miserableoldgit Posted 1 April, 2009 Posted 1 April, 2009 Not sure if this is genuine or not but it is quite funny:- This is hilarious - no wonder some people were offended! This is the message that the Maroochydore High School Queensland staff voted unanimously to record on their school telephone answering machine. This is the actual answering machine message for the school. This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students and parents to be responsible for their children's absences and missing homework. The school and teachers are being sued by parents who want their children's failing grades changed to passing grades - even though those children were absent 15-30 times during the semester and did not complete enough school work to pass their classes. The outgoing message: Hello! You have reached the automated answering service of your school. In order to assist you in connecting to the right staff member, please listen to all the options before making a selection: To lie about why your child is absent - Press 1 To make excuses for why your child did not do his work - Press 2 To complain about what we do - Press 3 To swear at staff members - Press 4 To ask why you didn't get information that was already enclosed in your newsletter and several flyers mailed to you - Press 5 If you want us to raise your child - Press 6 If you want to reach out and touch, slap or hit someone - Press 7 To request another teacher, for the third time this year - Press 8 To complain about bus transportation - Press 9 To complain about school lunches - Press 0 If you realize this is the real world and your child must be Accountable and responsible for his/her own behaviour, class work, homework and that it's not the teachers' fault for your child's lack of effort: Hang up and have a nice day! If you want this in another language, move to a country that speaks it. -------------
sydney_saint Posted 2 April, 2009 Posted 2 April, 2009 Was excellent until that final line which was perhaps a tad harsh.
Saint in Paradise Posted 2 April, 2009 Posted 2 April, 2009 Was excellent until that final line which was perhaps a tad harsh. Harsh but fair ?
sydney_saint Posted 2 April, 2009 Posted 2 April, 2009 Harsh but fair ? No not fair at all, some people genuinely struggle with languages no matter how much effort they put in to learn the language. Think everything else is clever but that is just a cheap shot.

I struggle to speak Chinese - I've only managed to learn one word in 30odd years - which is why I chose not to live there.

I'm sure you couldn't care less where you lived if you are from a war torn country.

bridge too far Posted 3 April, 2009 Posted 3 April, 2009 Pure luck where you're born, If in war torn country, chin up. Doesn't mean you can go to any country you like and set your own rules and expect people to understand you. I mean to say, we don't do that as a nation - do we
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 3 April, 2009 Posted 3 April, 2009 Quilley has an absence line to phone where you leave a recorded message. They will also send an SMS to your mobile if your child is absent. The lady on reception, I call her 'The Deflector' will almost always put you through to a teacher whose answer machine will cut in, almost immediately, so you leave a message and contact details. We have had a poor response on this (understatement). Last week our daughter and complete class went to the V & A museum with the school. By half past 9 many irate parents had been advised, via a SMS, that their child was absent for registration and first period. I wonder if the school were thinking 'where the faark are these 25 kids?'
Wiltshire Saint Posted 4 April, 2009 Posted 4 April, 2009 I have seen this before and the last line was not in the version I saw. Maybe that's been added for special SWF value? It seems to have started yet another debate about immigrants. Shame as it's quite an amusing little piece that has been tainted by someone elses agenda.
