Minty Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Recently moved to the area, seem to be plenty around, but which are the decent ones?

Minty Posted 1 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Ones nearby include Anchor and Hope, The Freemantle Arms and Duchess of Wellington and Wellington Arms (which is the only one someone has recommended so far).
Hunty Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Duchess is good, Freemantle Hotel is run by a couple of good Saints lads, but walk down to the Park Inn in Park Road, great pub, great ale, full of Saints but no juke box or pool table, a proper pub! Might even buy you a drink Mr Mintrum!
Denzil Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 The Pig and Whistle is a nice quiet pub with a great atmosphere. Really friendly and a great place to take the kids.

hamster Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Do people not like the Brigh****er then? I know that the bar staff have a tendency to look after their regulars but for decent ale *I always head there. *good reason to avoid it Minty

If you want to score drugs then fine, if not stay away, You're probably thinking of the Park Hotel on Shirley Road. The Park Inn is a bit of an oldies real ale pub, not a den of iniquity. South City Si Posted 3 April, 2009 Share Posted 3 April, 2009 Wellington Arms is a cracking pub, probably best one in Freemantle. For a very quiet, but very good pint go to the Waterloo Arms. Freemantle Arms is also a good friendly local tucked away in the back streets. Shirley Park Inn (Shirley Park Road, just off Romsey Road) is my local and another cracking pub, friendly local atmosphere, unlike most of the pubs on the High Street, good beer and friendly staff. The Crown is suprisingly alright as well. Avoid: The Manor, Salisbury Arms, Windsor, Shirley Park Hotel. Good thing about Shirley-Freemantle area is that there are loads of pubs around, many that I haven't ventured into yet.

I ventured into the Windsor once a few years back not knowing any better. Never again. Also been in the Park Hotel in the past (along with other board members like stevegrant and Michelle), but that's best forgotten about too!!! I'll definately try the Wellington then, sounds ideal, and is barely 2 minutes walk from the house too. Bonus.
Andy_Porter Posted 3 April, 2009 Share Posted 3 April, 2009 (edited) The Osborne or Wellington Arms are the only two i'd reccomend. I spent a lot of Sundays in the Osborne when I lived on Shirley road, not so many now though,. Defiantly avoid the Rover and The Park Hotel or whatever it's called. stevegrant Posted 3 April, 2009 Share Posted 3 April, 2009 If you fancy a slightly longer walk/stumble, there's always the Winston on the corner of Hill Lane and Archers Road. And yes, the past in the Park Hotel is best forgotten...

Minty Posted 3 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 3 April, 2009 There's a better way of finding out than asking on here. :drinkers: Yeah, but having gone into the Windsor once before, I now like to make sure I know where to completely avoid before putting myself in a situation where I want to leave within seconds of walking in...!! benjii Posted 5 April, 2009 Share Posted 5 April, 2009 (edited) The Pig and Whistle is a nice quiet pub with a great atmosphere. Really friendly and a great place to take the kids. Seriously though, the Wellington Arms on Park Road is class and the one down by the church near Millbrook Road (I forget its name now for some reason?!) is good too. EDIT: Pretty sure that's the Waterloo - quiet but pleasant. The Osbourne is ok. Most of the ones on Shirley Road are full of dullards. The Wellie is defo the best. hamster Posted 5 April, 2009 Share Posted 5 April, 2009 The Englishman is good if you intend becoming a regular, and the landlord George is a down to earth saints fan too. If you plan on taking a lady with you or meeting a lady whilst out, then walk on by.
