'Nice' voice singing w*nk songs and looking like a complete hound v cr*p but very fit birds? Never mind that the voice is over rated, the latter wins every time and will do on this occasion as well.

What a dog. No thanks.

But the latter hasn't ever won unless you call Paul Potts and George Sampson very fit birds

She clearly does have a good voice IMO, although I do agree with hypo that the only reason she has spiked interest in the media is because of how she looks and the fact that it 'goes against the grain'... therefore it'll sell papers and get coverage and make people money etc, etc... sad indictment on modern society really.

I say good luck to her. If you like her voice, vote for her. If you don't don't.

Er except she doesn't. If she wasn't dog ugly no one would pay any attention to her.

Er, except she does. I don't watch the show but I've seen the clip and her voice sent shivers down my spine. As did that young Welsh lad incidentally.

Her looks have nothing to do with it. Judging people on looks is just plain silly. OK if she was trying to be a fashion model.

It's a bit like expecting every fashion model to have a superb singing voice, or every footballer to have a Masters degree in astrophysics.

It's a shame that people are so pre-occupied with looks that they can't see the wider picture. Symptomatic of a shallow society IMO.

Two (rather large) words: Rik Waller.

What about him? Same went for him... short term media interest, make a few people a bit of money off the back of it, and back to obscurity. None of which had anything to do with whether he could sing or not, just like the rest of the music industry.

Good voice certainly but not awesome at all. I have singing qualifications which make me eligible to teach and there is a lot wrong with her voice. As I said a good voice but generally unremarkable and there our hundreds of people I hear all the time who are markedly better. If she looked like everyone else she wouldn't have a hope of winning

She's an excellent singer. Just a shame that it's taken 30 odd years for her to be discovered.

If she had had some training from an early age she could have been a much better prospect. Having said that she's not a patch on professional singers. Just go to most West End shows (in fact go and watch Les Mis to see it done a thousand times better.) Hope she wins though because it is a good story.

Ive seen Les Mis three times and Susan Boyles rendition of I dreamed a dream was far better than any of the actresses that played collette in the stage show.

I was moved by her voice. I take the points that she stunned the audience

re her looks etc > I await to hear her sing another song but based on the one she sang, it was nothing short of brilliant.

Fair enough mate your opinion. Technically it wasn't much kop though and nothing special compared to hundreds of people I hear sing. Now paul potts he had a really really good voice

TBF the reaction down here is the same as everywhere else.

The whole audience s******ing thing leading up to that collective WTF moment is what has made her You Tube moment so special

Reality show or not, it was a special moment that technology allowed the world to share, it ain't what you do it's how you do it.

Good luck to the lass, I for one found it a magic moment, and at the end of the day I'd rather have that silly grin I had when I first saw it than the worries of the world.

That was a special moment, she probably won't have the same impact in that weird show and thank fook we won't get to see it all down here

Her voice is O.K. but it is the contradiction in the voice/image thing that made the moment special. I looked at it on Youtube having not seen the show and it was interesting that most of the comments on there were from Americans. I looked at a video of Elaine Page and the same Americans thought that Boyles voice was better.

I like musical theatre (no I`m not gay, before anyone suggests it!) and I hear far better voices than Susan Boyle at most shows I`ve seen. People like Maria Freidman, Ruthie Henshall, Lea Salonga (Hmmmm........) Marin Mazzie ...and Elaine Page have far better voices. Saw Evita at The Mayflower last week and the girl that played the lead (Rachel Wooding?) had an excellent voice IMHO.

Hi All

Musical Theatre's my business, so it's really interesting to hear these opinions (I'm usually more of a lurker here, but felt obliged to pop up on this one!)

I agree with you miserableoldgit. Her voice is pretty good -- she's certainly not bad at all -- but there are plenty of stronger singers working in the industry, so some of the hyperbole that creeps into these things is a bit silly IMO. I've worked on Les Mis myself in the past, and most Fantines (not Cosettes, Draganov) are considerably stronger -- but then you'd expect that, they're professional and do 8 shows a week, which really strengthens the voice up.

In addition to the names you mention -- some of whom are on the decline a bit now sadly -- I'd flag up names like Kerry Ellis, Tony Vincent, Sharon D Clarke, Zubin Varla and Jodie Jacobs, who are really, really good (whether or not you actually like musical theatre).

Having said all that, I wish Susan Boyle well. Her passion for what she does seems to come from the right place, and totally genuine, which is nice to see in a genre (as in reality tv) that's usually concerned with the pursuit of fame as an end in itself. She's also clearly got a lot of natural talent. With a bit of training, she'd probably have been a pretty good character actress -- there's certainly nothing wrong with the timbre of her voice. There's still time of course.

I love Les Mis. Have seen it four times and am always playing the music. Musical Theatre gets a bad press with a lot of people, but you cannot beat a good night out with a top musical. i know a number of people set in their ways who had preformed ideas about musicals but have changed their mind after going. I have seen most musicals in the West End and have rarely been disappointed, in fact I have had many pleasant surprises including going to watch "Ragtime" a few years ago which has become one of my favourites even though I knew little about it before I went.

Couldn't agree more -- think the whole genre has got a bit of a bad reputation (or at least, an inaccurate reputation) based on a few shows. Would really recommend Spring Awakening to anyone looking for something a bit different (it's even got nudity!) Also A Little Night Music is really excellent, and worth catching for its short season at the Garrick (and very much in the Ragtime model of more intelligent, yet tuneful, work). It's fantastic that you got to see Ragtime -- I'm pleased I did (it wasn't around for long).

Les Mis is rumoured to be touring again soon (first tour for about 15 years -- the London show turns 25 next year). I don't know the schedule, but I'd be surprised if it didn't land at the Mayflower at some point.

I hope so. I loved the cast on the "10th Anniversary" DVD esp (Colm Wilkinson, Philip Quast, Lea Salonga). Spamalot was supposed to be at The Mayflower but was pulled for some reason. Was rather hoping that the touring version of "Lord of the Rings" might go there at some point. "Ragtime" was magnificent. Maria Freidman was outstanding. She really is some performer.

My next outing (I hope) will be to see "Warhorse" at The New London. Not exactly a musical I know, but one that I really want to see.

At the risk of turning this into a 'My Favourite Musical' thread, I've seen most of the major musicals over many years.

It's not that often that I want to go back to see something for a second time but there are three exceptions to my self-imposed rule.

Les Mis is one, Cats is another and Chicago is the third. Probably the last two because of the dance content (and especially Chicago because that's the sort of dance I used to do). But for sheer singing and drama Les Mis would be top of my list.

So you can do "The Fosse Walk"! My daughter went to Doreen Bird and used to do it amazingly well!

P.S. Whats wrong with having a "Favourite Musicals" thread!

Jazz Hands lol. Gotta have a strong back to do the 'Fosse Walk'. It was all the clever stuff with the bowler hats that got me every time.

You've reminded me actually - Chorus Line - another great, great show :)

I've just rewatched Ms Boyle's performance -- was inspired to do so by this thread! I actually think I was a wee bit charitable to her previously. If she was packaged differently her voice would be much more cruelly exposed -- I'm not saying she can't sing, cos clearly she's got a pair of lungs, but when you compare it to someone like Ruthie Henshall's version (also on youtube), the gulf in class in pretty starkly exposed. The placement of her voice is very odd, and sort of unconnected, and there's no texture in the tone -- the nature of the song, and where it sits in her range, flatters to deceive a lot. I stand by my early comments, insofar as I wish her well, but it would be a little bit insane if she won (all IMHO of course).

Greatest musical for me is Into the Woods -- just has it all; wit, insight, intelligence, complexity and some lovely melodies. I will always have a big, big soft spot for Les Mis though.

Warhorse is supposed to be incredible.

So waht is Lea Salonga doing now

Colm Wilkison was one of the singers I heard when I saw Les Mis for the second time.

I was pretty impressed with Martin Guerre as musical to.

also while we are on the subject I though both the saturday night fever set and Miss Saigon were brillian. loved the helicopter in Miss Saigon.

I do back stage amatuer dramatics set building and always inspired by the professional sets that are put together but you cannot beat the cleverness of the les mis barrier set. awesome
