Pancake Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 (edited) The 1976 FA Cup Final took place on 1 May 1976 at Wembley Stadium. It was contested between Manchester United and Southampton. United had finished third in the First Division that season, and were strong favourites, while unfancied Southampton had finished sixth in the Second Division. In one of the biggest shocks in the history of the final, Southampton won 1–0 through an 83rd-minute goal from Bobby Stokes.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_FA_Cup_Final Saints 2 - Palace 0 : Semi Final The Winning Goal: BBC: When Saints Shocked Man Utd: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/7783151.stm Collecting The Cup: Team Tour Round City: Edited 1 May, 2009 by Pancake
OldNick Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Thanks for reviviing those fantastic memories Pancake. What a time to be a saints fan
ladysaint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Maybe we should all go to Forest reminiscing of the 1976 cup final one of our greatest moments. The memories of the day the trip up there, the trip home with everyone on the motorway bridges are all coming flooding back and have cheered me up no end. Thank you Pancake.
ladysaint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I was in love with Jim McCalliog at that time, I wonder what he looks like now.

badgerx16 Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Looking through the the 'then and now' on the BBC link - how many of today's players, having won the FA Cup, will end up installing double glazing, or as a service assistant in a garage ?
Arizona Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 1st May is always a bit of a bitter-sweet day. 15 years since we lost Ayrton Senna too.
northam soul Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I still have the programme which has been signed by both teams. Must be worth at least £8.50 by now
J Bizzle Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I still have the programme which has been signed by both teams. Must be worth at least £8.50 by now I have 15 of them, my grandad thought they would be worth a fair bit in the future, so when he saw the UTD fans throwing them on the floor, he picked a load up. They're worth between £40 and £50 atm.
saints_is_the_south Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 How i'd have loved to been around back then to experience that day, something that I'm highly unlikely to experience in my life. Great videos & that picture is now my desktop background at work, cheers!
Legod Third Coming Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 1st May is always a bit of a bitter-sweet day. 15 years since we lost Ayrton Senna too. Off topic but I don't know if you saw the incredible programme on Jim Clark recently on the BBC?? It was really only after his death and the campaigning of Jackie Stewart that we're lucky poor Ayrton and Roland Ratzenberger are among rare fatalities these days. An incredible driver, Senna - they're making a film about his life (http://www.autocar.co.uk).
Toomer Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I still have my replica shirt that I wore, not a chance that it will fit me now has been the case for many a year.
Cricketphilly Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I was in love with Jim McCalliog at that time, I wonder what he looks like now. Saw him a few years ago, gone grey like the best of us but changed little LS.
Windmill Arm 2 Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I find it slightly embarrassing that 1976 is the only achievement this club has to be really proud of. And now look at us.
Thorpe-le-Saint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I have a copy of that programme. My Grandad was using his head back then and knew one day his grandson would want it!
Barry the Badger Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I find it slightly embarrassing that 1976 is the only achievement this club has to be really proud of. And now look at us. Rubbish. We have plenty to be proud of. We were in the top flight for nearly 30 years with a 15'000 seater stadium. That makes me bloody proud. Also, most clubs will never even get to a cup final let alone win one. Head up.
badgerx16 Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Also, most clubs will never even get to a cup final let alone win one. We've been to 4 FA Cup finals, a League Cup Final, a ZDS final, and had several seasons in europe.:)
PhilB Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Watching that goal go in still gives me a tingley feeling and brings a tear to my eye. I just thank my parents I was there
70's Mike Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 like Toomer i still have my shirt, which also does not fit , thing seems to have shrunk. also got my top hat made at Fords, no wonder the factory is struggling, but best of all i have some great memories of that weekend from passing driving test on Friday to Channon's testomonial on the monday night. i wonder how much that weekend would cost now
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Thanks Pancake - You can't buy that feeling! COYR!
John B Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 The best day of my life Went with a Man U fan - Brilliant
WealdSaint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 only 9 at the time. remember riding around on my brothers arms as we watched the match. remember the display in the corner shop by my grans in St Cross Winchester. remember going to school in woking on the Monday and getting beaten up by the Man U fans claiming Stokes was offside. Hope there is a club to take my 10 & 7 yr old boys to next season

saint lard Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Great day,i long for days like that to return. The summer of '76 is the best i have ever known. Thanks for helping me to recall those memories,if just a tad painful given the current predicament we find ourselves in. Onwards and upwards.
Toomer Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Well I think he was offside but who cares Not when the ball was played
Mole Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Am i right in saying that was the last time the queen presented the trophy?
John B Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Not when the ball was played I did see someshots a few years ago where Stokes was clearly offside before McCalliog passed it but the normal TV shots are unclear. I was always convinced we were going to win especially as we were playing well in the latter stages of the game Even though we were in Div 2 at time I still feel that team was better than the 2003 Cup Final team . In fact I dont think apart from Niemmi I would have in a combined team
Snopper Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Am i right in saying that was the last time the queen presented the trophy? Quite right, Sir. She realised it couldn`t possibly ever get better than that day. I sat next to Alan Pascoe (the runner) who confessed to being a P****y fan.
Northampton Saint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Fantastic memories. I still have my programme and ticket - but no signatures! My Dad made me hide my scarf on the way out in case things got nasty! Let's hope it won't be too long before we are celebrating again - it seems a bit overdue!
Leicestersaint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 I was there in a group of about 20 of us right behidn the goal that Bobby scored in. What a day - at least the pathetic small-minded useless businessmen that have brought us to the present sorry pass cannot take these memories away from us.

Let's hope it won't be too long before we are celebrating again - it seems a bit overdue! Unfortunately I cannot see that happening as any decent player we produce will be off to the Premiership.

Yes I was there too watched the ball go into the back of the net so slowly. Nobody about me thought we would let in goal and neither did the team.
Mick8 Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 Horrendous plug...... http://www.mickchannon.tv/extra.php
Blanco Saint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 This thread should be a sticky imo. Makes me feel a huge sense of pride about our club. Well worth reminding the spirit of belief. Wish i was there.
