slickmick Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 Agree totally What about Lallana too? Undecided about Lallana. Needs to play in a big strong team that can protect him in the kind of way Jimmy Case would have. Think he is one player I would like to keep even though he has looked poor this season. mattyd Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 In a normal market, I would say McGoldrick is worth £1,500,000 bare minimum. He's a much more impressive player than Best or Blackstock and both of those were worth around £750,000 I think? If we need the money desperately, then clearly we will probably have to undersell people. However, it's all academic to speculate on transfers really - until we get new owners there will be no activity. With any luck the new owners will have enough clout not to have to sell everyone. Who knows?! I think we will sell because many have let the club down and should be part of a clear out regardless of our finances. The players seem to escape their part in our mess! Whitey Grandad Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 The interesting comparison would be with the values of the squads of the other teams in out league, whatever that is.

ThorpG Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 I think Lallana and Surman would fetch some money - they are both players who can pass a ball and have a good touch but struggle with the 'rough and ready' nature of Championship football. Perversely, in the Premiership where midfielders do get a bit more time on the ball, they may do OK at a lower-half club such as Stoke, Wolves etc... I don't think they are worth more than £1.5m between them and with our parlous finances no doubt we would take any offer, but they may go for more than some people on this website would think. Conversely players like Davis and McGoldrick (who have been about our best players this season in the circumstances) would probably bring in very little. There are plenty of average Championshop strikers who would never cut it in the Premier League, while Davis' track record means he would only go to another Championship club at best, despite being comfortably our best player and the only reason why we still even have a chance of staying up. The rest of the squad really would fetch very little, particularly as a lot of them are out of contract anyway.
haddock22 Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 One of the reasons i having been going this season after 40 years was that bwp was being played. One of if not the worse player saints have ever had and why hes played is beyond belief. To compound all this was learning he was on 7000 a week
ulstersaint Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 if you took the whole squad to Bursledon next sunday morning I reckon by the end you would be happy to leave them there leant up against a bin. Stick Davis on Ebay, the rest can go in the three for a quid box. Agree - only Davis is worth anything. £10.7m? The Fat Controller can't have been watching them this season. A team worth £10.7m would not be second bottom of the division waiting for the trap door to open and the drop to League 1.
OfnPanad Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 I'm looking forward to when we clear the way for a bunch of over 35's..."experience is the answer" will say our new manager.... When we are sinking to the bottom of League 1, we'll play a few 17 yr olds, look good for a few weeks...before collapsing and ending up rel'd again... At least that would be the story with Rupert in charge. God I hope we get a new owner that knows more about football than my gran!!
The9 Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 We got a tribunal 650K for best and 500K for Blackstock, roughly twice what we paid for them. I think, on reflection, that the Deano and Walcott affairs went to Rupert's head, he thought you could sell any old rubbish for silly money, hence the youth policy this season. Give Gobern a couple of games and con some bunch of mugs for 4 million for him must have been the theory of the affair. Rather harsh on Gobern, who looked a class apart for the reserves at the start of the season.
The9 Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 He looked like he was running through waist deep mud all day, never have a I scene a player second to the ball on so many occasions when it was at least 70-30 in his favour to win. His first touch also reminded me of Heskey, sadly his lack of commitment prevents him from matching the sliding tackle second touch! I can't believe we'd get more than a million for him and half of that is based on potential which he's not come close to realising with us. Relatively speaking Blackstock and Best were both better prospects when they left us, and they're hardly setting the world alight. His goal against Palace is about the only shot or pass I've ever seen him hit which didn't bobble or trundle along before it reached its destination, and our persistence with him alone up front for the first 5 months of the season is a large part of the reason we're where we are. Window Cleaner Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 Rather harsh on Gobern, who looked a class apart for the reserves at the start of the season. What was harsh? Could have been any of the young players really. Lowe was looking for another Walcott type deal to get us out of trouble like he always had in the past. It just went tits up because no-one had the quality to fetch 12 million after 20 or so CCC games. Any of them might have been ear marked for the role but the ploy was obvious.Just that the new batch haven't been formed by Georges Prost's special brand of skill that's all. Lyon have a lad called Karim Benzema, probably worth 30 million at 21. The master's magic is still working, but elsewhere.
Window Cleaner Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 See, told you Swansea would bullsh*t over Dyer. They did in January as well, offered about 250K probably in installments with tack ons. http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/4305678.Saints_will_not_sell_Dyer_on_the_cheap/
Super_Uwe Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 Of course but Lallana is worth far more than £200,000 and Surman is widely regarded as one of the better young midfielder's in the Championship. Can't people see that his confidence is low which is why is has struggled the last few months. It really isn't rocket science. Agree 100%. Surman is an England U-21 international of recent times and just needs confidence. A lot of non-Saints fans I know think he's really good! OK, being an U-21 international doesn't make you the best player ever, but you aren't going to be completely useless either. IMHO I am yet to be convinced of Lallana's physical capabilities; it's easy to forget that not so long ago he had serious heart surgery which could have ended his career. We stood by him and IMO he needs another season at Champ level before he can even think about playing in the Prem. But he has skill which will always hold him in good stead, and if I were in charge of a club and was led to believe I could get him for £200k, I'd be in there like a shot. We can all go on about how s*** and useless our players are, but at the end of the day there is some talent in our squad. Yes, the players have not shown it consistently at all, but you can bet your bottom dollar that some of these players will shine elsewhere. Dyer's relative success at Swansea shows that with the right team spirit/manager/setup he can be a real threat. He has pace and, as we've seen with Aaron Lennon's renaissance this season, if he can work on his crossing then he will do well. And stay out of trouble too, lol! Sorry, but that's complete rubbish. You get a lot less time on the ball in the Premiership. How many players can you name that have been rubbish in the Championship, only to go on and do well in the Prem?
ThorpG Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 It can't be 'complete rubbish' as clearly Surman and Lallana have attracted some Premiership interest. That does not apply to any of our other players. Clearly someone must think that they would be able to cut it at Premiership level. I am not saying they are great players merely that they may be able to do a job at a lower half Premiership team. Apparent interest from Fulham in Lallana suggests I am not the only one. As I stated I would not pay £1.5m for the pair of them.

KMondo Posted 22 April, 2009 Share Posted 22 April, 2009 With some clever marketing, we might be able to get a million for McGoldrick. We might just be able to scrape together another million for the rest of them put together. Subtract off 'loyalty bonuses' and it is really not much.
