In Lallana's defence he is much more suited to a central role. He was at his best when played in middle - from there he could get on the ball and dictate the game. Out wide he lacks the pace and fitness to get up and down all day long. Right midfield continues to be a problem position and now with a right back out for two games that whole side is going to look weak whoever starts.

What amazes me is how we have done so well when effectively only having Gillett in the middle. McGoldrick hardly ever gets goal side and he doesn't exactly stretch teams when going forward.

The theory goes that if you've got a non-combattant but gifted attacking midfielder (like Lennon or Walcott) you stick in an extra defensive midfielder

to do his share of the tracking back and ball recovery and just let the said midfielder get on with the sharp end.If said midfielder isn't making it happen up at the front then he's not up to the job and you replace him with 2 less gifted but more aggressive attacking midfielders and drop off one of the defensive midfielder. We really need to get away with this idea of RM CM and LM, midfielders come in 2 types, defensive and attacking, other than that they should be here, there and every f*ckingwhere.

Yes and a few people around me at Saturday's game were commenting on this as well. I'd drop him which is a shame given his natural ability but we can't play teams with passengers in our league position and that goes for McG as well. Paterson is very raw but at least he looks vaguely like an athlete and will work hard and make the opposition uncomfortable which is where Euell has helped us since coming back in the side.

Agreed for now, I think it is all getting to be just too much for him this season. But overall I still see Lallana as a great prospect.

He reminds me so much of Channon in his early days - who I remember taking loads of flak because he was weak, kept falling over, and couldn't shoot.

I just wish we'd got that £5 million that someone was supposed to be paying us for him. With 5 million swans we could get a whole team of Lallanas and still have enough left over to pay off half of our overdraft.

The fact that we didn't take tends to indicate that it was an urban myth.

Just back to N Ireland after a few days in Southampton when I managed to get to the QPR game. Only the second time I have been to SMS this season (the first was Coventry 1-1), and it was the worst game I have seen for a very long time.

The intricate slow build up passing game of JP has clearly gone and has been replaced by 'kick it high and long at every opportunity'. The two CBs for QPR coped well with every high and long ball yet the Saints persisted. (A tip to MW - don't keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome.)

And if Lallana, Surman and McGoldrick are the latest bright talents from our academy, then the club really is in dire straits. They were all poor but Surman in particular was truly awful - he missed some good chances and when opposition players went past him he merely trotted after them!

Gillett tried hard but in the late stages of the game when Saints desperately needed a goal for 3 points, he wandered slowly over to take corner kicks and took even more time placing the ball - like we were a goal up and playing for time!

The only bright note, Kelvin did not have much to do but kept us in it with some good saves late on, and Perry and JPS were an excellent centre back pairing. It was great to see Saius attacking the ball, getting tackles in, putting it in row Z when there was danger, and getting back on his feet after taking a clattering. He looks like a proper CB and he was my MOM.

MW? Should have made changes earlier and taken off Lallana & Surman and got BWP on much sooner - he made a difference.

Survival? Not if they play like this in the remaining games.
