Hatch Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 I fancy taking the kids to France for a day on a ferry. What is Le Havre actually like, is there anything there to do.
Marsdinho Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Le Havre is in the North of France Its grim up north. HTH
Pancake Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Le Havre is in the North of France I would assume the large majority of places you could go on a ferry from England for a DAY trip to France would be on the Northern Coast!
Scummer Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Cherbourg might be a better bet. This place is right next to the ferry port: http://www.ville-cherbourg.fr/uk/seaside/la_cite_de_la_mer/la_cite_de_la_mer_cherbou/la_cite_de_la_mer/default.asp
WestSaint Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Just came off the Oriana which docked in Cherbourg last week. There is very little to see or do there. Le Havre is just a big industrial port. There is however a town called Honfleur which is a very picturesque which is accessible from Le-Havre
SuperMikey Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Le Havre is just a huge industrial town, nowt to do or see there really, unless your kids like warehouses and docks. Saint-Malo is quite a nice little seaside place, not sure if it'd be that great this time of year though. Ferry runs there from Weymouth, and IIRC it was quite cheap to go there. Oh, and there's fook all to do in Cherbourg, unless you're going on a booze cruise, in which case the Hypermarche's are worth a visit.
Scummer Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 How old are your kids? I'd have thought the largest aquarium in Europe would be quite an attraction, as would the submarine.
Dog Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 What about Calais? Queing up to see the largest aquarium in Europe.
Smirking_Saint Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Depends on the kids ages, have to agree with Honfluer though it is nice there but probably somewhere you would rather take the missus than kids.
rpb Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 I took my son to Le Havre for a day trip once. I haven't been tempted to repeat the experience...
Smirking_Saint Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Stay in the UK, there is pretty much feck all to do at a day trip in france TBF, especially with kids. The beer is expensive, it's boring, there are no longer any decent drink deals in the hyper markets, it's full of french. On the plus side, you can get a kronenberg with your cheeseburger in macD's
Guest Dark Sotonic Mills Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 There are some nice bars and restaurants in the old town in Cherbourg, and a couple of microbreweries. The Thursday market is huge and there is a massive shopping centre about 5 miles outside.
mack rill Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Le Havre is like Portsmouth tbh. FFS Ponty! even we have more to do than that shyt hole:mad:
Huffton Posted 20 April, 2009 Posted 20 April, 2009 Drive a bit further down the coast and visit the war graves at Omaha beach.
Special K Posted 20 April, 2009 Posted 20 April, 2009 As others have said, Le Havre is pretty ropey. But if you take the motor you can go to some nice places close by ; Ouistreham for the D Day story, Deauville for the beach (and a nice town too). There are some pretty coastal villages along form Le Havre, but there's not much to do there. If you go to Calais, again it's quite disappointing although not as bad as Le Havre, but if you can get to it, then Le Touquet is lovely and worth a punt, although it get's busy when the sun comes out.
