Colinjb Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 (edited) A simple yes or no would suffice. I understand its an emotive issue and many viewpoints will want to be stated, but there are other threads for that, the purpose of this one is to understand what proportion of the fanbase would back it. For me: Yes Running total: Yes: 23 No: 9 Ambivalent: 6 Conditional*: 1 *Applies only if you feel we must be playing at St Mary's or hold a similar tie to the existing/potentially expiring entity Edited 27 April, 2009 by Colinjb
View From The Top Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 This is a very difficult subject as I've always supported Southampton FC and I don't think I could ever have a passion for anything else. I'd just end up following England and taking my nipper to see Arsenal.
alpine_saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Head tells me yes. Heart tells me it would never be the same. :-(
eurosaint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes, I would follow them. Would I make a 3 hour round trip to watch them play in a pub league - no !
Cabrone Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 I'd be sympathetic and interested in how they do but no, I wouldn't be a fan. Its Saints or bust.
Yeovil Saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Absolutely Yes. If Southampton Leisure Holdings plc and Southampton Football Club Ltd ceased to exist, then any team founded as Southampton would be our Saints. We might have to start off again in the Conference South, Southern League or below, but the spirit and the soul of the club will remain. An "AFC Southampton" would retain the history and tradition of our club and if it comes to that, no matter which league they play in, I will support them.
Andyb1 Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Head tells me yes. Heart tells me it would never be the same. :-( That might be nice, perhaps you wouldnt moan as much. Perhaps...
hamster Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 What numbers would be needed to play home games at St Mary's Colin? I think that would be the clincher for many as it is our 'home'.
Colinjb Posted 27 April, 2009 Author Posted 27 April, 2009 What numbers would be needed to play home games at St Mary's Colin? I think that would be the clincher for many as it is our 'home'. Good question but I have no idea. As I said this thread is here to get some raw stats, nothing more. I can add a 'conditional' option as well.

If the council owned the stadium I think it would make a massive difference to it being seen as part of our community. They could even re-name it.

Dibden Purlieu Saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Head tells me yes. Heart tells me it would never be the same. :-( Agree with this. It is effectively supporting another team...
sandwichsaint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Not really interested TBH; good luck to anyone who started it, I'd look out for their results and prob buy a shirt too, but I wouldn't make a 300 mile round trip to watch a non-league side. I've got my exit strategy nicey covered; the mighty Dover have just achieved their second back-to-back promotion in front of average home crowds of well over a 1,000 in the Ryman South and are back in the Conference South. Decent ground, good crowds, brilliant manager (Hesentaler, HCDAJFU), some funding; I expect them to go well next year and either gain or come very near to another promotion. All hypothetical of course, all indications are that Saints will be taken over this week and in a perverse sort of way I'm quite looking forward to L1; even considering my first-ever ST if the new owners come up with the right package of rescue/manager/pricing!
alpine_saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 That might be nice, perhaps you wouldnt moan as much. Perhaps... People dont moan and argue about things they simply dont care about.
Essruu Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes. An FCUM type offshoot would be a great option if either SFC folds or RL comes back as part of one of the buyouts.
Papa Shango Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes of course. I would like to hope the majority of fans would back it. What else are you going to do on a Saturday?
alpine_saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes. An FCUM type offshoot would be a great option if either SFC folds or RL comes back as part of one of the buyouts. You are really chuffed that you had an excuse to write "FCUM", arent you ?
OfnPanad Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes, if Southampton FC folded I'd support another team playing for my home city. Would have to be as similar to Saints as possible though or it'd be a "different team" as someone said above.
Wazza Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 I lived in Kingston-upon-thames for a while and used to live across the road from Kingstons ground which is shared by AFC Wimbledon. Used to go and watch the Home-games and the atmosphere was amazing - thousands of fans cramming in to keep there club alive. If it is anything like that then absolutley YES
La BoIS Saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 AFC Wimbledon are effectively the old Wimbledon so I don't see it would be any different for us. Similarly for Aldershot. Assuming we actually played in Southampton and there was as little infighting as possible then I would back it.
Ponty Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Nah, not if the players, stadium and name were all gone too. Having not lived in Soton for over 5 years, I'd probably take the opportunity to support someone who was actually good, for a change.
Toadhall Saint Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Head tells me yes. Heart tells me it would never be the same. :-( Think thats the same for me.
Dan Johnson Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 nope I'd start following Eastleigh - I would look out for the AFC Southampton results, I might even attend a few games if they got good... but I wouldnt surport them
Saint Fan CaM Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 On balance I think I would find something else to occupy my time, but it would be a difficult one.
Micky Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 I think it might potentially get 2k or 3k fans, but there'll no doubt be rival clubs set up as people fail to agree on it, or someone they don't like is involved in the running of one etc. Would need decent coordination. If done right, and saints was gone, then they could get 10k, even in the conference, which would make us favourites for a couple of promotions. but if saints still exist, even if it's under lowe, many will attend there instead, including me. Being in London, if saints went bust and the new team organisation was the mess I fear it might be, I'd be tempted to start watching a team around here. Probably fulham as they remind me of us when we were up there, have a good old fashioned ground and had niemi and bridge. Aaaahhhh so thats where some of the money went then - we sold them Baird but told them it was actually Bridgey - damn cunning plan from our Rupert eh...!!!
SaintBobby Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes - if it was the only option. I'd still suport the "official" Southampton FC at St. Mary's if it existed, even if Lowe returned as Chairman.
Gudz Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes, absolutely. Despite living in London now and being able to choose a quick & easy path to a more local club, I'm Southampton born & raised so yes I will support which ever club represents my home town. When I sing "Southampton till I die" on a matchday, i mean it.
The Tango Man Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 YES.We must keep the club alive...my first grandson was born on Saturday and he must know bout this once great little club...
Saintandy666 Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yep, deffo, would attend games and that for sure.
eelpie Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Of course. Southampton till I die. (Whichever League we are in). But not while there is still hope for (a lowe free!) SFC
Arizona Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 As a fan living away from Southampton, there is no way I am going to make a several hundred mile round trip to watch none-league football. I would support them in principle, follow the results etc. and go to a game if I am in the area for other reasons.
70's Mike Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 hard decision but at 55 to old to start standing in cold empty field watching football do that to support my son's playing on Sunday would not do it on Saturdays
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 No, once it's gone it's gone. +1 - Sadly I'd then follow my hometown club.
niceandfriendly Posted 27 April, 2009 Posted 27 April, 2009 Yes but it would only work if it was started and organised by someone who had a little bit of money and know-how. It'd be pointless if we were playing in a field in the lowest possible pub type league, but if we had a little stadium nearby like AFC Wimbledon are using and we had a Chairman who could at least afford to buy one or two players on the cheap then it might work. But let's not even think about it yet, Southampton FC as we know it will not die.
