benjii Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 We are having a St George's day event at work. It is BYO so I have been toying with which ale to take along. I am currently thinking of Newcastle Brown but if anyone has other suggestions I am open to them. Thanks.

Tim Southampton Rover Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 Fish and chips from the chippy, a few cans of dandelion and burdock and sit down and watch a re-run of Germany 1-5 England. Can't beat that!
Bath Saint Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 I'll make sure to get in a nice dish of Khinkali, all washed down with good, Georgian wine. Happy St George's day - patron saint of numerous countries and cities.

norwaysaint Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 Not allowed, the liberal thought police (including the dreaded PC Brigade) have banned me from hanging my tatty George's cross out of the window of my flat That's got nothing to do with being PC, you ****wit. Politically Correct simply means treating people without discrimination. That's got nothing to do with hanging up your flag. It annoys me that something that should be obvious be obvious behaviour is treated like it's ruining our lives. This all comes from a few idiots being told to stop being racist, then reacting to every stupid piece of bureauocracy as if it's part of the same thing. Now people call health and safety issues "PC gone mad", or if some moron makes a stupid rule about celebrating religions, national days or patron saints, it's called "PC gone mad". That's not PC, that's some **** with power doing something stupid. People who repeat that idiotic mantra are simply trying to devalue attempts to stop discrimination by tying it to other, stupid and irrelevant things. Of course you can fly a flag or celebrate a saints day. There's no connection to PC.

Minsk Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 I shall be doing something to celebrate, but not sure what yet. Whatever it is it will be after I have given a special St George's day lesson to my students. By the way, he is also the Patron Saint of Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Beirut, Barcelona, Genoa, Milan and Moscow....to name but a few places (there are many more)... Oh, and of Boy Scouts and syphallis too I believe!!

Minsk Posted 23 April, 2009 Share Posted 23 April, 2009 Saint Patrick wasn`t Irish. He could have even been French. What is your point? Saint Patrick was born in what is now Cumbria, so he was English. He was taken to Ireland at the age of 16 and was forced to work as a slave (on a pig farm). He escaped after 6 years and went to France, where he became a monk. He later returned to Ireland to convert the pagans to Christianity. Here endeth the lesson! I would have thought that was abundantly obvious; there is more to St George's Day than mere Englishness. What was your point?

Ironic isn't it that to create a national identity many people find something they collectively hate - the scots and the welsh hate the english for example. The English on the other hand....hate other english people, or maybe they just hate everyone and have unfocused rage issues. Anyway, all good points but unfortunately Mao was on a wind up - easy mistake to make as someone would have said it and meant it eventually. I've been posting my faggy lefty liberal views on here for about five years, and no-one realised I was taking the ****? That's quite depressing. I realised.
