NickG Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Radio Solent are just doing this, Merrington has given it to DMG. My candidates would be Size / Perry - Perry was better in second half of season with Size, Size has a few dodgy games. James - think he really came good in 2nd half of season, delivery best in squad, start of season not so hot and still learning his positional sense. Gillett - good but out too long. So, would agree with Merrington and go for DMG
new_zealand_saint Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 David McGoldrick, no matter how much people slate him, he scores goals, and has scored ALOT more than anyone else has in our team
RobM Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 David McGoldrick, no matter how much people slate him, he scores goals, and has scored ALOT more than anyone else has in our team Seconded. Nobody else has gotten as many goals and if he weren't in the team, I don't see where the same level of goals would have come from?
egreog Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 If DMG is second choice then it just shows how lame the team other that KD has been........a season best forgotten in so many aspects!
ulstersaint Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 David McGoldrick, no matter how much people slate him, he scores goals, and has scored ALOT more than anyone else has in our team Is this the same David McGoldrick who could not score from the penalty spot versus Burnley when he had the opportunity to take a free kick at goal with a stationery ball from 12 yards in his own time and without any defenders allowed to challenge him ..... and missed with a quite pathetic weak shot much too close to the keeper?

Are you forgetting his effort against Wolves? That was even worse.
Gorgiesaint Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Jack Cork - our best outfield player in the first half of the season in the shambles that was JP's management. It is also a sad indictment of the rest of the players that he left in Dec/Jan and no-one has stepped up to the mark.
Nineteen Canteen Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Jack Cork - our best outfield player in the first half of the season in the shambles that was JP's management. It is also a sad indictment of the rest of the players that he left in Dec/Jan and no-one has stepped up to the mark. I think its sad that since Jermaine Wright left for Blackpool no one has stepped up to his mark. He could have walked player of the season this year.
Saintjersey Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 McGoldrick has scored 13 goals this season in all competitions with 3 being penalties (shocked he actually scored any) in 45 appearances. He has only scored 11 in the league. That is s***. Gillet, Size, Perry, James even Cork as some people have mentioned should get it ahead of McGoldrick.
Saintjersey Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 (edited) Hasn't he played 46 games? So is 13 goals good? Because I think it's fairly ****. I never understood when 20 goals in the CCC became an amazing thing to achieve. Premiership clubs come bidding for such players, paying silly fees, but what are they expecting? More goals in the prem? It's a harder league. We used to see decent strikers getting up to 35 in this league. More games, poor defending, more chances. DMG has displayed the worst attitude I've seen of any player in a saints shirt this season. Yes, his attitude improved in the last few months, but he cost us a lot of points and was frankly embarassing. He's missed a lot of chances and still can't kick a ball cleanly. but it's not ability that makes me dislike him. it's purely the appalling attitude and lack of respect for the club he's shown so often. if he improves, good luck to him, but he'll have to improve a hell of a lot to be half as good as he thinks he is. Haha just read your comment, completely agree as my post shows above. Edited 3 May, 2009 by Saintjersey

Whilst TBH I find it difficult to find many positives as far as player performances go, I have to stand up a bit for DMG. He was identified by Lowe and Poortvliet as the answer to our central striker position, which he quite patently wasn`t. This was not his fault. It was not his fault that he was continuosly picked by the manager.Did people expect him to say "I am not playing well so drop me"? When he was played in his "proper" position he performed better. He can score goals and he has some good close control. IF we could keep him and we get the right manager then he could be quite an asset in L1.

Take James for instance he is not naturally a right back but gets on and does the job. Whilst McGoldrick thinks he is some sort of God and waltz's around not giving a s***. If he actually looked to put effort in whilst he was playing alone up front, instead of acting like a sulky immature little boy then maybe people (me included) would thank him for scoring some goals.

But don`t you think that he was made to feel "untouchable" by other people?
Saintjersey Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 But don`t you think that he was made to feel "untouchable" by other people? Tbh I don't really care who (if anybody) has made him this way, whether it's his parents, Lowe, Pootaloo, Wotte or anyone else. To me he just seems like an arrogant person and I couldn't bare picturing his smug face collecting the player season award after his lack of effort.
sidthesquid Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Lloyd James - a good young lad who'd never played a first team game before this season, played the whole season where he'd never played before & took some shocking stick, but never hid, kept working away & has finally won many of his critics (at least those who go and watch, anyway) over. Gillett, not far behind, but missed too many games
Nineteen Canteen Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 But don`t you think that he was made to feel "untouchable" by other people? Yes, undoubtedly Lowe has meddled with his head and told him to spend half the game walking around the pitch with his hands on his hips and take penalities with all the gusto of a shy and backward schoolgirl. Lowe has in fact indoctrinated the whole squad in a very evil way by paying inflated salaries and telling them to stroll around and at least try and make it look good and don't worry about the abuse from the cheap seats. WE SHALL DESTROY THIS CLUB AND I WILL HAVE MY DAY OF JUDGEMENT HA HA HA. Join me you little players and lets make them all pay! (just trying to get into you head). You Stupidoldgit it seems Lowe has messed with your cognitive functions.

S4INT Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Gillett for meeeee. One of the players I really hope stays next season...

Don't blame him for them not being here. He is a half decent player and would be a loss if he does go.
Micky Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Player of the Season. SKP for me - scored the winner again today - back to back promotions, still doing it at 35 years of age, what more can you ask for. Ohhhh you meant Saints player.... my how times have changed....

You Stupidoldgit it seems Lowe has messed with your cognitive functions. I can see from your post that you agree with my early season statements that Rupert should NOT have given himself the role of Director of Football. He should NOT have been taking all the training/coaching and Definitely NOT carrying out the pre game and half time team talks. AND stayed out of the dugout. Now we can see why Mighty David Mac and others went off the rails. As to his meddling with transfers/loans etc...You as a failed film director/failed art student could have showed Rupes the way home.
Saint_Jonny Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 DMG for me. You cant give it to any of our centrebacks, we were relegated FFS. They might be "good" but come on...
SaintRobbie Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Nathan Dyer. Agreed. Only other player who has made me smile this season.
NickG Posted 3 May, 2009 Author Posted 3 May, 2009 so far looks 1) DMG 2) James clear of 3) Gillett/Size/perry
eelpie Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Nathan Dyer. Actually you are right. Followed by Rasiak and John. You utter fool, Lowe.
Minsk Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Well, the way I would look at this is who will I feel most p!ssed off about if he is sold in the close season. I won't feel too upset when Saga, Skacel, Rasiak, Lallana, Surman, etc go, as I expect them to move on. Then there are those out of contract players who I doubt will have them renewed, such as: Euell, John, BWP, etc. I will be quite upset however if DMG, Gillett and James are not here next year. And, of those, I think there is the most chance of James going. Still, I am undecided between those 3. Definitely not: Forecast, Pulis, Gasmi, or any of the other waste of wages players we have signed this season!!!!
SaintDonkey Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Gillett and James for giving me hope for the future.
ladysaint Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Anyone else heard the rumour that Kelvin is going to Leicester.
LeBenali Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Anyone else heard the rumour that Kelvin is going to Leicester. Only from what I heard during the commentary on Solent earlier. As player of the year behind Kelvin, it has to be Perry. Thought he would really struggle playing at this level all season but has proved me wrong-as reliable as Size but without the mistakes. Reads the game very well and for a small CB wins a vast majority of his headers. For me has a had a fantastic season.
Amesbury Saint Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Anyone else heard the rumour that Kelvin is going to Leicester. there was something on here a couple of days ago
saintsforlife7 Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 606:Cue the posts saying davis is possibly the most over-rated saints player of all time, he makes bog standard saves and flaps at crosses, he's rated because we have no0one else to rate. Also, must agree with the Perry post, reads the game so so well, and i've seen him get us out of a rather dodgy situation more than once this season! Shame he's not a few inches taller though
bungle Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 DMG and Gillett are probably a tie, but on the basis McGoldrick has played all season then I would go for him. I think he's turning into a fantastic player.
Hopkins Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 DMG. By a mile. Then Gillet and James. Anyone slating DMG attitude is clueless. Just because he is not Brett Ormerod and doesn't run around like a headless chicken all game does not mean he has an attitude problem. Anybody tried playing upfront on your own? I don't see Berbatov/Henry/Van Nistlerooy etc running around like mugs while playing upfront. I believe it was James Beattie who said Strachan taught him that as a Striker, not moving can be just as effective way losing a marker than running around like a ****. DMG, has all his career (anyone who has watched him in youth teams and reserve games will note this) been the sort of player that likes to drop off and get involved, not chase everything down. Now that he's been playing off a target man (a ****ing ****e one at that) he's been able to become a bit more effective and has worked his socks off ontop of that. It's not easy playing upfront on your own. Its probably not that easy playing upfront with Jason Euell either, but without DMG and his goals (however few you think that might be) we'd be alot worse off than Charlton. If he stays, he'll be the best forward in League one by a mile.
Bad Wolf Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 I'd have to give it to Perry. His experience has been vital
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 3 May, 2009 Posted 3 May, 2009 Lloyd James all the way for me, undoubtedly most improved player of the season and I think he put in 100% every minute of every game, which is a hell of a lot more than can be said for a lot of our players.
NorthamSteve Posted 4 May, 2009 Posted 4 May, 2009 I would say that, after Kelvin, it stops being 'Player of the Season' and becomes 'Most Improved Player' IMO. To that end it's definitely a toss up between DMG and 'My Lloyd' - as his father calls him. DMG sometimes seems a bit put-out by being on the park, Lloyd always gave his all and his last couple of months have been excellent. So, Lloyd James get my vote. - Good Work mate! He'll be an asset in Div 3 (in old money) one to keep hold of IMO.
Andy_Porter Posted 4 May, 2009 Posted 4 May, 2009 Anyone else heard the rumour that Kelvin is going to Leicester. Someone who's a friend of one of Kelvins family told me this last week.

That may be what people think he's like, but in actual fact he's not got that bad an attitude. I think people think that because he doesn't smile much, and is easy to use as a scapegoat.
Andy_Porter Posted 4 May, 2009 Posted 4 May, 2009 Lloyd James all the way for me' date=' undoubtedly most improved player of the season and I think he put in 100% every minute of every game, which is a hell of a lot more than can be said for a lot of our players.[/quote'] I'd go for Lloydy as well, very much improved and he seems to care. Really hope we can keep hold of him and Gillett next season they both work their socks off and never give up. That's the sort of spirit we used to have at Southampton and the spirit we need to get back. I'd probably go as far as making Gillett the club captain next season.

And I'm a big lad and can hold the ball up. He's not 6'3" and 220 pounds, so it's not going to be easy for him.
