Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 Anyone know of a high street shop that sells standard screw or bayonet UV bulbs?
Barfy Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 Pet shops usually have them. Had to buy a couple whilst looking after a tortoise for a few months.

Jillyanne Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 Anyone know of a high street shop that sells standard screw or bayonet UV bulbs? What do you want it for anyway? Growing certain plants?
miserableoldgit Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 A lot of Craft shops like Hobbycraft sell them.
Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Author Posted 7 April, 2009 What do you want it for anyway? Growing certain plants? No, sub visible light photography.
Ponty Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 Actually then, a pet shop probably won't help. Their UV bulbs are UVA and UVB producing bulbs with visible white light. At least, the ones I buy are as they're designed to mimic sunlight. If you want blacklight UV you might have to look elsewhere.
Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Author Posted 7 April, 2009 Nuts. To be honest, I dont mind mixing some visible in there too; that actually might add to the stuff Im doing.

Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Author Posted 7 April, 2009 And what pet do you have that needs such a light? I guess he has a gecko.
Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Author Posted 7 April, 2009 Why? Well, I suspect the gecko is in fact Head of Design at Renault F1 and it's Ponty's turn to look after him this season. Ponty chose to do this to keep his job chances intact in these days of recession.

Weston Super Saint Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 You might need to research which wave lengths work best for the piccies too... I have absolutely no idea how it works for photography, but I know that checking notes for forgeries works better with different wavelengths, so figure it must be quite important...
Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Author Posted 7 April, 2009 One thing you need is a lens that is relatively "non-coated", obviously as that cuts down the amount of UV that enters. Luckily, Ive got a stash of old Olympus OM lenses that seem to be rather sensitive to UV light.
Weston Super Saint Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 What are you shooting, and can you post the results when done?
Pancake Posted 7 April, 2009 Author Posted 7 April, 2009 Not really sure yet. Defo try some portrait, maybe some stiff life; both of those lit using the blacklight bulb. Im thinking of trying a Wratten 18a filter (or cheaper equivalent) and getting some landscape stuff.
Big John Posted 8 April, 2009 Posted 8 April, 2009 A place in Swaythling sells all sorts of lights like that. Mainly disco lights, so should have some U/V ones.
Weston Super Saint Posted 8 April, 2009 Posted 8 April, 2009 Maybe Maplins :smt102 http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=uv%20light%20bulbs&source=15
Weston Super Saint Posted 30 April, 2009 Posted 30 April, 2009 Great piece on studio lighting in this months [May] Digital Slr Photography magazine. Gotta be worth checking out for all your lighting needs
John Boy Saint Posted 1 May, 2009 Posted 1 May, 2009 This any good? Based up at Amersham north of High Wycombe. http://www.lightbulbs-direct.com/category/91/uv-blacklight-blue/
