Our City is Beautiful, Our Parks are amazing..

Since moving to Brighton, I have always had to rush back to the station as quickly as I could after the final whistle; rushing out the ground, over the bridge and pegging it to catch the 17:36 train back along the South coast. Normally with my head down and usually in the winter-dark.

But today, thanks to the fact that it is a bank holiday, the train times were a bit wonky. So, not having to break a sweat, I was able to amble my way through the park and really enjoy it. Naturally, the fact that we had won, played some role in lifting my spirits, but in all honesty I am not exaggerating when I say that the park was totally majestic. Spring time was everywhere, the blossom, the tulips, the herbaceous borders, the more mature trees, everything was an absolute picture. The sun caught the Clock Tower perfectly, there wasn't a cloud in the sky, the birds were tweeting... it was heaven on Earth..

so rather than try and wax lyrical about the football, I thought instead I would just point out that we really are immensely lucky to have these parks in our City. And I truly give the gardeners who look after them my sincerest thanks, awesome job! An absolute pleasure, thanks

Our Southampton is a most beautiful city.

..and well done you Saints!

The bad news is of course that the parks are probably currently being kept by the SMS (award winning) ground staff who are hedging (no pun intended) their bets should the situation at Saints go completely pear shaped...!!! ;)

I was born in Soton and I must say that the parks were much more beautiful before the cost-cutting of previous decades. I still remember with fondness the aviary and the zoo. Wonderful places.

I live on the edge of the South Downs now, just outside Winchester and I must say that on an evening such as today's was, you could pay a fortune for a holiday and still not get as good a view as you can from the top of the downs looking over Shawford, Twyford and on towards Owslebury.

Football related in what way?

You're right of course, my pedantic little chappie.

Off we go to the lounge. Don't slam the door on your way out.

Brilliant images, I'm assuming they are from your neck of the woods (and seasonal).

Yes they are. The top one is the Itchen at Shawford (late spring), the second the view earlier this year from the top of the downs towards Twyford and the third is a panorama of the downs from near to the war memorial (summer).

I love spring, I feel it is perhaps the most dramatically diverse of our seasons. Not sure why this post is here but am enjoying it just the same. Should it go to the 'Golden Shower' post? or is that a different scene all together?

I think that'd be one of the German forums you'd be referring to.

OI! - look, don't take the mickey. My original post was totally sincere. Life is pretty crap at the moment what with the recession and everything, i've lost about half my income and the other half is not looking so good for the long term, so enjoying the City's parks for half an hour after seeing our boys win at home was a real highlight in my week. Take the **** all you want, but I enjoyed my day.

My partner was born in the so-called Garden City of New Zealand, ie. Christchurch. And she always used to say how wonderful the big green areas were in Southampton. I have always noticed that Southampton had more trees, parks and greenery within the city than others. It makes it all the more special.

I was having this discussion with my wife a few days ago, when we decided to come back for a visit for a couple of weeks in the summer.

Southampton is a wonderful city; it is near the New Forest, has wonderful parks and is near some stunning countryside in N. Hampshire. Also, for me (though my wife does not agree), I love looking across Itchen from Weston Shore or Victoria Country Park or Lepe beach towards the Isle of Wight, toward the forest, even the bloody oil refinery (especially at night). The river and coastal views are the bits of Southampton I miss the most.

Of course, I also miss the heart-lift and excitement that comes when I go over the Itchen Bridge and spot SMS for the first time on match-day, even if I am not going myself...

The problem with Southampton is that its populated with Southamptoners, some of which are the most miserable, negative, aggressive, scummy toss-pots it has even been my misfortune to encounter, and thats saying something considering I studied in Manchester..

and the evidence of this......????

Daily Echo headline around six months ago! cant be bothered to look it up as its common knowledge, there have been regular rapes and muggings over the last couple of years, and a friend of mine Phil Gray was stabbed to death in the parks in a row over his dog, need any more evidence?

I wish I had had that experience this weekend, I went back for Saturday and Sunday and was saddended at how soul-less Southampton feels compared to Brighton. It seems every time I go back there is another giant square monstrosity or block of 'luxury flats' but nothing built which you can actually do. This isn't a moan for moanings sake, as I said I was genuinely saddended by how I felt about a place I want to feel proud of.

I can't decide which of these generalisations is more offensive:

Amazed you got through without being mugged/stabbed/raped by some psychotic drugged up Pole.

A delightful thread sullied by two posters in need of therapy, IMHO.

You must have missed the first 2/3 of my post, followed in the last paragraph with the use of the word "some" then....

Your comment about requirements for therapy was obviously auto-biographical....

Alpine, you obviously have trouble making friends and this must have led to your unhappy attempt at making a life in Southampton with your Austrian bride. The fact that you are forced to live in the land of Hitler and looted Jewish gold is hardly my fault, nor, indeed any of the other inhabitants of this beautiful City, which happened to build the plane that helped defeat your adopted countryman. Please don't take it out on me. My wife is American, has lived here happily for 25 years and takes people as she finds them. If you did, maybe you wouldn't be so bitter with the sad life you lead, so clearly reflected in your posts...

I suppose that Southampton's spaciousness is partly the result of being blitzed flat in 1940 and being rebuilt from a clean slate.

I can still remember large parts of central Southampton being a bomb site and some of the major stores I believe temporarily moved to Winchester.

As did one of the grammar schools-Peter Symonds in the morning, Southampton in the afternoon.

I am not old enough to remember that but was once listening to friend who went to PS in the war telling me that at D-Day the tanks arrived at Winchester, drove down North Walls (where until recently you could see the marks on the kerbs from the tracks to Winchester bypass thence to the docks and military port. The boys watched them in the afternoon after the Southampton boys had arrived!

How did we get there, on a Saints board!

I know, Alpine, you must be ashamed. Pity you were never able to find a Southampton girl to marry, although I can understand the attraction of an Austrian bride. As they say in Austria: "Women are like good wine, best left to mature in a cellar."

Southampton is beautiful, and i must admit although everyone slags it off for being boring etc i believe there to be a lot more to do then most other places in the UK.

Alpine, i do agree it is full of w*nkers but unfortunately i believe it to be the same everywhere these days, always something kicking off somewhere

'kin ell! this thread was born as a light refreshing change from normality, all the "there wasn't a cloud in the sky, the birds were tweeting... it was heaven on Earth" and then it grew up on the saintsweb firing range to turn into all of the 'mugged, attacked, Josef Fritzl' references. Like real life itself? Oh well... off to dig out my hatful of hollow vinyls then :)

I love Southampton, but the only problem is that ist too flat.....I could do with a few mountains etc near by.

Helvellyn%20Panorama%20Sept%2007.jpg

Catstycam, Red Tarn, Striding Edge? Be nice if they were a bit closer. My Mrs keeps telling me to stop pining for the north and go out and do what there is locally. I find the coast walks are the best underfoot and give the best views. And you get to ride interesting little ferryboats like the startlingly pink boat from Warsash to Hamble. And the boat over to Hythe and the dinkyest electric train in the entire universe up the pier. It's not Helvellyn but it'll do for now...
