Legod Third Coming Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Splendid article by Robert Kitson on why our demise should be a wake up call for the Premiership. Don't normally do leftie papers but found it in the company kitchen and well worth a read. Might even be worth buying so long as they don't still prop up union funds, etc...
The Incongruous Monk Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2009/apr/28/southampton-championship-relegation-administration I think there's a thread on this somewhere already.
Nineteen Canteen Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Splendid article by Robert Kitson on why our demise should be a wake up call for the Premiership. Don't normally do leftie papers but found it in the company kitchen and well worth a read. Might even be worth buying so long as they don't still prop up union funds, etc... I would need to buy a copy of Razzle first so they could discreetly put the Guardian inside so no one can see me and pretend I'm married to Rita Chakrabati or whatever her leftness is called. Lets defend our right to protest and shout and swear and throw things at nasty policeman and then put it on You tube when we get trouchoened across our legs. The Guardian, Daily Mail and Express are IMO are an absolute no no. The Sun and Mirror are OK for a holiday read The Telegraph only just manages to separate itself from the Guardian but for reasons on the other end of the scale. The Star isn't a newspaper so is excluded. Which leaves the Times and the Independent. The latter has dreadful sports coverage and more concerned with 'global issues' so that leaves us with the Times by default. Personally, I still lament the loss of the Today.
Nineteen Canteen Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 What papers should one read? I don't mind the guardian, but I hate the daily mail. Well, not hate, I'm depressed and saddened by its existence. Is there any middle ground? Adrian I read the Times not because I like it but IMO it's the least offensive, embarrassing, do goody/righteous or hated of them all. This country does not produce a worthy newspaper for the typical person who resorts to buying the women's daily the Daily Mail.

Well, not hate, I'm depressed and saddened by its existence. Is there any middle ground? For news - read The FT For sport - read http://www.sportlinglife.com For fun - read The Sun For suicidal fears of jonny foreigner - read The Daily Mail If your reading age is 7 - try The Express To appear intellectual but really just want the Tories back - The Telegraph If you have limited space on the train - The Times And if you want to cosy up to Gordon and aren't clever enough to read the Grauniad - The Mirror I have never tried the Independent for fear it marks me out in public as someone with no opinion on anything... Personally, I only ever read one paper - The Racing Post (although I miss The Sportling Life)!
saintfully Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Yawn, you're showing your age.. no-one under 40 buys newspapers anymore - theres a new thing called the Interweb. Oh hang on.... I would need to buy a copy of Razzle first so they could discreetly put the Guardian inside so no one can see me and pretend I'm married to Rita Chakrabati or whatever her leftness is called. SaintDonkey Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 The Guardian online is one of the best football news sites going - far better than (and imitated by) most of the papers who have more football coverage in the printed papers. Just compare the front page stories in the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/footballand the Sun http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sport/football/. The Sun doesn't have a single highlighted story about about a club outside the Premiership, in fact you have to scroll down half a mile to find a story about a team outside the 'big four'. The Guardian has it's articles about the big four and the rest of the Premiership, but also about the coach situation at Bayern Munich, Joe Royle at Oldham, Championship play offs, Italian, Spanish and French football, what's happening in Mexico. Plus of course 2 articles about Saints. If you want to read about Man Ure, the Arse and Chelski go with the tabloids. If you want to read about football go with the Guardian. All IMHO of course and in no way influenced by the fact I work opposite the Guardian's old offices and drink in the same pub as half their sports desk

I trust, for example, you have given them the inside story on whom we don't want to return to the club...
SaintDonkey Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Why are we not using this to our advantage? I trust, for example, you have given them the inside story on whom we don't want to return to the club... Personally I credit myself with the fact that they're producing the most (and the most supportive) stories about Southampton of all the national press at the moment. Sadly they moved offices a couple of months back so they don't drink in the same pub any more so I can't get any inside gen But believe me they've heard me rant about Lowe enough times!
The Cat Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 I buy the Guardian. Of all the papers it seems to me to be the only one with a conscience, and it's design is superb. It clearly has it's faults, but as the old maxim goes: don't believe everything you read in the papers. It's paper sports coverage as a whole isn't the best (that'd be Times for football and Telegraph for cricket) but it's investigative sports journalism is second to none, David Conn is especially good, and it's website superb.
Fan The Flames Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Personally, I still lament the loss of the Today. What for the tory loving union bashing or for the colourful pictures and lack of big words.
Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Again, not a leftie, but I've got to say I've been very impressed with the Guardian recently, an excellent array of articles. Maybe I should read the Guardian but vote Tory...

Maybe I should read the Guardian but vote Tory... I think you'll find the Guardian is very critical of the current government ATM. And, for anyone genuinely interested in current affairs, they run good articles from the breadth of the political spectrum. They've done some great exposes recently (can't do the accent on the last e) including the one on big business 'avoiding' the payment of taxes and, of course, of the police behaviour at the G20 protests.
VectisSaint Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 The Sun and Mirror are OK for a holiday read People read The Sun? I thought it was just for looking at pictures.

You should try the Gulf News or Khaleej Times occassionally You'll be signing up for subscrition to the Grauniad before you know it! (Mind you 7Days is ok for a freebie to read the whingeing expats woes when taking the morning constitutional_
Leslie Charteris Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Meanwhile, back to the article... It's a good read and hopefully a reminder to others just how fragile top flight football existence is (Pompey grave dancers). I think I liked the bit about Jordan the best (not the country, dubai phil). :-)

docker-p Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Brilliant article ( from a worthy newspaper) Again it alludes to missing funds, what do they know?
Doctoroncall Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 Brilliant article ( from a worthy newspaper) Again it alludes to missing funds, what do they know? Time for David Conn to get on the case!
gonzo Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 So, are they saying that the money disappeared whilst Lowe was in charge, or between his two stints as chairman?
docker-p Posted 28 April, 2009 Posted 28 April, 2009 First article yesterday said investigation into £40m hole in accounts, todays said something like 'things were being investigated'. Nobody could nick £40m in just 12 months, more likely over the last 12 years or so is my guess.
