The Run In: All the Games - All the Teams...

Well...

If Blackpool, Derby or Watford do get sucked back into the relegation mire - it will take me two minutes to update the table.

As it stands though; I can't see any of the 3 relegation places going to anyone except those teams that are shown in the table above.

To our advantage (hopefully) our players will be properly phsyched up for the run in. This break is perfect for us, fans and players alike, it's time to muster the troops and dig in. A win for us AND Forest next week should drag at least one other team into it, that team's fans and players will be ****ting themselves and we will have the advantage of already being in the correct mindset.

I can hope, cant I?

Also, if we get the points against Charlton, we go to Watford with the sole purpose of dragging them into it again. They will be after a point imo and that is when you want to play teams at this stage as it really is **** or bust time.#

Still hoping here.

Also, if we thump (or merely beat) Charlton we could go to Watford having moved out of the bottom 3 for the first time in yonks, that would be a big mental boost.

If, which in this context is the biggest word in the world, IF we can pull out the results, then looking at the fixture list I think Barnsley (despite games in hand) and Norwich could go down.

In my mind we're down with Charlton, and viewing the season as a whole, we possibly deserve to be. Then it's one of four. I still think Blackpool could be in the mix come the end of the season, but ultimately Barnsley have the toughest run in, and they could also come down.

Still, while there's hope, there's a whole ton of praying to be done. Thinking we'll beat Charlton next week would be foolhardy - they'll be just as up for it as us. A win would certainly give us a pleasant boost though.

Can't decide best result for us from Notts Forest's next game, Barnsley

Draw 1-1 or so,keeps them both in the scrap. The more there are the better chance we have of staying up.I think Forest will get a severe tonking though,Davies has gone mad on the loans front, signing more loan players than he can field and destabilising the team when it doesn't need to be .

0-0 better as goals scored counts I think, all being equal on goal difference?

  • 2 weeks later...

My problem with yesterday is that it looks as though Plymouth are now out of it.

I know there are still six games left, but they are 6 points ahead of us, so even if they only win 1 of their last 5 games we would have to win three of ours just to pull level.

I think it's now 2 teams out 3 (Us, Norwich & Forest) and I don't like those odds!!!!!! Maybe Barnsley can be pulled back into it, but they have 5 points and a game in hand on us.

I've gone from being somewhat optimistic to rather pessimistic after yesterday.

Agreed. I've gone from 'running out of games' to 'run out of games'. i'm still clinging to the hope that is Tuesday night. Until Wednesday, that is.

Incredibly 'strange' that all those bottom 6 clubs play each other on the final day of the season:

Plymouth v Barnsley

Charlton v Norwich

N Forest v Saints

Weird. You couldn't make it up!

I still reckon that it could come down to having to win away at forest to stay up. And no doubt a 95th minute goal for either team will do it.

I agree - Being optimistic I can see Norwich picking up 6 points from their last 5 games (lose to swansea, Ipswich and Reading) whilst beating Watford and Charlton. Forest picking up 9 points (beating bristol city, Coventry and Blackpool - losing to Sheff Utd) and then facing us

By my maths that means we need 4 wins and we could overhaul them both - would have to target the palace, burnley, sheff wed games for these 9 points. Then winner takes all against Forest.

Of course this conveniently ignores the fact that we don't look like we could beat an egg at the moment or that the FL could make it all irrelevant anyway!

With most teams having either 5 or 6 games left to play, it is more than likely that, due to the fact that Saints are still in the mix, that things can still all change, one big result can be massive for any one team. The last day couldn't have been predicted with the bottom six all playing each other.

But FWIW to those who like predictions, Here's mine

Personally though, I'm not seeing the point in classing Charlton's, however, I believe that they'll beat Norwich on the last day, because i reckon Norwich will crumble like they did on the last day of the Premiership season where we were both relegated.

PLYMOUTH: Coventry (H) W; Birmingham (A) L; Doncaster (H) D; QPR (A) L; BARNSLEY(H). D - Points gained 5 - Overall Tally - 51

NORWICH: Swansea (A) D; Watford (H) D; Ipswich (A) L; Reading (H) L; CHARLTON(A). L - Points gained - 2 - Overall Tally - 45

NOTT'M FOREST: Bristol City (H) L; Sheff United (A) L; Coventry (H) W; Blackpool (A) D; SAINTS (H). D - Points gained 5 - Overall Tally - 47

BARNSLEY: Watford (A) D; Swansea (H) D; Reading (A) L; Coventry (A) L; Wolves (H) L; PLYMOUTH (A). D - Points gained 3 - Overall tally - 48

SAINTS: Wolves (A) L; Crystal Palace (H) W; Sheff Wed (A) D; Burnley (H) D; FOREST (A). D - Points gained - 6 - Overall Tally - 47

CHARLTON: Birmingham (H) L; Coventry (A) D; Blackpool (H) L; Cardiff (H) L; Derby (A) D; NORWICH (H). W - Points gained - 5 - Overall Tally - 37

Which now leaves the final table, with my reckoning being..

Plymouth 51

Barnsley 48

Saints 47 - Slightly better goal difference, barring an absolute hammering

Forest 47

Norwich 45

Charlton 37

Okay obsessing about this as I wind down before the long weekend I thought I'd see what would happen based purely on the form tables. Looking at the home and way sides form over the last 5 games. If one side is more than 2 places in the table above the other then they win, within 2 places a draw. E.g. Plymouth lose at home to Coventry because Plymouth are 20th in the home form table and Coventry are 15th in the away form table.

PLYMOUTH: Coventry (H) Lose; Birmingham (A) Lose; Doncaster (H) Lose; QPR (A) Draw; BARNSLEY(H) Draw.

2 points

BARNSLEY: Watford (A) Lose; Swansea (H) Win; Reading (A) Win; Coventry (A) Lose; Wolves (H) Lose; PLYMOUTH (A) Draw.

7 points

NORWICH: Swansea (A) L ; Watford (H) L; Ipswich (A) L; Reading (H) L; CHARLTON(A) D.

1 point

NOTT'M FOREST: Bristol City (H) D; Sheff United (A) L; Coventry (H) L; Blackpool (A) D; SAINTS (H) L.

2 points

SAINTS: Wolves (A) Lose; Crystal Palace (H) Win; Sheff Wed (A) Win; Burnley (H) Lose; FOREST (A) Win.

9 points

CHARLTON: Birmingham (H) Draw; Coventry (A) Draw; Blackpool (H) Lose; Cardiff (H) Draw; Derby (A) Draw; NORWICH (H) Draw.

5 points

So the final table would be:

20 Barnsley 52

23 Southampton 50

19 Plymouth 48

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

21 Norwich 44

22 Nottm Forest 44

24 Charlton 37

So taking a totally dispassionate measurement Saints survive! Honestly when I started this exercise I had no idea how it would turn out (in fact in my head I had Saints and Barnsley joining Charlton in League 1).

Obviously this would make the last game of the season very interesting since Forest would need to beat Southampton to end up with the same number of points - and how much they beat us by would determine who went down.

I know it's all meaningless but it's cheered me up a bit!

This really would be a miracle great escape with Barnsley and Norwich having such a favourable last game of the season. The Palace game will have to be a win for Saints if both these teams win today. If Barnsley have a forward who can kick the ball intentionally then they should win 3-0 easy.

Palace - picked up form of late.

Wednesday - Good win against Norwich

Burnley - more resiliant this season

Forest - desperate to stay in the league.

Can't even see where the next point is coming from, let alone the next win.

Keeping the faith, albeit that it's a tiny, minute, minescule, scrap of faith. (But am mentaly prepared for League One also.

Palace mid table - gone on their holidays

Wed - mid table - gone on their holidays

Burnley - almost certain of a play off place now, so start to rest key players for play offs by the time we play them

Palace will not lie down....Warnock is manager and will not allow it

Wed..??? our best chance of any points

Burnley far far better than us and bang on form

Forest...too much "never say die attitude" for us to handle, unlike our lot

Palace, last time when we played them two of our goals conceded are individual stupid mistakes. James will never make the same mistake again. Size is not Alex Pearce. Even if Size played the same standard against Wolves, he will be able to give Kuqi a tough afternoon. If Kuqi is not better than Harewood then we should be fine.

Wed, last time we played them, they were the poorest to come down to SMS this season. With a goalscorer in our team, we should win this game.

Burnley, given that they rest their key players. If we can't beat a Burnley reserve team at home, our players won't deserve to be anyone.

Forest, I am not afraid of playing their team. Just seen the goals this morning, two of them were down to very poor defending of Bristol City. Size, Perry, Skacel, James won't make those kinds of mistakes. When I am worry about is the "Sky effect", everytime we played away on Sky this season, we will definitely lose by 3 goals difference. I really hope any of our players can break this rule, just like breaking our must lose record against Watford.

It is ****ing tight now!!!! Blackpool and Plymouth are not safe yet at this moment. Also Coventry and Reading have a big say about which two teams relagated with Charlton. Even Coventry can be relagated if they undergo four successive heavy defeats. Not until the final whistle on the survival Sunday, the result for this massive relagation battle will not be easily decided!!!!!!

Reading's form - or lack of it - is looking critical to our run in. If they beat Barnsley and Derby they'll be secure in the play offs by the time they face Norwich. So ideally we need them to beat Barnsley, but then screw up against Derby so they need a win against Norwich.

On the other hand we'd like Burnley to be safe in a play off place by the time we play the, but that only happens if they beat Sheffield United and Swansea and Preston both lose. However that would mean that Reading wouldn't need a win again Norwich.

So to get to a laboured point. Which is prefereable - a motivated Reading side needing a win against Norwich? Or a demotivated Burnley coasting against us?

I'd probably go for a demotivated Burnley myself - safe in a play off position - since Reading are looking so hopeless at the minute I reckon Norwich will beat then at Carrow Road whatever.
