Dog Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Be careful what drugs you take with you. http://www.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/2855621/drugs
swannymere Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Get a letter from your GP explaining what prescription drugs you take, saves loads of grief.
Dog Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 It really does depend on how skint the Thai customs officers are at the time. They get a huge bonus from DEA if they find drugs on someone at the airport, but the Thais never have to hand the drugs over, so it just goes around in circles. I have travelled Thailand may times and the stories and newspaper articles open your eyes. Worse if you are travelling alone, as they can really stitch you up. Don't ever let go of your baggage, Mr Thai might need To buy a new moped.

benjii Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Get a bottle of Sangsom on your way through (assuming Oz will let yo bring it in). TBF - you'll probably get a harder time from Bruce customs plod than Mr Somnorathananapran.

I'm only stopping there for a few hours, I just assumed they would want to check what you are bringing into Thailand, for as someone above mentioned (and has been confirmed by members of my girlfriends family) they do like a good bribe out there. Benjii's spot on in that Thai customs won't give a monkey's as effectively you won't be treading on their soil. If you're really that worried then pack any stuff in your suitcases as I'm assuming your luggage will be checked through to Oz. He's also right about Oz customs and they were all over me like a rash when I went round the world and made me scrub my hiking boots for ages before they let me in!!!!! Rattlehead Posted 26 March, 2009 Share Posted 26 March, 2009 Bangkok Airport is a f*ck sight better than Heathrow, including T5. Why are you worried anyway? Have you ever even been outside the UK before? I've been to the new airport in Bangkok about 5 times and never had a problem, but maybe it depends on what you look like. If you post a pic of yourself I will quite happily tell you if I think you're in trouble.

Anyway was only there for an hour and it wasnt that great. That's the old one which was indeed somewhat ropey before they built the new one. The players used to wait at level crossings to get to the next tee, whilst Jumbo's taxi'd past!!!! The new one is top notch and ****es on Heathrow. dubai_phil Posted 28 March, 2009 Share Posted 28 March, 2009 The new airport as mentioned is massive. But has a sort of greyness about it which some say is soul-less Some airlines won't let you off IF they are behind schedule, depends on who you fly with. Mates went to Sydney from Dubai via BKK simply so they could get a smoke, plane was late they weren't allowed off and were really not happy. Duty Free is about 50 times more expensive than downtown for "Thai souvenirs" but fags and stuff are fine and cheaper than UK or Aus. Not sure if you are allowed now to take anything liquid back onto a plane for Aus, though. If you can then get the local proper Red Bull (medicine bottle with Red Bull logo) fantastic with Vodka and you won't sleep for a week! The Duty Free system is ok think they deliver to the plane for you but cans/bottles no. Unlike UK you do security just before getting on the next plane, not in some big transfer hall. So lots of people leave it too late and miss flights! The place is on 3 levels, the smoking rooms are on the level where you come off the plane, the airline lounges are one floor up and then the main shops etc two up. Nothing much like a Brit bar but some places selling stuff like Pad Thai etc and canned beer. The travelators down the corridors when you get off the plane are massive and have a little Thai accent saying Ting tong the talk as you get to the end. Took me about 4 trips to realise they actually say End of the walk.... We still lol at it now You won't get time to clear immigration though as on a GOOD day it takes about 25 minutes in each direction and you are at least 25 mins each way from anything worth seeing in the city centre Aussie customs will be far harsher than Thailand - sniffer dogs in the baggage halls and every bag x-rayed. Make sure you read the regs it's like 20 years in jail for an apple or dirty trainers or something stupid like that

Course I've been outside the UK before ****wit, I just have to take some much medication to keep myself alive like a normal person that I'm concerned about getting stopped as I know these countries get funny about 'drugs'. I'm taking a prescription form just in case, but from the looks of things I have nothing to worry about. Cheers.

Are BA likely to change where they stop if the situation gets a bit more unstable? Well they sure as hell won't land there if it gets as bad as it did at the end of last year!! Plums Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 I travel to Thailand and Asia all the time and i have never had a serious problem with any of the customs officers, although give an Asian person a official looking uniform and they do seem to get a bit over officious ( i once got hit with a billy club for repeatedly standing over the white line at a sky train syation) Always smile and be friendly, learn how to say hello and thank you in Thai and that always shows you are at least making a bit if an effort. Saying that i once got into quite a serious situation when i over stayed a visa in Thailand, but i'm sure that wont apply to you. The first time i went to Oz i had some funny ***** customs guy who was originaly from Soton, thought it would be funny to give me a bit of a grilling. Another time i made a bit of a joke with one of the customs guy, he didn't find it funny and spent the next 45 minutes pulling my backpack apart. I worked in airport security at LHR, and can confirm that there are some seriously flawed characters working in that field. Although courtesy can help any situation, the arseholes are arseholes and there ain't nothing much one can do about it that doesn't make the situation worse for yourself. Strange as it may seem, the worst (most damaged) tended to be ex army or police.

My only mistake is when he asked the Question "any fruit or vegeatbles?" i replied with saying a pound of apples and a punnet of strawberries please, i thought it was funny, he didn't and that was that.
