Saint Charlie Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Took stick earlier in the season but has grown into one of our most consistent players IMO. Superb today, endless supply of great crosses, solid defending and thoughtful passes, no hoofball. Brilliant, and must keep whatever division we are in!
Papa Shango Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Great shout, James has improved a hell of a lot over the course of the season. I thought we badly missed him when he was suspended recently.
swannymere Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 It's a pity he still doesn't have a proper look before sending a cross into nothingness. 75% of his balls don't reach a saints player and he should come to the byline more before crossing, but for a first year pro he's doing better than we should have expected, so well done.

Totally disagree. He put in some great balls but the strikers movement was none existant. He hardly gave the ball away today.
Dicko Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Without doubt, our most improved player He's one of the few players who will end this season with his reputation enhanced
VectisSaint Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Have to agree, he is the one and only youngster that will come out of this awful season and become a better player next term. The other kids that have played regularly have not really progressed, indeed in some cases (Surman, Lallana) have gone backwards, always the danger when you rely too much on youngsters. James may not have had the greatest season this year, but he will be a terrific asset next year based on a solid year's experience.
thefuriousb Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Absolutely! Just said the same thing on the post match thread. For a chap who has played his entire career to date as the linch-pin of the midfield in the youth and reserve set up he has been an unmitigated success.
paulwantsapint Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Boy not done bad after playing whole season out of position in awful defence only hope is that he stays next season
70's Mike Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 It's a pity he still doesn't have a proper look before sending a cross into nothingness. 75% of his balls don't reach a saints player and he should come to the byline more before crossing, but for a first year pro he's doing better than we should have expected, so well done. disagree because he has no support in front of him he cannot risk getting to the byeline, the reason why balls do not reach saints players is that our front two are static in the box with no movement towards the ball which makes it easy to defend
wild-saint Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Decent enough, Shame about his lack of pace. He looks like he is towing a caravan at times IMO.
Causer Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Another brilliant performance from him. Solid defensively and has a wonderful bending cross whcih decent strikers would score off.
swannymere Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 We'll despite being in a minority i still think he should look before knocking the ball in, more often than not it's nowhere near another saints player, you say lack of player movement, i say lack of execution. The truth is it's probably six of one and half a dozen of the other:p He is vastly improved from earlier in the season though.
TheSaint75 Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Just think how much he could have improved if playing in his usual midfield role? Best crosser of the ball in the team by a mile, shame we haven't learnt how to use it properly
saint_ed Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Good shout Charlie. I personally have given him a lot of stick but the past couple of months he has vastly improved. I still have some doubts regarding his positional sense however but he is regularly sweeping up behind Perry and Saeijs.
SoccerMom Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Good shout Charlie. I personally have given him a lot of stick but the past couple of months he has vastly improved. I still have some doubts regarding his positional sense however but he is regularly sweeping up behind Perry and Saeijs. Can't be any worse than Rudi's - in fact it's much better. He is getting more instinctive about it, and clearly has learned to adapt to the new position from the direction of the older players. Shame you can't say the same about Rudi.
Bailey Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 James is definitely our most improved player. Took him a while to adapt to his new position, but considering it's his first season in the first-team, he's done very well. I realised how much we rely on him when Thomson stepped in whilst James was suspended. Made a massive difference! I've criticised James in the past, but he really has come on leaps and bounds. Fair play to him.
Ludwig Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 We still need a right back. James should go into midfield, either central or on the right, he's not a full-back even if he hasn't done too appalingly this season.
Golden Balls Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Nobody has given him more stick than me, but I was saying the same today. He has come on leaps and bounds and is one of the better players in the team. Now we just have to sort his attitude out

musesaint Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Excellent Whether we stay up or go down we need to keep him IMHO
forever a red and white Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 i think james is realtively quick with the ball, good delivery and reads the game very well, perhaps be could be a long term RB solution
Saint dyer Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 lloydy...take a bow. most improved player with mcgoldrick not far behind. will be a key player for us at RB or midfield
Saint_clark Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 Absolutely! Just said the same thing on the post match thread. For a chap who has played his entire career to date as the linch-pin of the midfield in the youth and reserve set up he has been an unmitigated success. That's obviously the main reason he was so bad earlier in the season - he had to settle into the RB position.
Saints Ward Posted 13 April, 2009 Posted 13 April, 2009 considering his complete lack of support from a right midfielder then yes, done very well this season. May be even better if we had a proper right midfielder (or play him in midfield with a proper right back)
Bakovnetski Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 Totally disagree. He put in some great balls but the strikers movement was none existant. He hardly gave the ball away today. Ditto. He put in some really dangerous crosses that should have been better used if the strikers were more alert. Euell was unlucky not to score when he did get ahead of his man and put it just over the bar. Whereas Lallana balooned a couple over the area into no-man's land.
saintedwill Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I was worried about how shaky he looked at the start of the season, but I put part of that down to the fact hat we never had a settled team and that's always difficult when you're learning a new position. As the season's progressed, he's quite well and I think that he could make the transition with another season. I'd still prefer to see him in midfield though because his crossing ability is superb
sidthesquid Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I've rated him for a long time despite some on here being really malicious about him (one or two even saying they would have preferred Jermaine Wright (!!!) He still looks better going forward than defending, but he is dogged, and he rarely wastes the ball when he has possession & can deliver a decent cross. Let's just hope we can keep him when his contract expires in the summer
Dan Johnson Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 I'd put across the arguement that McGoldrick is still improving at just the same rate as James... Proof I think that if we manage to keep this team together we will have a good side. Gillet before his injury looked as though he's still improving, Lallana was a different player yesterday than in recent games.... Dont want to take that away from James, who in recent weeks, has improved drastically!

Superb today, endless supply of great crosses, solid defending and thoughtful passes, no hoofball. Brilliant, and must keep whatever division we are in! Improved he definitely has...but Gillet impresses me the most

Improved drastically I know what you mean, but those words just don't seem to complement each other particularly well
Hopkins Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 Now we just have to sort his attitude out WTF? Explain this comment.... Either explain it or admit it's just one of those "all young people have an attitude...back in my day blah blah" **** comments. I'd love to see how the guy who's captained the youth teams and reserve teams since he's been at our club has an attitude which needs sorting out... ****.

His attitude used to stink and there were various stories doing the rounds of his attitude towards other 'nippers'. Happily it looks like he's grown up since then.
Chez Posted 14 April, 2009 Posted 14 April, 2009 slow and can't head. Serious problems for a fullback in my opinion, but his composure on the ball is a delight as to is his crossing and passing. I'd like to see him get to the byeline though once in a while. Having a real right midfielder that covers him when he does would help.
