St Landrew Posted 18 March, 2009 Share Posted 18 March, 2009 Just in case people don't know it yet, but Street View is available for Southampton now. I'm just exploring it at the moment. Don't quite know how far it extends yet, but it's the usual fun.

Johnny Shearer Posted 19 March, 2009 Share Posted 19 March, 2009 Whilst it is a good thing to have a look at it does feel like another step towards 1984 for me. Did have everyone at the office having a play with it today though.
hamster Posted 19 March, 2009 Share Posted 19 March, 2009 Whilst it is a good thing to have a look at it does feel like another step towards 1984 for me. Did have everyone at the office having a play with it today though. Told some colleagues about it and they were shocked that it was so detailed. Offered to show them on the computers and they pooed themselves saying that we'd all got an e-mail WARNING of excessive personal use of works computers, ala facebook vierwing and the like. 1984! They'll be tagging us next.
St Landrew Posted 19 March, 2009 Author Share Posted 19 March, 2009 I notice that the face and vehicle registration number blurring, is extremely flawed. One end of a car's number plate maybe blurred, but you go past the car and look back, and the number is completely visible and recognisible once you zoom in. Not that I would worry, in any case, but some people would find it a problem. Some people would find anything a problem.

Further to p my last post, I did find a way around it and I too noticed the number plates. Person I was showing raised their eyebrows at it, but I pointed out that it is actually possible in real life to walk past someones car and read their number plate qute legally. It is quite harmless imho and extremely impressive. Ponty metioned Stoneham Lane. Go to Stoneham Close, facing Stoneham lane. Look left towards the bus stop and zoom in, you will clearly see a St Georges nipper waving frantically at the camera. He is probably now a legend in the palyground. I wish i'd seen it going around and made myself immortal too.
exit2 Posted 19 March, 2009 Share Posted 19 March, 2009 have to say Im very impressed. So she is chuffed now

stevegrant Posted 20 March, 2009 Share Posted 20 March, 2009 There are some absolutely hilarious images. Various ones of people p!ssing in the street, one with someone throwing up, people going in and out of sex shops, etc. Sadly, Google appear to be removing a lot of them
Rory Posted 20 March, 2009 Share Posted 20 March, 2009 I love it. Not being in Soton, I am getting all nostalgic travelling around the place. Nice to see the Google car stuck in the always horrendous traffic queue on Howard Road

All the trees are still in leaf, petrol is 1.09 a litre at Tescos and a couple of building developments in our road are at about the right stage. jawillwill Posted 3 April, 2009 Share Posted 3 April, 2009 I see the people of Milton Keynes have decided to protost against the google car for invasion of privacy. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7981677.stm ...a protest which only ended up giving their houses nationwide coverage on the BBC news. Also like the way in that piece it shows the images taken down such as the man going into a sex shop. Surely it defeats the point of taking them down? :smt017
