Atticus Finch of Maycomb Posted 16 April, 2009 Share Posted 16 April, 2009 What is the point of spamming random crap on a thread ********? But i wasn’t even talking to you. Nobody was. You accuse me of random spamming on a thread but at least all my threads have been on topic, and the topic has been really interesting to debate. Whether you agree with the majority on this thread that Widderington can do a job for us or not. All your posts have just been abuse. Is it that you feel ignored? NickG Posted 16 April, 2009 Share Posted 16 April, 2009 Ok, I give in, we should appoint a manager who 1) has never managed at any level at all 2) currently on coaching staff at non-league level 3) has the player signing draw of a player who has hardly played at the top level, never internationally, who some of his cousins have never heard of 4) who is so saints through and through that he played less than 20% of his career at the club - and has less appearances than that saints stalwart - Rudi Skacel

From those comments I can see very good reasons why he has never entered management.

WokingSaint Posted 16 April, 2009 Share Posted 16 April, 2009 For the Special Attention of Nick G. Can this be returned to a David Armstrong Thread! Nick, I don't quite understand your post but if you are referring to DA he played 9 Seasons for Middlesborough and 6 for Saints. That does not add up to 20%. He also played 3 times for England. Between 1981 and 87 he was part of far and away the best midfield Saints are ever likely to have. Why he has never managed I do not know but he is a far better candidate than that non entity Tommy whats his name.

norwaysaint Posted 16 April, 2009 Share Posted 16 April, 2009 Yes, NickG was is another in a long list posting to get behind Tommy Widdrington. To be honest this groundswell of support has caught me by surprise and although I was a neutral in all of this before, I say what the hell, give the fans who they want as this could really bring everyone together. I see it's on wikipedia that he's one of the favourites now as well. No smoke without fire imo.

Kadeem Hardison Posted 16 April, 2009 Share Posted 16 April, 2009 You make some valid points here Nick. he played for us nearly as many times as he did Grimbsy or Port Vale, infact we were less than 20% of his playing career! He played here for 6 years of his 19 year career - nearly 30% of his career! He only played for Grimsby and Port Vale for 3 years each. Unless you are suggesting that he should manage both teams at the same time, in which case I don't think that is allowed (although I am willing to be put right on that one as I am not 100% on it.) (less than Rudi has - who also bleeds red and white) Good call, although I would think Rudi would want to continue his playing career for a bit before he goes into management. He is worth a shot as player-manager though. But TW would be my first choice. I am sure he is a great bloke, and maybe could be a good manager at a higher level! I agree! I think he could be a good manager at a higher level too, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't have a go at managing in the Championship/League 1 first. We should snap him up before the likes of Middlesboro do (he's a Wallsend boy so them and Newcastle might sniff around him). No, its Ivan Golac for me. Another good shout, but, although he did a good job at Dundee United, we need someone with a bit of passion at the club - a proper footballing man. Didn't he used to take the players out to the meadows to smell the flowers as a motivational technique?

Bath Saint Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 On reflection, it seems to me that there is a pretty good case for Tommy Widdrington. We could at least give him a go. Who knows, we may find ourselves a real miracle worker...

SaintRobbie Posted 17 April, 2009 Share Posted 17 April, 2009 I would of taken a chance with an Armstrong/Merrington combo time and time again over the likes of JP or wotte. True... but give me a bigger name and we attract better players.
Wiltshire Saint Posted 18 April, 2009 Share Posted 18 April, 2009 I have been on holiday in Spain for a week and I bumped into someone pretty closely connected to Saints while out there (promised not to mention his name) and he was suggesting that someone like Widdrington is being lined up for us when we're in L1. He wou;dn't confirm TW definitely, but reading between the lines, I think we have found our man and it's just a case of waiting. I am very excited about the prospect to be honest and if nothing else it will make a few people on here eat their words (and probably some humble pie as well!).
