City breaks

Have you been to Florence before? It's nice.

I think you can fly to Bologna and jump on a train; Ponta Veccio, The Domo (well worth the climb but don't forget your camera), and lots more lovely buildings that I can't remeber the names of.

You can see the original (so they say) statue of David, and walk the same streets that Michaelangelo (sp) walked when a young student of the arts.

When we went I fully expected to eat the finest pizzas in the world. Wrong, search out places where the locals eat, this is usually the best advice anyway imho.

Milan is quite boring really and shockingly expensive (well, for drinking anyway).

Rome or Florence are much better bets in Italy.

Barcelona. Munich. Berlin. Lisbon. Krakow. All good.

Never been to Brussels. Good beer guaranteed though!

Agree about Milan, somehow you feel like you're just on the sidelines there not really experiencing the city.

Florence I like as well, its a beautiful city and even though its touristy it has kept its charm.

Rome on the other hand I hate with a passion. Its such a shame there so many nice buildings in such a disorganized hell-hole.

Berlin is nice but better in November/December when there's Xmas stuff. Barcelona is nice too but you have to be lucky with the weather (or at least not unlucky). I was there for a week a few years ago and it rained the whole time. Not a very nice holiday.

Tis ok, if your going to eat, go to the latin quarter. With moulin Rouge.

Eat carefully in the Latin Quarter as it is also home to hoards of crappy tourist traps, but there are plenty of decent places where the natives eat just off the main thoroughfares. Great central location to stay though.

We are probably going over for a few days whilst back in England in August...might try the Bastille area to stay for a change.

Have you considered Ljubljana?

My GF and me went there back in march as part of a mini backpacking trip all round Slovenia, and it's a really beautiful city. A mate of mine went there a few years ago and he described it as "Prague but without the dickheads" which pretty much sums it up. There are plenty of cheapish places to stay in the old town by the river and there's loads of other stuff to do as well.

Easyjet do some pretty cheap flights there, we went from Stansted, and the main airport is only a 25min bus ride from the city centre.

Well worth investigating.

Lisbon is a great little capital city - quick to get to, small enough to walk around, and has some great neighbouring resorts in Sintra and Estoril if you want to get out of the city for a trip.

Dublin.... Most expensive drinks in the world !!! (not a fact, just opinion)

I went there a few months ago! It is the most expensive place I have ever been. Lovely place, dont get me wrong. But my god you will need a lot of money to actually go and experence it. All tourist bits (except the open top bus) are extortionate!

£6 a pint average. And thats just the local pubs. Wait til you get to Temple bar!!

Agreed, lovely area but absolutely and completely over priced.

Have a look at Lithuania and Vilnius, cool place and cheap, I'm heading to Lisbon in Aug to see a friend of mine, she loves it out there. I have always found Barcelona to be a right dump, Toulouse in France is a very good shout, lovely city if you can ignore the thousands of students.

I had a long weekend in Pyongyang (North Korea) a couple of weekends ago. Expensive but v interesting and the most beautiful woman I have ever seen was our guide for 4 days. Bit far from the UK mind.

Nearer to home, you can't really go wrong with Barcelona. I'd also agree with Florence being a good choice. Dubrovnik is nice as well. If you can afford it Reykjavik also ace and loads to see around there.

Great little city, and like you say not yet ruined by the groups of stag and hen parties. Really nice to sit outside one of the cafes by the three bridges and relax.

Santa Cruz in Tenerife is a favourite spot of mine. Some good nightlife, great restaurants and nice hotels. The Hotel Taburiente comes highly recommended, and is a short walk from all the cool bars and whatnot. Tenerife is ace. You can spend your daytime in the South, in the sunshine and then bus it back to the north in the evening where it is invariably cooler and where you aren't faced with tens of thousands of Brits.

I didn't think much of Santa Cruz. A concrete sprawl is an apt description. The famous market is interesting, but i have to say the site of puppies in cages appalled me. Go further north into the Anaga mountains and it's a nice drive. Purto De La Cruz is probably the best resort (if a little too full of geriatrics). I won 500 euros at the casino there which was nice.

Not really, that's the prices you pay at airports over there, the national average is £6.48.

..or bars in areas tourists would go, a bit like London I suppose. I'd never pay that much, in fact I usually pay less than the second amount. It is stupidly expensive though.

How about Bruges?

Lace, chocolates, diamonds, pretty canals, lovely buildings, nice food. I don't know about how good the beer is though :)

I like Barcelona too - good transport system, Gaudi cathedral and Parc Geul (sp?). Good cable car ride up / down to the beach. Picasso museum.

I'd go back to both of those cities again.

Amsterdam?

I was a bit disappointed with Amsterdam when we went last year. I thought it was a bit tacky.

Probably OK for a lads' weekend but perhaps not really good to take your better half to.

Although the area around Prinsengracht and Keizergracht is very pretty and there are some good restaurants there.

But the bit from the station up to the Palace square is quite trashy IMO.

It's just like Blackpool only the locals speak better English.
