Give it to Ron Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 IF we do get a buyer and have a club going forward is Coppell now an option seeing he has resigned? New challenge not far to move house, I wonder if Surmans move will now happen.

' arry R. has given his son Jamie a two-day a week coaching job at Spu*s (whilst he is studying for his coaching badges). HR said that Tim (Sherwood) and Les (Ferdinand ) were doing " a great job " but sooner or later ........ ....." a lower league club would surely give them a chance ......" Sounds like HR is planning their exit and a step up for Jamie - but what will happen to Tim and Les ???
DT Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 They'll get fewer brown envelopes. Personally I always felt sherwood was a cretin but at least sir les can string a sentence together. No chance either will come to us.
lee_saint Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 (edited) Wouldn't suprise me with Coppell if he did come to us, he won't be getting a Premiership job, whether he'll drop down to League One, I dunno, but he is a man who likes a challenge and we might just be the right option for him....we'll see. Fan The Flames Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 I think Coppell is the perfect choice, he has a track record at this level and with small budgets. With Southampton he has a blank canvass to set up what he wants and a club that is bigger than Reading and Palace so should be able to survive more easily in the top flight. He has mentioned his win ratio recently and said it would have been better but for the cash strapped clubs he has worked in, is this an indication that he doesn't want that again or does moving a struggling on still tick his boxes. If it does any new buyer should do everything possible to get him.
obelisk Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Some strange selections at Reading recently indicated to me that he was ready to depart for pastures new. The Royals need some fresh blood and Saints could do a lot worse than someone like Coppell. Whether he still has bad memories of May 1st 1976 I'm not too sure though.

And as someone else said Coppell is a miserable bastard.

Palace the first time round was a success taking them into the old Div 1 and to a cup final. Brighton as I recall were top of their division when he quit for Reading. Can't remember if it was Peter Taylor or Adams who replaced him and took the praise for their promotion. To be fair to the bloke - though I'm not a great admirer - his record at such clubs has in the past been good but then so was Burley's.
stevegrant Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Coppell will retire, I reckon. I know he's always given off a bit of a dour impression, but the last couple of years he's looked particularly cheesed off - almost as if he's lost the appetite for management.
Graffito Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 I'd welcome Coppell as manager. Good track record. Can spot a bargain. Plays the game the right way. Hope we're fortunate enough to get him.
Smirking_Saint Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 I think we could do worse then coppell but as badger said. We need somebody young and hungry and looking to move on. Saints would be a great club for a young manager for the long term, good set up, great fans, large fan base. And realistically not at the correct level. We shall see.

Prefer Boothroyd or Cotterill personally as both are quite young, are cvery capable and have points to prove.
Special K Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Didn't Coppell say he was going to retire from football management? I think he made a promise to friends and family he would (i recall seeing an interview with him when he said this). If he's involved again i suspect it will be letting his sparkling personality loose on an already oversubscribed panel of ex-footballers who parade themselves as pundits (MLT aside of course).
dubai_phil Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Away from Reading he has never really been that successful. Having taken them into the PL he probably has a large salary which League 1 is unlikely to be able to afford But experienced and a sensible "safe" appointment, so would be surprised if he is not at least "in the frame"
BotleySaint Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 I would love it. But get real - we've got no money and he wouldn't come cheap.

There's no chance of him joining us.
(not THE) Kevin Moore Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 has anyone mentioned Mark Robins for the gig? I haven't tracked his progress but it wasn't long ago that he was getting rave reviews and considering he's at rotherham who don't have a pot to p!ss in that is no mean feat. Could be the sort of good, young manager we need.

Toadhall Saint Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Wasn't there a picture on here of Mark Fry and someone that looked like Coppell?

krissyboy31 Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Coppell was there for the Burnley game, scouting for the playoffs. Didn't do him much good though!
SuperMikey Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Really don't think we'd have any chance of attracting Coppell here. I think he'll either retire (the most likely option in my opinion) or go to a Prem club, could see him at Newcastle if they stay up. But really there is very little chance he'd come here. I'd prefer to appoint someone with a bit more youth and drive on his side, someone like Tisdale or perhaps Ince, seeing as he has experience at L1 level. Names which have been bandied about a lot, but realistic candidates imo.

There have been pictures of Fry on the pitch with a bald geezer behind him, and there may have been pictures of Fry in the stand with Coppell in the same frame watching the (Burnley) match (perhaps looking at Surman or Burnley or both). Since Fry has no interest or influence in the next SFC manager I am not sure what you were driving at?
Toadhall Saint Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Its a link - it appeared (to me) that they were in conversation thats all I was getting at. So I was right there was a picture of the pair of them. Thanks for answering the question.
CWD Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Would be a brilliant appointment, i suppose it depends on his desire for a challenge though - there are loads of other PL or CCC clubs in far better positions than us that would snap him up immediately
kpturner Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 Maybe we should just worry about if there will be a football club next season and then fret about the manager afterwards. The bottom line is that there will be no managerial changes or appointments until a) a buyer completes the deal or b) we are liquidated......actually come to think of it b) won't result in an appointment either!

Agreed, the reason he resigned was that he was no longer enjoying managment. Earlier in the season I remember him saying how if managers are not enjoying football then they should resign, which presumably applies now.

Mole Posted 13 May, 2009 Posted 13 May, 2009 I'd sooner we went for a manager with hunger, than a manager who's been around the block. Also i'd like to see a manager with Saints links. One of the old guard that defended our top flight status when we had players who were proud of the club. Jim Magilton is a relaistic option.

scotty Posted 14 May, 2009 Posted 14 May, 2009 ^do I hear the chomping of a few words being eaten now Coppells said he wants to return to management in a few months? I'd love to see him here, but it seems unlikely. That said, maybe the timing......and Readings not too far.......any other straws I can clutch at?

Lets B Avenue Posted 14 May, 2009 Posted 14 May, 2009 Coppell must be the mysterious 3rd bidder. thats why he's resigned.
Keithinoz Posted 15 May, 2009 Posted 15 May, 2009 What about Giggsy, as Player/ Manager, or even Player/ Manager /Owner? He's nearing the end of his career, probably doesn't have to worry about money, & still fit/ fast/ smart enough to avoid lower league cloggers. Many of Fergie's former players appear to do well managing in the lower leagues - Ince, Keane, Robson, Maclaren. They're all sh*t in the Premier league though. But We won't have to worry about that for a while.
