney, Gordon, Richardson, Healy and others for huge fees? Well done Sunderland for being the second worst team ever to stay up after Hull, despite spending about 70 million quid. But the whole point is that (as far as I remember) they were in the CCC when Quinn et al took over and then they did it in style to get to the promised land, ie the Premier League where, no matter how mediocre you may be, there's still money to be made. Appointing Keane was inspired, although it all went tits up afterwards, the whole point is getting to the Premier, then you can sell the club for a handsome return, unless you've got a crap stadium and no fans like Pompey.Once you're there and have had a brush with relegation then that's the time to cash in and not wait too late.

Master Bates Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Apparantley on BBC South news this morning Fry said today could be a pivotal day in the clubs history. Just so people don't get the wrong idea, you didn't actually get to see him say it, just the reporter quoting him. Whilst on the BBC, I'm thinking of getting them done by trading standards for false advertisement. BBC2 should currently be showing "Return to Oz", but instead is showing tennis, and it's not even female tennis!

He owns an eyesore of a property between Red Houses & La Moye He was rumoured to be one of MW's targets, but it appeared to fall pretty flat
AwaySaint1 Posted 27 May, 2009 Posted 27 May, 2009 Don't you 'pick the rumours off the bones' rather than t'other way around? (if you're borrowing from the analogy that I believe you to be, Sire) Not if its an Irish rumour to be sure.
