Woggy

I don't doubt that he's a nice guy, but on this thread we so far have:

- Lowe sacked him out of spite.

- He left in protest

Classic examples of re-writing history.

From what I know he was part of the many cut backs made, did spite play a part in it ? who knows, however, Woggy I am told, was considering retirement the following season so would have thought it, in the big scheme of things, reasonable for him to have seen the season out and had a bit of a do due to time served etc...were his employers aware of his intentions...again who knows ? Woggy was told frequently by LC to consider himself n gardening leave and he'll be back soon, that soon has turnt into a considerable period of time.

It would be good for nostalgia reasons to have such servants back at the club and if it in any way contributes to better feeling around the place including the return of fans then it can only be a good thing

I hear he has or will be asked to return!

Any Thoughts

Of course !

He's put his life blood into the club, and even as " boot boy" ...I bet he's a great encouragement to everyone. What else is he going to do ?

...sit in front of TV with a six-pack and watch second rate Euro matches.?

NO WAY ! ..get him back and let him stay till he want to quit!

Those are my thoughts also.

Arguementative!! We have people saying that we are going to have a man in his 60's to return to a job. It in turn will either mean somebody losing their job to facilitate him or an increase in our staff costs. We have just been relegated to L1 ,i was trying to point out that having a kit man return whose job must have been filled is not a priority in my opinion.Everyu penny under new ownership I suspect will be tight as the enthusisam level appears really low. Therefore a shortterm return of a kitman who was not on the radar until he left is not high on my priorities especially if it means that funds will be channelled from elsewhere to make way for him.

If the club can afford extra staff all well and good but is it really that necessary, or a fan appeasement, sounds very similar to MW's arrival ominously IMO

Nick - everyone who knew anything about the club recognised him as a 'face'. He was a cheery fellow and it was a statement of Lowes return that he got axed. So it's a statement of the new owners that the club is refinding its roots and re appointing him! I'm not quite sure what his age has to do with anything?? He knows the club inside out and always has time for a chirpy word with the fans.... This club has to get back to being about the family club that TB tried and succeeded to create. That is where we found success - RL took us down the PLC route with everyone being a customer and the like and look where that has got us!!Get Woggy back in now.... I was hoping he would lay our kit out for us on THursday!!!

Club in financial difficulties. Look at which roles can be cut. Decide the kit/utility man can be one of them. If you look at it financially, he's a wage in a column on a spreadsheet somewhere. If you look at it emotionally, he's in his 60's will probably be less affected by it than Derek the groundsman who has a young family.

Eitherway the budget has to be cut as we have to avoid administration. It's irrelevant how little his salary is, those pesky footballers are on fixed term contracts with big exit penalties. The office staff are on a months notice.

Every little helps.

Can't argue with any of that. Interesting also that so many seem to know him, his whereabouts, and/or his movements, yet nobody has actually asked him how he came to leave the club and whether or not he would consider returning.

A very nice guy he may be, but appears to me that most are speculating at best at the situation surrounding his circumstances.

What on earth are you talking about. Woggy was laid off, he didn't go of his own accord. End of story.

That maybe the case Wade, my son was recently laid off, for the second time in his short working life. It happens to lots of people and it is unfortunate, but as you can see just reading the thread - there are different interpretations as to how he was laid off. It may well have been an amicable arrangement - who knows - perhaps we should speculate a little more. Perhaps it's not the 'End of Story' eh?

It wasn't amicable, Woggy wanted to stay on and was prepared to take a big reduction in pay to carry on doing the job.

Lowe's line was that it was one of many cutbacks, but the feeling from Woggy amongst others was that it was a vindictive act. That part of the decision will never be proved one way or the other, but what is clear is that Woggy didn't want to leave.

Woggy was more than the kitman, he was also the gofer who would do many things for the players and was well liked and respected by the pros, young and old alike. He was a familiar face at SMS and Staplewood who would take the pressure off the players by undertaking any number of menial tasks and generally helping around the place. IMHO his spirit and personality was a plus side when considering the morale of the dressing room.

Based on a conversation held with him he would return, thought it common knowledge how he came to leave the club...for the avoidance of doubt, he did not leave the club of his own accord(not the Honda type)

If it were you and Woggy in conversation - I have no reason to doubt your record of events. I was only agreeing with AP in that various accounts of his leaving were posted here - most of them speculative at best.

Whilst unwelcome, being laid off is part and parcel of most forms of employment and it is often those that are nearing retirement age that are approached first.

I have no beef whatsoever with Woggy and would welcome his return. Tis the often quoted 'everybody knows' or 'it's common knowledge' post that annoy, when it is anything but the case, i.e. more speculation.

For all I know, Woggy may have been happily retired with his feet up and just enjoying (if that's the right word after this season) watching Saints. But as you have first hand knowledge of his disposition I stand corrected, and as I said before, would welcome him back.

What for and by who?

We are currently in admin with no visible means of support, why would they be asking old kitmen who are receiving a pension to return? Doesn't make sense. Once you retire that's it,you can't go back full time as far as I know.

Sounds like bollax tbh.

IMO Woggy leaving the club was symbolic of Lowe's ability to see the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Woggy was part of the spirit in the club and when you start to disassemble that, the rest will evaporate. I really believe that Woggy would have brought something to the changing room mentality - he was probably one of the first people the players would see turning up for a home game and he almost certainly was close to the players. I also truly believe that players would be more inclined to put more effort in on the pitch knowing they're effectively playing to put food on their friends dinner plate (etc.).

It's simple - bring Woggy back!

I often would pop down Staplewood and see Woggy doing his kits with the other two ladies that worked in the office next to him, Listening to the friendly banter between them would be superb, For example Michael Svensson would walk in asking for a red top and woggy would start moaning that the ladies had moved it before you would see them shouting at each other and smiling at the sametime, Only then would Svensson just snatch it and run as Woggy would scream at him for snatching it.

Thats the feel good factor you saw everywhere with the likes of Woggy, Strachan, Ruddock, Le Tiss and even Flowers was about as these people was the butt of so much when I often saw training.

Now it's boring as the players are like robots to go with the coaching staff.

He has been serving me my V.A.T's working the bar in the exec lounge at Eastleigh this season. Top bloke Woggy and always goes out of his way to make everything run smoothly. Regular guests up there have been Franny, Claus, Doddsy & Howells who all sing his praises. Quite a few ex-saint's staff milling around!!

This was last week at Hughesey's testimonial.

Always a nice atmosphere at The Silverlake and a real spirit I remember we used to have when I worked at the Dell with Exit 2 and the rest of the mob. Shame Saturday went a bit pear shaped for the Spitfires, but they took it well and now concentrating on going one better next season.

We have been missing that sort of atmosphere at SMS the last few years, think we all know why.

For anyone who didn't see them, here are all my pictures from the testimonial, good day all round it was:

wake up. forget about all this admin crap. in 2 weeks time le tiss will be chairman we will ave new owners and will be looking to rebuild the club.

this is all fact

even the saints aid is a waste of time, well not a waste of time as all the money will go to a good cause, but this will not be SFC as they will not need it.

Im sorry i adore MLT as a person and player , but there is no way he is cut out to be chairman IMO. If he does bacome so I will back him but what experience does he have of doing that.

As for the original part of the thread seeing the picture above tells me he is not able to be a kit man humping the stuff around again.

If the club becomes cash rich then employ him again maybe. but as kit man??

If it means somebody losing a job to re-employ him that also has moral implications as well.

It is great saying take the bloke on but at who's cost? Would we be happy to see somebody lose their job for him to return?

Life is not always so easy as lets bring him back.

Here's one for you. In my opinion Le Tissier will never be chairman of SFC nor a board member. It won't happen.

Thanks Farmer glad to know that he is well. Last night I was watching this on the Sky Sports site:

...and couldn't quite work out why he was wearing the shirt (had some wishful moments too..!), but your excellent photo montage has solved that mystery for me as well. Thanks.
