Dicko Posted 25 May, 2009 Share Posted 25 May, 2009 Good bets to do a Leeds & Southampton? According to various reports today, they are £100M in debt, the 5th highest payers in the Premier League, and none of their players have relegation clauses in their contracts
Gully Posted 25 May, 2009 Share Posted 25 May, 2009 Ashley has to be the most incompetant owner the Premiership's ever had. Even considering the money he's pumped in.

Andy_Porter Posted 25 May, 2009 Share Posted 25 May, 2009 Ashley has to be the most incompetant owner the Premiership's ever had. Even considering the money he's pumped in. Why? Easy to blame Ashley but it's clearly not his fault. Appointing Keegan and then not backing him was his only real mistake.
Arizona Posted 25 May, 2009 Share Posted 25 May, 2009 Why? Easy to blame Ashley but it's clearly not his fault. Appointing Keegan and then not backing him was his only real mistake. And appointing Kinnear. And Shearer.
Andy_Porter Posted 25 May, 2009 Share Posted 25 May, 2009 Kinnear had them midtable before his heart problems. I don't think anyone could have saved them when Shearer was appointed so it's probably a bit harsh to say that's a bad appointment. The only mistake there would probably be not appointing someone new as soon as Kinnear fell ill.

sambosa757 Posted 25 May, 2009 Share Posted 25 May, 2009 Why? Easy to blame Ashley but it's clearly not his fault. Appointing Keegan and then not backing him was his only real mistake. How about hiring Dennis Wise in the first place? He had no experience in that sort of position and had history with Newcastle fans from his playing days also. Then to back his judgement over a manager of Kevin Keegan's standing cant really see the logic there either. How about commissioning the sales of Milner, N'Zogbia and Given (amongst others last seasn also) and replacing them with players costing a fraction of what they sold them for? How about guzzling pints of lager wearing a Newcastle shirt on TV amongst the fans in an area of the Emirates where no alcohol was apparently allowed? How about leaving Chris Hughton and Colin Calderwood to their own devices for 2 months waiting for Joe Kinnear to recover from open heart surgery in a display of such arrogance tha defies belief and then only acting on it when the majority of their players treat the club as much of a joke as he has. I could go on.

I think there are managers who could have saved Newcastle, but Shearer had no experience at all and was clearly the wrong appointment IMO. He had absolutely no effect at all on the creativity, defending and motivation of the squad. Redknapp had an almost instant impact at Spuds, likewise Big Sam at Blackburn. To a lesser extent Hart at Pompey, Hiddink at Chelski and even Pearson for us have turned teams around pretty quickly, without spening cash. Surely his biggest mistake is not running the business properly - allowing debts of this size, no doubt on fixed interest rates, and the players' wages to be so high - this is incompetence of a high order and the mark of a poor businessman. OldNick Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 A man who lost £1m on a spin of a roulette wheel does not repect money or the people who are truly suffering.I find it distasteful although Im a capitilist at heart. If he had chosen Saints wit a fraction of that money he would be in the PL. Too many players who are fancty Dans and not enough proper grafters to go with the little skill there.Too many old players on high money, i doubt they will get much for their squad. That's almost word for word what you've posted about Pompey before. Isn't it about time you got a new stock response regarding any Prem team you're having a pop at. Isn't it about time you got a new stock response regarding any Prem team you're having a pop at. have you come back just to prove what i said about you.Only here when you are safe and have a bit of swagger.I expect you are about 5' nothing tall with the typical small man syndrome. As for that post it has nothing to do with Pompey and in fact very little to liken them to it. They are truly a big club and the PL are poorer without them, im sure Wigan of the South would not be missed should you go down
chrisobee Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 The decline of Newcastle has not been sudden, it's been building over a few seasons. The various reasons such as appointing the wrong Managers, signing players who were past their best etc; In the final analysis Newcastle were a very, very poor team. The fact that they could not even finish ahead of Hull who lost to Man U reserves just about sums it up. I doubt if any of the "Big 4 " clubs will be looking too closely at who they can sign as I'm not sure many if any of their players would even get on their subs benches. So as Nickh pointed out it's very unlikely they'll be able to generate significant cash from selling players, the few good ones they had are already gone. They were the smart ones! GenevaSaint Posted 26 May, 2009 Share Posted 26 May, 2009 I think they've got the figures wrong somewhere, I'm sure that Ashley cleared the debt. Their turnover was 100m but their wage bill was 70m. Scary figure in the news today..... DANNY GUTHRIE £40,000 — will do well in Championship. 40K for Guthrie, that's fecking scary

GenevaSaint Posted 27 May, 2009 Share Posted 27 May, 2009 is that his transfer fee? lol And this just proves the fact that football is mad. Guthrie was an ok player, but 40k per week is madness!!!!
