alpine_saint Posted 25 March, 2009 Author Posted 25 March, 2009 Erm, I played at the Dell in 1997. And are you going to tell me, being the Saints fan that you are, that it means f**k-all to you ?? If any Tom, D.ick or Harry (or any other Skate for that matter) can do it, does that not devalue the experience ??
INFLUENCED.COM Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 does that not devalue the experience ?? The monetary value is 4k, lets wait till next year to see if it is cheaper then we will all know. Get your arse over here and get involved with us....you never know you just might enjoy it, last I read Manager was still up for grabs !!!
Arizona Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 And are you going to tell me, being the Saints fan that you are, that it means f**k-all to you ?? If any Tom, D.ick or Harry (or any other Skate for that matter) can do it, does that not devalue the experience ?? If a group of Skates is willing to pay £4,000 to play at SMS that's fine by me. Infact I'll be the first to register on POL and laugh my ass off.
Scudamore Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 How is that accusation any different than always assuming the worst in what I post, like you have ? It shatters the mystique that playing at the home of SFC engenders to Saints fans It will bring in f**k-all money, and certainly wont turn around our fortunes. Accept the fact I dont agree with you and move on.. I certainly go to St Mary's for the mystique... It's like a David Copperfield show... Where did that white elephant come from? How does McGoldrick seemingly fly about the pitch? It's a mystery...but to have it shattered...well it would practically break me...
Griffo Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 I don't care if you feel it shouldn't be done. I see it as "hallowed turf" in the same way you do, and I am basically spunking myself at the thought of me stepping out onto the pitch on the 7th May. I can't ****ing wait.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 One of the main problems with the stadium is that it only generally generates income from matchdays 30 days a year max. The odd pop concert helps but for the rest of the year it's basically a white elephant but one whose pitch has to be tended and stands have to cleaned etc. etc. etc. all costing money. Anything to generate extra revenue outside of this period, should be applauded IMO. The pitch hiring is a good idea but I think that the club should make more of the much lauded catering/hospitality and open one of the suites as Southampton's Top Restaurant venue, open every evening apart from match nights. The Dell bar should also be used more, open most evenings and weekend lunchtimes and should, outside of matchday, be open to all Saints fans and not just members. I thought this as well? A top notch restaurant - With the celeb chefs coming and doing a residence, James martin, Marco, jamie- or what about Kuti's St marys? The blue jays stadium in toronto has a planet hollywood housed in it -part of the ground could be turned into that? A pub in the dell bar/ cafe. Pool table/snooker tables. A bowling alley - there are so many things that could be done. But whether they look into it or not we may or may not know.
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 Grass grows by the inch...and it dies by the foot... Or some such like... I couldn't give a rat's arse though if me playing there takes away some of the magic for you though Alpine...as it will make the pitch even more special for this "bugger" as in years to come i will point to the pitch and say "i've played on that"...no bother that the opposition were a little out of shape...as i can glaze over the details... Am I not on your team then!
Johnny Shearer Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 Now if it was the dell..... Did anyone purchase any turf from there - I think everything else was up for grabs Pah! I was there for the Brighton game and managed to get a chair and a chunk of prime turf which I proudly carried home and planted in my garden. Its still there. Yours for the princely sum of £400 ono! :smt083
saintwarwick Posted 25 March, 2009 Posted 25 March, 2009 Why the aggression about this ? why must everybody agree with it ? Btw, the amount of money it will bring is MINIMAL. Every little helps.
Saint Bones Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 Pah! I was there for the Brighton game and managed to get a chair and a chunk of prime turf which I proudly carried home and planted in my garden. Its still there. Yours for the princely sum of £400 ono! :smt083 Ha Ha - All I have is an airial picture of the dell. Never got over to see it which was a shame. I'll swap you some good ol Aussie red dust if your keen
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 Ha Ha - All I have is an airial picture of the dell. Never got over to see it which was a shame. I'll swap you some good ol Aussie red dust if your keen I've got a spare seat from the Dell - could cost you a big box of Cherry Ripes - also you would have to have a masters iced coffee for me! .... now why did I go and write that won't be able to concentrate all day!

Accept the fact I dont agree with you and move on.. because you are wrong, and as normal, just want something to moan about. why does it "shatter the mystique"? Its something i have dreamed about since i was a lad, both at the dell and sms, and im sure i am not alone here. So yes i can move on that you are not happy whereas you clearly cant...ever
bolo Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 If it wasn't for the fact that i would be 6000+ miles away on that day then i would be there tackling Mike! ANyway its a good use of the stadium which is only ever used for 10% of the year max!. By the way, i think some skates have already played there! ;-)

I have tried several times to explain my position, and you just sneer at it. Reflects worse on you than me, to be honest...
Lowestoft-Saint Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 There is feck all hallowed about the turf at St Mary or any other football ground.... Its grass ffs..... we let the ****e from down the road play there when we have a game against them..... So if Sfc can make money from ordinary people in this way, and these people are willing to cough up the fee then I dont see a problem with it.... Have you never been on the Pitch of at any ground ? Last game of the season and all that....
Saint Bones Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 I've got a spare seat from the Dell - could cost you a big box of Cherry Ripes - also you would have to have a masters iced coffee for me! .... now why did I go and write that won't be able to concentrate all day! Just had to have a chat with my Preston mate - I take it you dont get either in the UK ? Can do - think the iced coffe may be a little bit warm though You've been to WA then ?
Saint Bones Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 Oh- side note... anyone who happens to make the pitch - can you dig up that supposed scum shirt from down the road
Deppo Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 And are you going to tell me, being the Saints fan that you are, that it means f**k-all to you ?? If any Tom, D.ick or Harry (or any other Skate for that matter) can do it, does that not devalue the experience ?? Why would it devalue the experience? You can only get the experience by means like this, unless suddenly you become good enough to turn pro...
SaintRobbie Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 Would it cost £4000 if you wanted to hire it out for a local band gig as well?
ooohTerryHurlock Posted 26 March, 2009 Posted 26 March, 2009 Just had to have a chat with my Preston mate - I take it you dont get either in the UK ? Can do - think the iced coffe may be a little bit warm though You've been to WA then ? Love WA you lucky bugger! Thought about Ice coffe - I could send you over a mask of my face - yu can then drink the iced coffee and film it and put it on you tub e and I can watch it !!!! ..... seriously if you are a big saints fan I can let you have a chair - I've got a few... We were very well orgainsed - we had a socket set so got the frame work!!!!
Toadhall Saint Posted 28 March, 2009 Posted 28 March, 2009 Totally understand your sentiment Alps but....... no room for sentiment when we're skint. On the other hand if someone from that lot down the road wanted to pay up the price would go up to more than their club debt!
CB Fry Posted 28 March, 2009 Posted 28 March, 2009 Just to confim everyone, according to Alpine: SMS is the mecca of football. £4,000 is a minimal amount. Just remember those two facts when in the next few days he starts whinging about the stadium debt (surely money no object for the mecca of football??) or our indentikit stadium blah blah or getting all unbelievably shirty about Lowe spending money, (say, less than £4k) on some corporate marketing or catering or some other triviality. Trust me, it'll come, and the tune will change.....
suewhistle Posted 28 March, 2009 Posted 28 March, 2009 Does the your attitude on this apply to golfers playing around on a championship golf course? or maybe even driving a lap round a motor racing circuit? Why should n't we fulfil our ambitions in life? or should we all sit in dark rooms writing narky little threads on internet message boards - get out and smell the air Alpine - and for christ sake try smiling at the world - you never know it might just smile back! I've skied on the Hannenkahm at Kitzbuhel immediately after a World Cup race, and even with newly edged skies and turning as much as possible I was still ****ting myself, but great to say you've done it. As for going on the pitch, ahem... "You'll never stop the East Stand, You'll never..."

dubai_phil Posted 29 March, 2009 Posted 29 March, 2009 You sort of have a point Alps and I can agree in some ways. But equally, one thing that I have found really important in my life since I came here is a "fear" of those horrible words - IF ONLY. Going through life with a dream or ambition that could never be fulfilled is as daft as going through life without any dream or ambition. When the chance comes up, to play on that Championship Course, to meet that celeb, to be involved in a match on our "field of dreams", is it better to say YES I'll go for it or is it better to find the excuse not to do it? When you hit my age you suddenly realise all those Saturday afternoons you couldn't be bothered to play footie and now it's too late, that darned If Only starts to eat away at you. So now we have the crux. We get the chance to experience a once in a lifetime moment, those of us daft or lucky enough to be able to afford it will be there and it will be special. But, of course, this is only happening because... If ONLY the "leadership" of this club hadn't kept making WRONG decisions one after the other for the past 5 years. So we could sit and say If Only for the rest of our days or we do a bit to help the club by stumping up some cash and saying "I did that" and HOPE that our measly 4 grand keeps the club afloat for another few hours, because who knows, next year we may not have hallowed turf to get the chance to play on.... A wise mate once had a sign on his bar here - he who dies with the most stories wins. (Oh and BTW surely having fans playing on the pitch is better than Sammy Saint et al flopping about on it on match days)

sadoldgit Posted 29 March, 2009 Posted 29 March, 2009 Oh dear, old Victor Meldrew is at it again. Moan moan moan. It is not as if we don't need the cash is it? And tell me Alpine, what do you have against Chavs? Is it okay if well healed people do it or are you just a snob? I have known kids play on the pitches of the teams they support and that feeling and experience has never left them. There is no such thing as "hollowed turf". If stadiums can be used to bring in cash from other sources why is that a problem? I saw many a concert at the old Wembley stadium - didn't detract from the Cup Final one bit. You are really scrapping the bottom of the barrell now Alps. You really do strike me as someone who sits in a darkened room desparately trying to find another reason to slag the club off. You really are a most miserable individual Alpine.

Window Cleaner Posted 29 March, 2009 Posted 29 March, 2009 What's all this about hallowed turf anyway. Will it not be resurfaced in the summer ready for next season. Might as well get a few quid out of a few people before you rip it up anyway. Most years the Hampshire Senior Cup final was played at the Dell, the reserves played there, Southampton Boys played there,I played there even.Only since we've had Staplewood has all that stopped. The turf certainly isn't "hallowed", might be just as well if the players actually trained on the pitch at St Mary's ,perhaps they'd get a better feeling for home games.
Northant Saint Posted 29 March, 2009 Posted 29 March, 2009 Not sure what the problem is. Making money to help the club survive, at the same time, making dreams come true? Hey man give the guy a break. Its international weekend and everything at the club is pretty quiet. Alps has to redouble his efforts to find something negative.
