Papa Shango Posted 27 April, 2009 Share Posted 27 April, 2009 AFC Wimbledon are effectively the old Wimbledon so I don't see it would be any different for us. Similarly for Aldershot. Exactly. How people can say they will start supporting Eastleigh, Dover, Arsenal or another completely different team is beyond me.
SET Posted 27 April, 2009 Share Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes but it would only work if it was started and organised by someone who had a little bit of money and know-how. It'd be pointless if we were playing in a field in the lowest possible pub type league, but if we had a little stadium nearby like AFC Wimbledon are using and we had a Chairman who could at least afford to buy one or two players on the cheap then it might work. But let's not even think about it yet, Southampton FC as we know it will not die. You don't have a chairman with a little bit of money, the club is owned 1 member 1 vote, all money is generated by the owners(fans) and re-invested back into the club. No one rich person underwrites AFC Wimbledon, and no one person underwrites FC United, both are progressing towards the football league very nicely. Well that's fair enough, and congratulations to them. You'd still need one person (or two, or three) with the legal know-how and funds to at least get the ball rolling professionally. Both previous clubs were funded in the first instance from donations, those who donated became founding members. In the case of FC united over 4000 people donated over £120k

sidthesquid Posted 27 April, 2009 Share Posted 27 April, 2009 Sadly no. I have no connection to Southampton as a city, live beyond the dark side, my lad begs me not to make him go, my father is barely up to it anymore & the last few years have felt more like punishment than pleasure, so I know it would slip away. I don't watch much football on the TV, but I follow all the southern teams' results. Also, my lad is fifteen & I said we'll stop going when he starts playing on a Saturday & he's probably going to be good enough for Sussex/Wessex league standard so I'll support whoever he plays for. But until that black day happens, I will at the start of the queue to renew my season ticket
SaintDonkey Posted 27 April, 2009 Share Posted 27 April, 2009 If Southampton Football Club dies it will be at least partially due to the actions (and inactions) of it's fans. It's going to be hard for me to then back a 'fans' club knowing that some of those fans may have been responsible for the death of SFC. Too many on here advocating the fans club now are the same who advocated the boycott that has contributed to this situation. Too many are acting as apologists for the pitch invasion on Saturday that could be the final nail in SFCs coffin. So no I could not support a team founded by the murderers of the club I love. A little bit dramatic considering nobody knows who is/could be involved in this venture! Would you back it if all founding members had Season Tickets this season? Given the bitterness that seems to infest the club & its supporters any supporter-led new club would dissolve into infighting & recrimination within weeks

Thought I'd just give my gut response rather than a reasoned argument, and when it comes to supporting a team it's all about the visceral reactions isn't it?
