Just watched this having Sky plussed it on Thursday, What a match, the look on Gennoe's face when they scored their second said it all, face like a smacked @rse springs to mind. Old big ead was typically arrogant in the post match interview. This was real football at its best. Love the way the ball sticks in the mud when played along the ground, and our Peachy and Holmes goals were by far the best.

Another 'would never get away with it today' moment was midway through the 1st half. The ball went out for a throw on the nearside of the pitch and Bally definitely threw a punch at Martin O'Neill. These days O'Neill would have gone down like he'd been shot, the crowd would have rared up, the commentator would have got exited and said 'you just can't raise your hands' and Bally would have been off. Back in '79 it just passed off without comment and the players just got on with it!

I can't believe I was telling a Firest mate at work on Thursday about itv4 showing the big match from 30 years ago over a cuppa at lunch and all the time two foot away both our teams were on the box. That was a devastating day, 30 yrs ago I mean, hearing I've missed it again today is very pleasant as well

Just got round to watching it this morning, what a great game, and what a crap pitch!

I had forgotten how good both our goals were, and that run where Curran looked like the fastest man on earth...

They should bring the seating policy back so Benitez and Ferguson have to sit next to each other on a bench!!

And is there anyone else out there who has a silk scarf in the loft that reads 'Southampton - league cup WINNERS 1979'?

Just worked out that it is 12 years since we played a League cup ame after New Year! We aren't very good in it nowadays are we.

The Leagiue Cup still holds all of it's romance for me

Remember that game very well ,really thought that we were going to win that at half time, then Genoe and Birtles did their stuff. As for the 4-1 home win over Forest,me and a group of mates ( we were kids at the time ) thought it would be good to sing a dirty little ditty to Kenny Burns as he inspected the pitch prior to kick off.The look of rage on the face of the hard man as he picked out our little group on the near empty Milton terrace is still etched in my mind. The panic we felt soon turned to relief as he then just blew us a kiss and carried on.Football has really gone backwards since those days.

I recall the 4-1 win, hardman Burns was left in a tangled heap in the build up to one of the goals, most amusing, we just hassled them off the ball.

It was nice to see the champions of Europe frightened of coming to the Dell, and when we could beat Liverpool and Man Utd over the next couple of decades it was a test for visiting teams, and here we are now, praying for a solitary goal to see off the whipping boys of the second tier.

I guess the golden era is officially closed for refurbishment.

And the only two surviving players from the cup final of 76.
