Where to stay in Barcelona....

Stayed there a few times, and cheapest place I found was Amrey Diagonal (booked through Expedia), which is in the business district and about 4 stops out from the centre. It was walking distance to Sagrida Familia and right by their version of London's 'Gherkin'. Including flights to Gerona, the 3 nights cost us aboiut £120 each on 2 sharing. Nothing wrong with the hotel, it was just where they cater more for business, at weekends it is empty. not much in the immediate area, but the public transport is so good that it isn't a problem.

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Ambassador - very close to a metro station and a short hop from Las Ramblas.

Quite possibly the worst hotel we've ever stayed in!

However, I've just looked on Trip Advisor and it looks like it's been taken over and is now called Hotel Silken Ramblas. It looks like it might have improved a tad but it seems noise from adjacent rooms is still a problem.

But it is a great location. Have a look on Trip Advisor - you get some honest reviews there.

ignore the poster telling you to stay in the business district ... that is madness imo. I'd never advise anyone to stay right on las ramblas but staying out in the business district is simply too far out in my opinion.

I can give you some good ideas of places to go that will be a little off the tourist track if you like.

It is a different option rather than madness! I think it was about 5 mins on the reliable, cheap & IMO safe metro. Have stayed in quite a few places there, and that was the one that was ideal for a weekend with mates. But it is just an option. have stayed in some right holes on and around the Ramblas, and some top places near Miontjuic & Camp Nou, but when I went on a lads weekend, the one in the business district worked best.

The metro shuts down round about 12, so you need to know the bus routes or get a taxi after a night on the lash, mind you, true Barcelonians would only be heading out at that time.

meh ... it's usually back running again by four in the morning or something though so not a problem if you're living like the local party set.
