badgerx16 Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Are they the same variety ? Are they self-fertile ? If not, do they flower at the same time ? If all three answers are no, then unless there are others planted nearby, you might not get anything. Also, they can take up to 4 years to start fruiting. The other key thing with plum trees is to regularly prune them, or you will find that the fruit is there, but out of reach.

I got them cheap from a plant auction and the man selling them told me to do this.

badgerx16 Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 What's the best way to keep snails & slugs off grapes, tomatoes, strawberries and other soft fruits  Never suffered from molluscs attacking my grapes or toms, though they do sometimes have a go at the strawbs. My advice is to use sharp sand or straw around the plants, particularly strawbs when the start fruiting, and to encourage as many birds ( feathered ! ) into the garden as possible. You could also try guiness traps, or plant a Hosta - they are slug magnets and will keep them off everything else, little b4stards.
swannymere Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Victoria plums are disease prone, personally i always go for Early Victoria (opal) as they're much more resilient.
Mole Posted 1 April, 2009 Author Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Slug/snail pellets. Yep, i'm not that keen on them as the Thrushes eat snails, but there isn't really another effective choice.
jeff leopard Posted 1 April, 2009 Share Posted 1 April, 2009 Yep, i'm not that keen on them as the Thrushes eat snails, but there isn't really another effective choice. We have real slug/snail problems in our garden as we've got lots of near-by cats and no birds. My girlfriend pours bran around the flower bed, apparently the slugs and snails eat it, then have chronic indigestion, and then explode!

Barfy Posted 2 April, 2009 Share Posted 2 April, 2009 Snails aren't very keen on having salt poured on them. Pouring salt on all of the slugs and snails in my garden may cause some detriment to the quality of fruit and veg. Whilst on here I might as well get my 1st out todays 3 posts money's worth and continue on in Finbar Saunders mode with words like manur, bedding, rooting and fertilising and phrases like planting your seed, well trimmed bushes and meat and 2 veg etc etc F'narrrr Chortle F'naaarrr. Slightly off topic, has anyone seen the advert for some bikini waxing ,er, wax where different women are walking around and in the background there are different shapes popping up that indicate what pubic topiary each one had! I lol'd when I saw it the first and only time. I'm sure I didn't dream it. :smt017

I suppose it would bring a whole new meaning to being the 'apple of your eye' I'm quite partial to a nice pair of firm Melons on a woman Maybe this is where the saying 'losing your cherry' comes from  It could also could explain the origin of the quaint 'just going to squeeze the lemon' for girls going off to have a wee re getting rid of cats we bought a cat scarer which acts a bit like a burglar alarm, sending out infra red (?) beams which detect movement and when activated sends out a very high frequency tone which cats (and presumably other animals as well) dislike intensely. A bit pricey though to be honest but defo worked for us. we found ours on a mail order ad in one of the Sunday newspaper supplements. Another pretty good method is if you have a garden hose give them a blast of cold water each time they get anywhere near your garden. After a while they get the message!!
