hypochondriac Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 At the end of last season and the beginning of this one he was our brightest prospect. His skills were excellent and I was constantly screaming to pass it to him because he made things happen and was exciting to watch. Since christmas he has been pretty awful and looks like a different player making very basic errors that he would never have made 12 months ago. He has lost that direct play that made him so exciting and he rarely takes on and runs at defenders anymore. What do you think has gone wrong and if he is still around next year do you reckon he will be able to recapture some of his form?

Hyped up too soon, believed the hype, one of the dangers of bringing in young players too soon. He will bounce back, but probably needs some time out of the team and out of the spotlight. I didn't see him do anything yesterday.

I think he has lost his confidence, the pressure of our league position has got to him and to steal one of Dave Merrington's fave phrases I think he lacks the mental toughness a player needs, especially now. Of course both JP and now Wotte keep on about how the poor little lambs are tired so perhaps he gets tired quicker than the rest !!

On the lash with Surman and Pulis in Bournemouth most Thursday nights I was told last week. Just repeating what I was told - they have been seen on a regular basis like this. Would fit in with their lacklustre performances recently - alcohol and professional sport do not mix well.

That would explain a hell of a lot with regard to both of them.....obviously cant judge Pulis...thankfully !
Saint Charlie Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 The system MW is playing now doesn't really suit him. Whilst JP's system didn't really work, it did suit Lallana perfectly. He isn't a winger, he is a support striker/no 10.

Didnt he burst into tears in town one night, a few weeks back, when someone decided to give him a forthright opinion of his current form ???
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Didnt he burst into tears in town one night, a few weeks back, when someone decided to give him a forthright opinion of his current form ??? Perhaps that's why they are drinking in Bournemouth then..
um pahars Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Possibly one of the casualties of the sudden influx of youth into the fist team. This is a tough old league, with games thick and fast (sure the Youth Team only play something like 30 games) and so much pessure has been heaped on so many young shoulders. Although there is the argument that the best way to learn is to be thrown in at the deep end, I also think it is valid to say that youngsters need to be nurtured and introduced when there ready in a controlled manner.
ALWAYS_SFC Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Didnt he burst into tears in town one night, a few weeks back, when someone decided to give him a forthright opinion of his current form ??? He was told by a fan stood next to me yesterday after the game that "you were awfull today adam" to which he replied "i can`t hear you" .. he heard alright just did not like it As he got in his car with some hanger on kid "about 19 ish" the lad turned and said to the fan and me "you were great weren`t you" what ever that was about?, i told him to "shut up,it`s nothing to do with you, get in the car and clear off" Lallana then gave us the middle finger through the window as he drove off.. ****y little **** will be reminded of that when he arrives for the Palace game
derry Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 It was the end of the road for Lallana when he was hyped up by Pearce and went with the England U21's. He plays like a little boy lost, good touches, lacks pace, round and round, no end product, no awareness, gets sucked into the middle, no idea about going wide, never drifts outside the last defender to attack the back post, scuffs his shots and his corners are poor. He really needs to go back to basics in the reserves, rebuild his confidence and stop trying to play off the cuff,

I know AS is a supporter but you would have thought yesterday would have been his chance to lead from the front for the fans. Lallana looked lightweight, unprepared and unfit...reminded me of one of Burley's.

Dicko Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 I'm shocked at the demise of Lallana I was one of the supporters bigging him up 6 months ago, but I have to admit, he looks a shadow of that player now I think he has become a bit big-headed and probably won't hang around for League 1 football

Looked fresh, eager, fit and refreshing. Could be the impact of Rupey's Wonderful Dutch Revolution - I said in October time that all of the 'bigging up' of these players was affecting their performance...hopefully looking at the league table will make them smell the coffee..... BTW, seeing as Euell and Davis deferred their wages so the youngsters could be paid, I bet they are wishing they reconsidered after yesterday - should be the other way around... Youngsters giving up their salaries to those who actually give a sh1t.

Same as usual, got selected for the U21s, heard of flash cars, big money and roasting flash tarts 24/24,7/7. Trouble is he just ain't that good.
derry Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 The diamond is probably a lot of the problem with both Surman and Lallana. There is never an early forward wide option which is making both players pass inside or have to turn away and play the ball back or back sideways to a full back. It has completely stifled our football and results in the hopeless punt upfield straight to the opponents big defenders.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 he's signed a pre-contract with another club Fulham? Well if that's true don't play him again this season. Ungrateful little $h1te..there were 27,000 others in there yesterday, man and boy, woman and girl that would have put more effort in.
derry Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 he's signed a pre-contract with another club I'm not absolutely sure but neither Lallana or Surman are out of contract this year.
Dicko Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 I'm not absolutely sure but neither Lallana or Surman are out of contract this year. Lallana definitely isn't out of contract, he signed an extension earlier in the season
SNSUN Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 I'd be suprised if Lallana, Surman and McG were here next season (if we actually exist next season!). While this season has been woeful, these are the players other teams will snap up to play in the CCC or even the Premiership as they can cut it at the higher level. Despite this, even if we're in League One I don't think we'll be in too much trouble. Gobern, McKlaggon, Mills and Gillett will be first teamers I reckon.
Saint Klaus I Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 I'm not absolutely sure but neither Lallana or Surman are out of contract this year. just like the bale deal. an agreement has been made for a transfer to go through.
Channon's Sideburns Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 just like the bale deal. an agreement has been made for a transfer to go through. Cheers Klaus - simple....drop him now. We've been carrying him when he's played for weeks.
Hopkins Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 He's not agreed to sign for anyone. He didn't want to leave in January. He wants to play first team football here and not sit on the bench somewhere else. Weve rejected offers for him in january. He's been guff recently. That said its not from a lack of trying. It doesn't help he rarely gets passed the ball, which is when he's at his best but also alot of teams know he can be dangerous given time and have doubled up and man marked him since he started getting all his praise early on in the season.
forever a red and white Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 quite simply he is not match fit and was suited better to JP's system

He had no-one man marking him yesterday, in fact he had acres of space to utilise - how about he actually moved his ar$e and shouted for the ball instead of building crop circles when deciding NOT to put his foot in?????? It's the praise he had earlier in the season which has turned him into the 'guff' player. Perhaps as a professional he should spend less time in pubs and clubs and more time getting match fit on our wonderful training pitches - or is that too much to ask?? There was a 'lack of trying' yesterday - the only effort he made was when he was subbed - McGoldrick put in more effort than him and Skacel combined. At the start of the season the anticipation when he got the ball was like watching MLT - now it's like watching Stuart Ripley, and waiting to see how long he'll have it before he loses it..... My club is dying on its ar$e and I would give blood for this club in that shirt - would he?? Sorry Hopkins, but the wrong fuse was lit with that post then...
VectisSaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 It was the end of the road for Lallana when he was hyped up by Pearce and went with the England U21's. Lallana played for the u21s in November, long after Pearson was replaced by the Dutch amateurs.
SaintRobbie Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 He's lost fitness. But has been injured. I think his mind's on the offers coming in for him since December.
AndyNorthernSaints Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Young talented player in loss of form in first full season, shock!
The Godfather Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Victim recently of our dreadful longball tactics.
St Paul Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 Perhaps he should sign for Leicester. Nigel would have got him fit and not over played him.

sidthesquid Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 He'll be back - all players, especially young ones - go through patches like this. James did & McGoldrick & both came back stronger. Surman has, too, a couple of times, but I don't think he is fully fit at present
Chez Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 (edited) quite simply he is not match fit and was suited better to JP's system Victim recently of our dreadful longball tactics. these two answers combined are the reason for him looking half the player he was before his injury. You could probably add that a lot of young players suffer dips of form at the start of their careers. Why are so many `fans' apparently so keen for him to fail and leave? If nurtured correctly this guy could turn out to be a real star. Edited 5 April, 2009 by Chez

The fact that effort is different than form seems to be lost on some.
teamsaint Posted 5 April, 2009 Posted 5 April, 2009 our better young players, including Surman, have suffered through YEARS of Unpredictable team selection playing in confidence draining poor teams a lack of quality coaching (i suspect) a lack of quality senior pros to learn good habits from (including "lifestyle"). etc etc. Surman and Lallana will go elsewhere, and if properly looked after will make into class players. they have suffered from a failure culture at SFC.

Spot on there. At least they have some talent unlike most of the squad. If they leave and we are left with the likes of Wotton, Pulis and Smith in League 1 i think we will be in league 2 soon after.

You make a fair point however if they were quality players surely they should have performed better and it is therr performances maybe that have contributed to our decline. Footballers with talent should be able surely to win us a few games

Footballers with talent should be able surely to win us a few games They did earlier in the season. Lots of young players suffer a loss of form/confidence. Lots of talented players also seem to play better when playing for different teams with better players and possibly better coaching i.e Dyer. I know that i would rather have a talented player who was temporary out of form than a player who has zero quality like we seem to filled our squad with. We just need the right blend of youth and experience and someone like a Jimmy Case type player to play alongside and protect the youngsters.

West End Saint Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 I hope his form is a blip and he comes back to be the player we know he can be I have been really disapointed with him since the middle of the season he has talent no doubt but I worry he can only play in the hole and unless you are using that system he is not affective he dosent seem to be able to kick very hard or very far which for a professional footballer is a bit of a worry I hope he finds his form next season wouldnt be to sad if we sold him in the summer but he still has a chance to make it as a decent player
Scudamore Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 I'm so desperately unhappy with my lot in life that i feel the need to lash out at 20 year old football players who can't play their best in every single game...
alpine_saint Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 I'm so desperately unhappy with my lot in life that i feel the need to lash out at 20 year old football players who can't play their best in every single game... Oh, humble apologies. Let's tell him how f**king great he's playing then...
scott_saints Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 Oh, humble apologies. Let's tell him how f**king great he's playing then... Agreed.
southamptonfc Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 He does a lot of work off the ball and he's not getting any ball in midfield because we're just hoofing it up the pitch and chopping out the midfield all the time.
Scudamore Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 Oh, humble apologies. Let's tell him how f**king great he's playing then... No. Let's run him out of the club and then complain about the fact that all the players we have left are sh:t.
scott_saints Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 He is not a winger either. He ALWAYS comes too far in field......hence all the crosses from the right hand side are from James from about 50 yards away from the goal, due to Lallana going missing. Bloody good job James has a good cross on him to be fair.
alpine_saint Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 No. Let's run him out of the club and then complain about the fact that all the players we have left are sh:t. The players we have are shiit whether he is here or not.
Greenridge Posted 7 April, 2009 Posted 7 April, 2009 No. Let's run him out of the club and then complain about the fact that all the players we have left are sh:t. I don't think anyone's trying to run him out of the club, the original poster raised a valid question as to why his form has dipped which is patently the case. Just a point for discussion nothing more sinister. He will come good again, he probably has a greater chance than any to make the grade but whether it's confidence, tactics, injuries, socialising, Johnny big time-itis or whatever then at the moment it's not happening for him. A good man-manager should be in a position to spot the cause and help him come out of the other side.
