Son of Bob Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Having been bitten by the off-road bug after a couple of top weekends on Salisbury plain and I'm looking to get a 4 x 4. In order to get the missus to agree to me having one it has to fit a practical criteria as well so it must be a 7 seater. I'm on a budget of £2k or under and currently looking at 3 options. Either a Mitsibushi Pajero/Shogun on around a K or L plate, a Nissan Terrano on a P or R plate or a Ford Maverick on a P or R plate. Does anyone have any experience with any of these, good or bad? Also, does anyone have any other suggestions on what I could get on that budget? I don't want anything with hyper-mileage either!
Son of Bob Posted 17 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Unfortunately I was out-voted on that one!
Pancake Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Get the Ford Maverick if you want to spend more time getting it fixed/fixing it yourself than driving it.
Son of Bob Posted 17 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Why's that? My mechanic's told me they're pretty bomb proof. They are mechanically identical in every way to the Nissan Terrano. In fact they are basically Nissan Terranos with a Ford radiator grille.
Pancake Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 My Uncle had one, bloody aweful it was too! Of course, may just have been his one mind! EDIT: Sorry, he has an '01 model, which Wiki tells me isnt the same as the ones you are looking at SoB... move along, nothing to see here!
Dog Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Get a Landrover defender.
Son of Bob Posted 17 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 17 April, 2009 No worries! I know the later ones (that weren't built by Nissan) were a bit of a pig. Mainly because they were built for the American market.
Son of Bob Posted 17 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Get a Landrover defender. No good to me. Not good enough on the road for our needs. If I was looking for an out and out off-roader then that's what I would go for.
skintsaint Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 I got bitten by the 4x4 bug a while back and own a Jeep. Been out loads with various clubs and I can safely say that I havent seen any of them vehicles 'off' the road. Maybe the Cruisers, Patrols and Jeeps handle different as the terrain is different out here. Why not just pick up a cheap 4x4 which you dont mind banging up a bit if you want to do some good challenging 4x4'in? I have a few more scratches and dents on mine and I havent been on any tough trips yet.
Ponty Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 The old short wheelbase Suzuki Vitara. Bombproof and surprisingly capable. Will embarrass much more expensive machinery.
Johnny Bognor Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 The old short wheelbase Suzuki Vitara. Bombproof and surprisingly capable. Will embarrass much more expensive machinery. I would have thought that the Vitara would embarass the driver!
Ponty Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 Not if all you want to do is a bit of green-laning. In fact, any of the old Suzuki 4x4 range were more than competent. Thay have softened them up a bit recently though.

Ludwig Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 16. Just telling them the answer doesn't really help them does it? They're only cheating themselves. Use hints instead that lead them towards the answer.
