Matthew Le God Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 "We are two points from safety with three games to go and we still have Nottingham Forest to play so it is in our own hands. Three wins will keep us up." Mark Wotte after todays game Even if we win all three games we can still go down. If everyone from 21st upwards get more than 53 points we are down even if we win all 3. It makes no difference with the Forest game because they are in the bottom 3 anyway with us at the moment. You'd think he would know this

JonnyLove Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Well once ever the optimist but I have a pessimistic view that if we manage to stay up the FA will find away of docking us just the right amount of points to mess us up. Still good victory today but we really need to improve for the last 3 games.
Stepgar Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 No its not in own hands until we are out of the bottom three with games to go. Then and only then is it in own hands. Athough I do see his point.

Still good victory today but we really need to improve for the last 3 games. I'm inclined to agree but let's make sure they feel compelled to levy the charge this season or next season with us in the Champ. If they bring it next season in League One we're in serious poop.
smithy Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Nothing wrong with our manager wanting to keep spirits up though is there? Rather that than him saying 'well we're ****ed let's give up hope'
brmbrm Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Nothing wrong with our manager wanting to keep spirits up though is there? Rather that than him saying 'well we're ****ed let's give up hope' Yes, keep up spirits, but saying something obviously wrong makes the crew think "he's just wrong". That's counterproductive.
Matthew Le God Posted 13 April, 2009 Author Posted 13 April, 2009 Nothing wrong with our manager wanting to keep spirits up though is there? Rather that than him saying 'well we're ****ed let's give up hope' But he is factually incorrect. That was my point. It is not in our own hands as we can get 9 points and still go down. Thus it is out of our hands and dependant on other results going our way!

Thus it is out of our hands and dependant on other results going our way! We are 2 points off 3 teams, 3 wins will keep us up, you can have my personal guarantee on that. Doubt we will get them tho.
Matthew Le God Posted 13 April, 2009 Author Posted 13 April, 2009 We are 2 points off 3 teams, 3 wins will keep us up, you can have my personal guarantee on that. Doubt we will get them tho. I know 3 wins will most likely keep us up. However that wasn't my point. It doesn't guarantee us staying up as Wotte has stated.

Thus it is out of our hands and dependant on other results going our way! Yes, I did get your point, but he is trying his best to big us up for the last three games. I have no problem with him massaging the facts to keep up team spirit. Apart from the fact that we are unlikely to need 9 points to stay up. Even though we probably won't get them, or stay up.
saint lard Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 The League Association will decide our fate, not how many wins we get in the remaining games, unfortunately
Fan The Flames Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 I have notice that this statement's meaning is starting to change over the last few years and people use it in the wrong way.
Amesbury Saint Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 The League Association will decide our fate, not how many wins we get in the remaining games, unfortunately but lets make them make a decision.
BlagdonSaint Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 If the FA don't dock us points then I predict that both us & Forest will stay up with Charlton, Norwich & Barnsley being relegated ( or have I had too much beer tonight celebrating a 1-0 win over a team that were there for the taking ?? ! )
scott_saints Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I reckon we'll stay up by getting another 6 points
Window Cleaner Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I am sure that our fate will eventually be decided by 2 factors, the 10 points we get docked by the football league and if by some miracle they agree that our jiggery pokery is better than Luton,Leeds,Bournemouth etc, I believe we will sincerely regret not having beaten Charlton at home. We will look back and say "that was the day we failed to survive".
Window Cleaner Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I reckon we'll stay up by getting another 6 points Stay up on 50 with our goal difference ?? I fully expect Plymouth to cave in against Barnsley and Coventry to just not turn up against Forest.

VectisSaint Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 Yeah, someone needs to tell him it's three down. Does ant one know 4 across?
70's Mike Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 Does ant one know 4 across? was the clue duck hunting ex football club chairman 6 letters ?
Dalek2003 Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 He's wrong, but what do you expect him to say. What is the point in chucking in the towel while there is still a chance.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 He's wrong, but what do you expect him to say. What is the point in chucking in the towel while there is still a chance. He could chuck the towel in and resign and we could get Hoddle in for the last 3 games:D

yorkiesaint Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 don't anyone tell him! on the last day he'll be celebrating while everyone else is miserable. then he'll have to go.

CB Fry Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 How does that make sense? If we don't get 3 wins, the league will have no influence on it as we'll already be down. We have to stay up then it's down to the league if they want to rewrite their rules under pressure from other clubs. If we get more points than 3 teams, we deserve to stay up and they deserve to go down. The league would be in no position to relegate us and would face a large court case if they did. The League is the property of The Football League and its members so the Football League have all the "influence" in the world as to whether we stay up or go down. They could kick us out of the league completely if they want. At the end of the day, in their terms we've "cheated" by going into admin - lots of clubs have gone into admin and been punished, and we'll be punished. Our best bet is stay up and get away with it. Second best is stay up on points and get 10 points docked and down. Worst, and by far most likely, is down anyway and 10 points next season. If they don't dock us and we stay up they could face "a large court case" from Forest, Norwich and/or Barnsley as well as any other club showing support - Leeds, Luton, Rotherham, Bournemouth. Being the league is a members club, there will be more members against us "cheating" than for us "cheating". The precendent has been set that going into admin is "cheating" (not my view). We have "cheated" and we will be punished. This "holding company" guff is weasily bravado from Lowe and co thinking they are clever and have outwitted the league, which has probably ****ed them off even more. We haven't got a hope of avoiding penalty. The League is a members club and will do what the hell they want.
DT Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I've just done that predictor thingy and have us down with Charlton and Barnsley on goal difference, assuming we lose on the last day at Forest. Which we will. Oh dear. Forest will be well out of it.
WestSaint Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 And the draws against Derby & QPR. And the Doncaster game - Our home form has been appalling. If only we could have won just a couple more games ......................
Dalek2003 Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 He could chuck the towel in and resign and we could get Hoddle in for the last 3 games:D Not worth it. A good shout for our new season though.

so22saint Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I think not getting Hoddle in has led to league 1... ;-)

Evil Monkey Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 Sorry if this is thr wrong place for this. Can someone explain to me why the media are saying that Charlton (currently on 34 points) are NOT yet mathematically relegated? They are 12 points from safety with 12 points to play for. So yes, if Saints, Barnsley and Forest fail to surpass 46 points, AND Chalton somehow claw back the GD, they would stay up. But we play forest in our last game. Those points have to go somewhere. Am I missing something, or is it just lazy journos not checking details?

S4INT Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 Does anyone think that two wins and a draw from our last three (giving us 51 points) will be enough to keep us up? I just did the BBC predictor with us only getting 50 points and being relegated below Barnsley on goal difference
SaintRobbie Posted 17 April, 2009 Posted 17 April, 2009 The man's a genius. 3 games and regardless of the outcome... Wotte's history. Thank god.
