SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 OK ... even I didn't want to start this one until the end of the season but after yesterday's debacle I think we all know that Wotte is unlikely to remain in his position next season regardless of the outcome. Assuming the worst case - starting in League 1 with minus 10 points - who would we see as the best choice of manager for the new owners. The selection of the position of manager will be the most critical one the new owner(s) will need to make - and is worth investing in for success. Ultimately it is the manager who will make our team competitive again. I say MANAGER as that would be my preference - no coach, just a good old Manager! I also say WE NEED SOMEONE FOR THE LONG TERM. Whoever we bring in MUST be selected with a 6 year mandate. We've proved chopping and changing doesnt work. My choice? Paul Ince on a long contract. Hungry, knows the leagues, young enough to stay and rebuild this club with entertaining football. Good enough to motivate what we have (if necessary) to at least remain in League 1 this coming season. AND a man who will attract men to play for us. Who would you like to replace Wotte and why?
beatlesaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 I think, for the league we are going to be in then Paul Ince or Steve Coterill are about the best we could hope for. Never thought i would say it but i would go for Coterill.....only because League 1 is about his level (tho he did well at Burnley for a fair while)
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Shearer and Dowie Did you see his interview on MOTD last night...made it PERFECTLY clear he wasn't going to be at StJames Park next season 'supposedly' back as a pundit.... Ahem...would be the most perfect way to start a new regime.... Shearer and Dowie, ex-Saints, both pundits on the BBC..... Davies Frost Motty Next we'll be having Nick Girdler as first team coach!
beatlesaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Next we'll be having Nick Girdler as first team coach! On the evidence of yesterday i think he already is !!

Good call, but I suspect Shearer and Dowie will be the men to get the Toon back up to the Premiership at the end of next season and so will stay in post.
The Fat Controller Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 get KEEGAN in now to the end of the season, he has experience with this league and will give the youngsters a hell of a boost
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 On the evidence of yesterday i think he already is !! ...and I think the collective of Albert's Gang would have performed better than most on the pitch..
Saint Charlie Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Eddie Howe. Worked wonders at Bournemouth. Knowledge of league 1, has served an apprenticeship of sorts, good with the media. Definately better than getting a hasbeen like Cotteril from the managerial gravy train.
PaulSaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 get KEEGAN in now to the end of the season, he has experience with this league and will give the youngsters a hell of a boost I agree with TFC. A clean sweep of the board, manageable debt, Keegan in charge (hopefully doing a Fulham) and 25k a week & I will be happy again!
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 (edited) Any talk of a new manager is pointless until we have some idea what the situation will be. Might be CCC (and if that miracle happens then Wotte should keep his job), might be league 1, but with points deductions it'll be a relegation fight, might be god knows what regional division, in which case I'd hope it would be a former player in charge to get things going. In any of those situations, my first choice will remain MLT, maybe with Holmes as assistant. Adrian - as I tried to articulate above, assume League 1 at minus 10 points. I agree we dont know how much investment is coming but Fry has indicated there are at lease x3 'serious' contenders we can at least expect or reiterate to the new owners the importance of their selection of manager and the need for a long term candidate. FWIW, I'd like to see MLT and Benali run the team now - once it becomes certain we're going down - just so we see the season out with pride. But, wouldnt want MLT as a permanent manager, when I suspect we can have better. Edited 5 April, 2009 by SaintRobbie spellink
um pahars Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 IMHO it's too late to change for this season, unfortunately the dice have been rolled and we will have to make do with what we have. In just over a week there will only be 3 games left!!! If Wotte pulls this off (which I'm now beginning to very much doubt) then he still may deserve a go, but I think he will walk either way (just a gut feel looking at his past record and thinking that he is a Lowe guy). As for a replacement for next season, I'm afraid my head is spinning too uch from other things to even think about it!!!!!!!!
alpine_saint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Wotte needs to go. No doubt. Shearer imo is too self-centred and too self-absorbed to be a decent manager, but I would give Dowie a go, definitely. But then I was touting him to replace Burley 6 months before he went to the Scotland job..

I would lose optimism if he stayed and I suspect so would thousands of others. The fact that Wotte was the chief architect for the whole season of total youth rubbish and fed Lowe sweety mice in the first place makes him a no go IMHO - the season as a WHOLE needs to be considered when weighing up re-appointing Wotte. I just can't see it as an option to be considered by any new owner. He's history IMHO.
Saint Charlie Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 A lot of the Managers mentioned wouldn't be prepared to work in League One.
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 Surprised noone has mentioned Roy Keane yet.
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 (edited) A lot of the Managers mentioned wouldn't be prepared to work in League One. I was thinking that with regards to Keegan. The other thing that would worry me if Keegan got it (or Keane to be honest) would be his staying power... we need consistency now. Edited 5 April, 2009 by SaintRobbie
derry Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Wotte didn't do too badly until yesterday maybe he's just been lucky to get the three wins on the bounce, precious little since. The team he picked was predictably awful and unbalanced. He should have made two substitutions and changed it after 20 mins and taken Thompson and Lallana off. Again at half time possibly three changes. He didn't do a damn thing, Smith came on at 64mins, BWP at 73mins and Liptak for Thompson at 80mins FFS. At 3-1 down Wotton was still playing as a holding midfielder FFS. It was probably the most incompetent managerial performance from any manager I've seen in 55 years.
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 It was probably the most incompetent managerial performance from any manager I've seen in 55 years. Who do you want then derry?
PaulSaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 My second choice would be "Aidy Boothroyd", reckon he might be a stayer too?
ottery st mary Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 O'Driscoll...Doncaster Manager. Or Ray Harford...Luton Manager. Or even Warnock at Palace.
derry Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Who do you want then derry? What I want and what we could afford are a different kettle of fish. Roy keane would sort out a lot of our problems but wouldn't do it without money. If it was a no money job I'd give Nick Holmes a go.
bridge too far Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 What about Paul Tisdale? Ex Saint and doing well with Exeter.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 O'Driscoll...Doncaster Manager. Or Ray Harford...Luton Manager. Or even Warnock at Palace. Otts..do you mean Mick Harford? Ray Harford isn't really in a position to help us right now (RIP) - although possibly still has more tactical awareness than Wotte....
Mr Saints Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 He can be a **** but Dennis Wise did very well in League 1 with Swindon and Leeds.
Badger Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 What about Paul Tisdale? Ex Saint and doing well with Exeter. Would be my first choice too. As well as the above credentials he is manager who has some achievements behind him,and a great deal of potential ahead of him.My understanding is that his success at Team Bath and Exeter has been by building a team with little or no resources.Seems ideal. Question though, would he see Saints in decline as a better option than Exeter who are stll in the ascendency ? We need a stable and trustworthy board to convince him.
sotonist Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 we're getting towards the stage where micky adams becomes an option again. he's about as attractive appointment as we are as an employer. and he might do it for peanuts.
Rattlehead Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Dennis Wise, Roy Keane, Paul Ince - all c*nts. No thanks.
Rattlehead Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 The league we're going to be in???? The odds of that being league 1 seem very slim. If we don't end up in League One, I will eat my garage.
Kadeem Hardison Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 My second choice would be "Aidy Boothroyd", reckon he might be a stayer too? Why on earth would we want a stayer? This thread is evidence enough of the idiotic need to change our manager every five minutes. People hold Lowe responsible for our managerial merry-go-round causing many of our problems; 5 minutes after he leaves, we're all calling for a change ourselves. We just need a settled club. Which means a settled coaching team, given time to steady the ship. As someone pointed out on here, Wotte has done alright up until now. Perhaps you could all get some valium. Those knees appear to have some sort of involuntary spasm.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Wotte is currently part of the problem, but the real reason we are in the kaka is because our players aren't collectively good enough. Lawrie always said you needed Roadsweepers and Violinists in your team - we have a couple of fiddle players and a lot of Litter Pickers. Didn't think I'd ever say this but put Licka, Idiakez, Ostlund and Jermaine Wright in this current side and we'd look like foooking Brazil.
Dalek2003 Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Glenn hoddle. He has the contacts and led Swindon out of the old third division.
Rattlehead Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Glenn hoddle. He has the contacts and led Swindon out of the old third division. Also a c*nt. No thanks.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Glenn hoddle. He has the contacts and led Swindon out of the old third division. Glenn Hoddle - intrinsictly linked to Lowe, poor record apart from Swindon, ignored MLT at his peak whilst England manager (hat-trick in B Team anyone?), mates with Lowe, his Academy was probably one of the reasons Lowe went down the 'Youth Route', Diamond Lights, Shredded Wheat advert playing happy families, Eileen Drewery....need I go on???
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 Glenn hoddle. He has the contacts and led Swindon out of the old third division. LOL was waiting for that from dalek! No to Hoddle from me - for one reason... dont need any division and 'I told you so's' from pro-Hoddles or anti-Hoddles. New man needed for a long period.
VectisSaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 As someone pointed out on here, Wotte has done alright up until now. Who, where, how? Wotte has not really done much better than JP, he was fortunate that things came together for 3 games, but since then really it has been downhill all the way...
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 Who, where, how? Wotte has not really done much better than JP, he was fortunate that things came together for 3 games, but since then really it has been downhill all the way... To be honest Vectis I was unsure whether to post this thread as I expected more 'get behind Wotte FFS' type posts than this. Interesting that there hasnt been.
Dicko Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 What about a manager who understands the English leagues, got Reading promoted from League 1, got West Ham promoted from the Championship, kept them in the Premier League and took them to within 1 minute of winning the FA Cup? Alan Pardew anyone?
Saint 76er Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Wotte has to go, he's too intrinsically linked to Lowe. Can you imagine the distrust that he would be relaying inside info back to his master who may in turn use Wotte to plan his return? Now this may not be the case but plenty of people will fear it and this place is almost drowning in paranoia as it is. In any event it must be obvious to all that Wotte has nothing to offer in English football (other than slagging off fans like his master)... get rid of, simple as. I like Sean O'Driscoll, he used to write a column in the "Sports Echo" and he seriously knew his stuff. He was well qualified and very tactically aware with excellent man management skills (no wonder Rupes never employed him then ). He could of course be teamed with the up and coming Eddie Howe who hasn't put a foot wrong in his short tenure at Bomo. Both are local men and would be ideal, however in truth can't see SO'D wanting to drop down a division, although he may be tempted to return to God's own country, you never know! My alternative would be Jim Gannon from Stockport. By all reports he is a hot shot L1 manager destined for better things. He would very probably accept and his broad experience of L1 would be invaluable. Don't think we would get Darren Ferguson but Aidy Boothroyd would also be a good call. It has to be an up and coming manager hungry for success who wants to grow with us. None of the tired old gravy train mob thanks...
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Author Posted 5 April, 2009 He can be a **** but Dennis Wise did very well in League 1 with Swindon and Leeds. or was that Gus Poyet?
ottery st mary Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Otts..do you mean Mick Harford? Ray Harford isn't really in a position to help us right now (RIP) - although possibly still has more tactical awareness than Wotte.... Cheers...Mind you the other one, Ray could give some spiritual help.
Ludwig Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 I still like Aidy Boothroyd, I reckon he's learnt a lot from the mistakes he ended up making at ****ford.
LeBenali Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Dennis Wise, Roy Keane, Paul Ince - all c*nts. No thanks. Thing is, look at our recent unsuccessful managers - Gray, Wigley, Sturrock, JP, Wotte...all 'nice' guys who couldn't get the job done. Maybe a c*nt is what we need?

Maybe a c*nt is what we need? We need a disciplinarian, motivated, prepared to see it through the long haul, well known and motivated who understands the leagues from 1 to the Premiership. Someone who can engender fight and build a team. We need someone who will attract players - even in League 1 - because we need to replace almost all of our existing team.
