.... "invest" in a football club purely for business reasons?

I just can't see how anyone can make any sort of return on their capital. The best you can hope for is to break even or, more likely, make a level of loss that isn't going to wipe you out completely.

We fans, who seem to expect private investors as well as the likes of Barclays and Aviva to subsidise our sporting preferences to the tune of tens of millions, are a fickle lot. Don't spend recklessly on players and stadiums and we complain of under-investment, lack of vision etc. Do the opposite and we cry gross financial mismanagement.

So why bother?

Especially for a team that you don't support?

Presumably, in return for being parted from their money these (ahem) "investors" get to enjoy a bit of power and are seen to be "important people" as they ponce about in the directors' box? Is that it?

Genuine question.

Buy Saints today for 9m. Spend 20m and get to the Premiership. Sell for close to 100m. Make 71m profit (potentially :D)
Yeah....but apart from that? :-)

Problem with that line of reasoning is you have the mega-money at QPR, Majedski + parachute payment at Reading, big money at Ipswich, investors at Derby (plus parachutes) and Coventry, new money coming in to Cardiff, Mandaric at Leicester plus whoever comes down including potentially a well-funded 'Boro all with the same strategy.

Only 3 teams a year can get promoted!

Could be wrong, but (when we're playing reasonable well) don't we have bigger gates than any of them, except maybe Boro?

And we are sat a league below them and need to get out of that first!!!!

Because Saints are a good punt. We can be snapped up for very little and are the biggest club south of Birmingham (if you discout London).

Money alone won't get you to the promised land (although it does help enormously). Finding that sweet spot of a good manager to build up a team over a few seasons, tweaking it here and there but essentialy having continuity through out the club are just as important

100% agree. We need to find another Nigel Pearson.

I don't think you have had bigger gates than Derby for some time, perhaps since the Prem days - and neither do Boro, even in the good times. The thing is with these investors is that they probably draw some sort of financial renumeration from the club for their expertise or as a consultancy fee -and its an opportunity for them to network with other influential & wealthy businesspeople. Maybe thats part of the draw. The board at Derby have done an ok job in stabilising the finances, but they get a bad press from some fans so its true that they can't really win.

Is it possible to find another Ted Bates? Played well and then Managed us well, before Big Mac took over. Only name that could fit in with that scenario that I can think of is the imcomparable MLT. However I can't see him as Manager material. Would be too perfect for that to be more than idle thoughts.

Killer? Great attitude and has watched a fair bit of football over the past 4 years.

To be honest I wouldn't want MLT as Manager,it could destroy the strong link between him and the fans ? Most Saints fans worship the guy for what he's done, and I'd hate for that to be destroyed if things went badly wrong with him looking after the team.I'm not sure Matt has the necessary qualities to do the job,and to be honest I don't think he would want the job anyway (IMO).

The guy is a legend, let's just keep it like that without ruining things ! :smt045

a very good question and other than rapid promotions and then offer to buy , or laundering money i cannot think of a good business reason unless you could turn the Hospitality Suites into a nightclub and Dell Bar into a popular pub

if you buy a club on the cheap that has potentially 30k plus crowds if you get to the premierhip then there is a possibility of making money. Mandric sold PFC for about £50m. I know he spent money buying the club and then money on players and their wages, but he came out all right thank you very much.

If the new owner buys Saints for £8m then spends say £15m to get us into the Premiership then the SKY money alone at £60m a season could quickly pay off the money spent by the owner. Of course the club would also be worth a lot more than £8m in hte premiership.

You can therefore make money, but, and its a big but, you need to buy at the right price, bring he right people into the club and get the side up to the top flight pretty quickly. There are certainly no guarentees of that, but as Peterborough and countless others have shown money talks.
