Psycrow Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 No. 1. Simon Gillett is only 5'4" Seriously? 5'4"??? Were they taking the **** on Radio Hampshire and just saying he was small? I know children taller than that. Not that it makes a difference as long as he's good enough, but its just odd. No. 2. Sky Sports have just said that we've never been beaten at St. Mary's in the League Cup. Is that true? I know its probably only a handfull of games, and Sky tend to blow these kind of stats all out of proportion(For example, I remember Iain Payne being shocked last year that Man City hadn't won a League Cup match since 2004....so the lost 2 matches in 2 years Iain? Shocker!), but interesting all the same.
Andy_Porter Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 1) Simon Gillett is tiny, 5'4" wouldn't suprise me at all. Stumpy! 2) We nearly always end up losing in the first round away so it's not suprising.
Wildgoose Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 He is short, but Wikepedia says 5'6" Not sure if that's accurate
Micky Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Gillett may only be five four - but height (or lack of it) means nothing if you have the skill and ability. Michael Owen is no giant - but in his heyday he was pretty awesome too...

Michael Owen is no giant - but in his heyday he was pretty awesome too... Michael Owen is around 5'8"-5'9", not hugely short. Though as an engine room modfielder height isn't that important.
Micky Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Michael Owen is around 5'8"-5'9", not hugely short. Though as an engine room modfielder height isn't that important. That big - really - always looks a bit of a short ass to me - perhaps he's just got short legs...!!!!
ART Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Simon Gillett is 5ft 6 ". It is a topic that was discussed two seasons ago. Gordon Strachan is the same height.
Andy_Porter Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 And the same height as Dennis Wise in the same sort of position.
camdijk Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 If memory serves, this was our 5th Carling Cup match at SMS and have yet to lose. UTS
saint_ed Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 It is correct that we have never lost at St Mary's in the Carling Cup.
Redondo Saint Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Bally was 5'6"!! Scholes is 5'7" In this position height isn't the main criteria.
saint lard Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 5ft 4ins is not short......please tell me it's not short.
saint_ed Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 5ft 4ins is not short......please tell me it's not short. It is short.
Gis Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Though as an engine room modfielder height isn't that important. and whilst a disadvantage in some situations - Gillet's lack of height must make him almost impossible to tackle or play against to the average Championship 6' 2" athlete.
Saintandy666 Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Which games are these? We have tonights and I remember tranmere 6-1. Thats all that jogs my memory.
Andy_Porter Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Which games are these? We have tonights and I remember tranmere 6-1. Thats all that jogs my memory. Marsden's thirty yarder in the first minute vs Tranmere was awesome.
Saintandy666 Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Marsden's thirty yarder in the first minute vs Tranmere was awesome. Yer, the game had barely started. I remember just being shocked! I think we had only sat down a couple of minutes before.
Window Cleaner Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Simon Gillett is 5ft 6 ". It is a topic that was discussed two seasons ago. Gordon Strachan is the same height. Probably a low centre of gravity then, doesn't fall arse over tit with a puff of wind.Alan Ball measured how high then, don't think Tigana was a giant, Giresse neither.
L1Minus10 Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 If you look on the team photo, Gillett is next to Dyer and he is obviously the taller of the two. So how tall is Dyer ?
Window Cleaner Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 (edited) 5ft 4ins is not short......please tell me it's not short. Don't worry, you can tuck your **** in your socks at 5ft 4 Edit, well if you're called **** from Scunthorpe you sure do earn a lot of stars. Edited 26 August, 2008 by Window Cleaner
miserableoldgit Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 5ft 4ins is not short......please tell me it's not short. It`s not short. It is just right. Anyway height is like age. You are as tall as you feel.
St Landrew Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Whenever I used to go down to Staplewood and see the Reserves, a few seasons back, there would be this little lad bombing about. He seemed to be about a foot shorter than everyone else, and I always thought his height would count against him. I think it has proved to be the case as well, but Simon Gillet has always been a very capable player, but overlooked. His time has come, and it doesn't matter a jot that he's only 4ft 18ins. He plays to his strengths, and they are very strong.
Window Cleaner Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 It`s not short. It is just right. Anyway height is like age. You are as tall as you feel. My sister is 5'4", well at least when she went dancing at the Pier and her 6 inch stilletos got stuck in the planks she was. '
Wildgoose Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 If you look on the team photo, Gillett is next to Dyer and he is obviously the taller of the two. So how tall is Dyer ? Probably had Gillett stood on a box! :-0

Kingsland Codger Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Which games are these? We have tonights and I remember tranmere 6-1. Thats all that jogs my memory. Dexter Blackstock's 'Perfect Hat-Trick' against Colchester A 2-0 victory over you-know-who and a win against Yeovil
Dannyboy_Saint Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Every time i take my little sister to a home cup game we win so maybe thats why we havent lost a league cup game at St Mary's.
Saintandy666 Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Dexter Blackstock's 'Perfect Hat-Trick' against Colchester A 2-0 victory over you-know-who and a win against Yeovil Oh riiiight, I caouldn't remember whether the pompey game was fa or league cup.
Whitey Grandad Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 It's a good thing that none of them has school tomorrow.
saintjinksie Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 He is short, but Wikepedia says 5'6" Not sure if that's accurate ive met him face to chest and he is 5' 4"
miserableoldgit Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Probably had Gillett stood on a box! :-0 Or a handbag.
Matthew Le God Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 5ft 4ins is not short......please tell me it's not short. It's below the average height for a woman in the UK. So yes it is short.
Ashby Saint Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Gillett may only be five four - but height (or lack of it) means nothing if you have the skill and ability. Michael Owen is no giant - but in his heyday he was pretty awesome too... I thought Diego Maradona was about 5' 4" as well.
musesaint Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Sky are wrong Simon Gillet is on loan from the Shires and is 3'10" high ...fact
Pugwash Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Sky Sports also say that we struggled to get a foot hold in the first half.Well if that is struggling then bring on the winning. Do they even watch the games? Sky don't like Saints. That's why they only feed about 15 secoinds of footage to ITV for the Championship. They had exactly the same 15 seconds of footage on Sky's Championship round-up on Monday.
Bensfcno1 Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Simon Gillet........ is only 5ft 4, but hell hit the back of the net and leave you on the floor!
Arizona Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 We beat the Skates at SMS in the Carling Cup. Not really relevant, but worth mentioning at any opportunity.
La BoIS Saint Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Oh riiiight, I caouldn't remember whether the pompey game was fa or league cup. We beat them in both!
NickG Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 We beat the Skates at SMS in the Carling Cup. Not really relevant, but worth mentioning at any opportunity. and again!
southamptonfclegend Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 5ft 4ins is not short......please tell me it's not short. it's not short if your 12
Al de Man Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Home ties at SMS have been, Saints 6-1 Tranmere Saints 2-0 Portsmouth Saints 3-2 Colchester Saints 5-2 Yeovil Saints 2-0 Birmingham It is just one of those non-stats.
Arizona Posted 26 August, 2008 Posted 26 August, 2008 Colchester... now there's a team I'm glad to see the back of. The 4 games of goalkeeper tennis we've had in the last 2 seasons bored me to tears.
sydney_saint Posted 27 August, 2008 Posted 27 August, 2008 I'm 5'4'' so feel an obligation to join in this debate. Many times 'short' players such as Wise, Gillet, Zola just to name a few, put the larger players to shame by actually contesting for the ball. I've seen and played against many players 6ft plus that fall over with a nudge from the little men so I don't think size has much to do with anything
SoccerMom Posted 27 August, 2008 Posted 27 August, 2008 Sky don't like Saints. That's why they only feed about 15 secoinds of footage to ITV for the Championship. They had exactly the same 15 seconds of footage on Sky's Championship round-up on Monday. Well, they just trailed the league Cup coverage on SSN with Lallana's goal. Whoops from the nipper in the living room.

They had exactly the same 15 seconds of footage on Sky's Championship round-up on Monday. Oh behave. Last week (versus Brum) we were the main game on the Championship, and we've got two live games in a row on Sky coming up. I don't know if you've ever actually watched The Championship, but every single club apart from the first game and the "filmed feature" second game gets 15 seconds every single week.
