"Ones that got away" eleven

Nope, the yanks wanted something about £2 million for DeMarcus Beasley, we didn't think he was worth it and to be fair, that was maybe right, he didn't do anything at Man City and hasn't impressed that much at Rangers.

We offered £2M for Beasley. PSV offered £2M. And Champions League football.

He chose them! Believe that!?

Chill out. Football club signs some rubbish players and may have also passed up on some other players. Gee whizz.

It's such a pity we signed useless f*ckers like Marsden, Beattie, Svennson and Neimi.

PS - there was not a meeting where Southampton football club had to decide between signing Didier Drogba or Brett Ormerod there and then.

Im not saying there was, it was in reference to comments that Drogba would have been a poor signing whilst at a similar time we signed Ormerod for similar money, given where the two poor players have gone since, has to be judged as a poor decision

Also it what way and how was Niemi useless? He was one of THE top keepers in the Prem at the time?

I think it was Bitterne Park.

It was Bitterne Park, my brother played against him for his school (who were national champions) and he wasnt very "standout" at 15/16 (unlike Franny eg), which is apparently why Saints didnt take him and the Skates did!

Malbranque, Fletcher, Saha... De Pedro? Andy Reid.

Locally, in my time, Brian Stock (who was a year above me in school) and Brian Howard, who I played with at local level football for a time. Damn Howard, his left foot was slightly better than mine!

has to be Graham Roberts for me, we have rarely produced good defenders not sure how he got through the net

although to be fair he was a late developer , playing for Sky Blues mens team in early 70's in Southampton Sunday League , i think he was about 15 then ?

Phillips was a left back i believe and didn't make the grade.

Soo he then left to become prem top goal scorer a few times, good move for the academy me thinks

....some players are played in a wrong position. Like Frannie Benali (who didn't get away) but played left winger as as a schoolboy (and scored goals)

but was converted to become one of the legendary left backs.

yes I heard that story, too

-perhaps Mr.Lowe's judgment wasn't that good on ANYthing ..?

There, I changed a glaring typo for you

(but in fairness perhaps you should have added "to do with the playing side" but then even that is debatable!)

Weston Park after missing out at Saints and Bournemouth he ended up at Dorchester. Transferred to Weymouth for £3,000 and then to Spurs for £30,000 Saints missed him several times.

As we all know he went on to play for Chelsea and Glasgow Rangers. Hard as nails...Graham will admit he was not very good at all at the old gambling malarkey.

Thanks - with some tenuous links there probably is enough to make a team, although it seems a bit light in defense and some are playing (way) out of position.

1) Kevin Pressman

2) Kevin Phillips

3) Graham Roberts

4) Dennis Wise (great centre-half)

5) Wade Elliott

6) Brian Howard

7) Darren Anderton

8 ) Paul Gascoigne

9) Scott McDonald

10) Paul Rideout

11) Steve Guppy

Subs

===

Jamie Cureton

Sam Vokes

Bobby Robson

Brian Stock

"Made in Southampton"

Not sure if Cureton and Eadie are correct though so I have missed them out for now. Same with Gary Mabbutt.

Feel free to improve the team :-)

We have rarely produced good defenders that was why in the past it was so good to watch us at home, games with scores like 9-3, 5-5,6-1,6-3 were seen at the Dell

problem was we took some hidings away

Gazza had a trial here but ended up in goal to make up the numbers, hence never got through.

Thats simply not true at all, he was invited down but always wanted to go to Newcastle, we would have taken him otherwise, in fact i don't know if he ever actuqally came down?

The goalie story is Shearer at Newcastle.

Ian Rush up front

Don't tell me, let me guess - Ian Rush was a local lad but got his scouse accent from his parents.....or did he genuinely have a trial and got rejected as a youth?

No genuine fact Ian Rush was not taken on by saints as by all accounts he couldnt head a ball, the rest is history.

I seem to remember Jody Craddock being a boyhood saints fan who was brought up locally? Started his career at Christchurch in Wessex League.
Great - a defender. Vokes back on the bench and out goes "Made in Southampton" (sorry).

Remember, Skacel and Delgado would be whinged about as "great lost world beaters" to this day if we never got round to signing them.

Having seen them play for us I'm still inclined to think that we should have done much better with them.

Paul Rideout played nearly 90 times for the first team! Scott McDonald also made 2 sub appearances.

The point being, we passed on him as a youngster and had to pay a fee for him, when he did eventually sign. Shearer could feasibly get in the Newcastle "ones that got away" team for the same reason.

Read an interview with Gareth Southgate recently when he mentioned being on Saints books same time as Shearer when he was a youngster but was released at a young age before ending up at Palace.

David Moyes was interviewed by Lowe for the managers job once but wanted to (like any manager would) to bring his backroom coaching staff with him and Lowe insisted on keeping Stuart Gray as coach :-(

Too bloody right...I played against him at schoold for Redbridge v Weston Park and he was the toughest player I have ever faced.

Battered and bruised us!

Rideout definitely qualifies. McDonald is slightly "iffy" - depends on whether or not you consider only two sub appearances as "not getting a sniff". Southgate, though, is a must to bolster the defense. Pressman is the only keeper suggested so he'll have to do for now....

I think I'd swap Phillips and Anderton though. I know KP was a full back for us but ended up one of the Premier League's most prolific strikers. DA played quite a few games for England as right wing-back, so he should be at No.2.

I thought Ben Thatcher was a Saints fan in his youth?

As a family relation (distant) i can confirm that yes he was/is a Saints fan.

As the family folklore goes Ben wasn't the most amused when Hoddle quit Saints and took over Spurs when Ben was playing there, he told Hoddle that he was a Saints fan and jokingly (although he did mean it) called Hoddle a Judas although, he didnt find it funny and they never got on. When Ben was sold to Leicester he was highly critical of Hoddle in the press.

And of course it happened to be a coincidence that it was playing against Pompey that Ben was involved in that infamous tackle on Pedro Mendes. Dont know what all the fuss was about looked like a fair shoulder barge to me....................(joke. no excuse. thug.)
